The three most useful seating arrangements to understand are theatre for watching, classroom for writing and working, and banquet for dining and table conversation. They are a practical way to organize common layouts—not a universal or exhaustive classification. The best choice depends on what attendees will do, how the room is built, and whether everyone needs a clear view of a presenter.
What are the three types of seating arrangements?
Event-planning guides describe more than three layouts, including boardroom, U-shape, circle, hollow square, chevron, and cabaret or crescent. Grouping the options into theatre, classroom, and banquet is a useful starting point: it distinguishes a shared forward-facing audience, a room with work surfaces, and table-centered dining or conversation.
These categories describe the arrangement of furniture, not the event itself. A meeting, lecture, or celebration could use different layouts depending on whether its main activity is listening, working, or socializing.
How do the three arrangements compare?
| Arrangement | Best suited to | Workspace | Interaction | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Theatre | Keynotes, lectures, ceremonies, and performances | Little or none at each seat | Mostly shared attention toward the front | Limited writing space and attendee-to-attendee interaction |
| Classroom | Training, workshops, and sessions involving notes or devices | Tables provide a surface for materials and laptops | Still primarily oriented toward the front | Tables take more space and furniture than chair-only rows |
| Banquet | Meals and social events | Tables support dining and materials | Conversation is easy within each table group | Some seats may face away from the presenter; interaction across tables may be limited |
There is no broadly applicable capacity figure that compares these arrangements. Actual capacity depends on the room and its specific setup.

Theatre seating: focus the room on the presentation
Theatre seating places chairs in rows facing a speaker, stage, or screen. It works when most attendees are expected to watch and listen rather than write extensively or collaborate in groups. With no tables to arrange, it can fit more people into a given room than a table-based layout, though the precise capacity is venue-specific.
- Choose it for: a keynote, lecture, performance, or ceremony where a shared view matters.
- Expect: limited writing space and less opportunity for informal interaction between attendees.
Classroom seating: give attendees a work surface
Classroom seating arranges tables in rows facing the front, with attendees seated at them. The tables make it easier to take notes, use a laptop, or work with training materials. They can also accommodate snacks or meals during a longer session.

Banquet seating: make meals and table conversation central
Banquet seating places chairs around tables, commonly round ones. It suits meals and social events because people can eat and talk with others at their table. It is less ideal when every attendee needs an unobstructed view of a presenter: people on the far side of a table may face away, and conversation between separate tables may be limited.
Meeting Professionals International’s 2017 Practical Meeting Planning Guide describes standard banquet tables as 60 or 72 inches in diameter, seating eight or 12 people. Those are figures from that guide, not a universal rule for every venue or current event setup.

When a cabaret or crescent layout is a better fit
If guests need both a table and a view of a presentation, consider cabaret or crescent seating. The presenter-facing half of each table is left unoccupied so seated guests can face forward while keeping access to a table. The trade-off is lower seating capacity than filling every side of the tables. It is one of several related layouts rather than a fourth member of the practical three-category framework.

How to choose the right layout for your event
- Start with the main activity. Choose theatre when attendees will mostly watch and listen; classroom when they need to write or use devices; banquet when eating and table conversation are central. Consider cabaret or crescent if they need tables and a presenter view.
- Check the room itself. Confirm its dimensions, fixed features, furniture availability, and the routes people will use to enter and leave.
- Check sightlines. Consider whether seats can see the stage or screen, particularly from tables or the back of the room.
- Confirm capacity for the exact setup. Ask the venue rather than applying another room’s numbers. The London Canal Museum notes that its layout diagrams are illustrative and that its capacities apply to its own venue.
- Account for food and service. Make sure the arrangement supports the planned meal or refreshments without undermining the event’s main activity.
