Spoilers for Season 2, especially Episodes 47–48. The finale closes the immediate Shi clan conflict, but not every thread: the ending recap reports that Loulan survived her apparent death and became Tamamo, while Maomao and Jinshi grow closer without resolving their relationship. Maomao returns to apothecary work in the pleasure district, and the official anime portal has confirmed that a sequel is in production.
What happens in The Apothecary Diaries Season 2 finale?
Season 2 ends with Episode 48, titled 「はじまり」, commonly rendered as “Beginning.” The official anime portal says the episode aired on July 4, 2025, and brought the season to a close. The finale follows the aftermath of the fighting against the Shi clan, then shifts attention to the lives Maomao and Jinshi will lead after the conflict.

The plot details below follow Nelly Osco’s spoiler-marked El Comercio / MAG recap, published July 4 and updated July 5, 2025. That recap reports the following resolution:
- Loulan confronts Jinshi and Shenmei after the fighting. Shenmei rejects her account and attempts to kill her, then dies.
- Loulan dances on a balcony as soldiers fire at her, and she falls. A later reveal says she survived as Shisui and took the name Tamamo; Maomao’s hairpin helped her escape.
- The children who survived the poison are placed in new care arrangements. Kyou, left partially paralyzed, goes with Maomao’s adoptive family in the pleasure district, while the other children go with Ah-Duo.
- Gyokuyou becomes empress after giving birth to a son, marking a change in the imperial household.
Is Loulan dead at the end of Season 2?
Her fall from the balcony is staged as an apparent death: soldiers fire, and she drops from view. But that is not the last word on her fate. The finale recap reports a closing reveal that Loulan survived as Shisui and adopted the name Tamamo. The hairpin Maomao gave her plays a part in her escape.
#1 Best Overall
That reveal turns what first looks like a tragic ending into a possible future story thread. It establishes her survival in the finale’s reported events; it does not, by itself, confirm what she will do next.
Do Maomao and Jinshi kiss?
No completed kiss is reported in the finale recap. After the conflict, Jinshi finds Maomao among the Shi children. They share an emotional reunion and nearly kiss, but the children interrupt them. Later, Jinshi visits Maomao while she is working as an apothecary in the pleasure district and bites her neck; another interruption follows.
The scenes make their growing intimacy unmistakable, but they stop short of a spoken confession, a completed kiss, or an explicit relationship resolution. The romance ends the season in a more charged place, not a settled one.
Why does Maomao return to the pleasure district?
The observed outcome is that Maomao leaves palace work and resumes her apothecary activity in the pleasure district. The recap does not establish one exclusive motive for that choice, so it is better not to reduce her return to a single explanation.
Rank #3
Her change of setting does not mean she has stopped engaging with court affairs: the recap says she continues solving court mysteries from a distance. Jinshi’s visit shows that their connection continues even though their day-to-day worlds have shifted.
What does the ending mean?
The finale places political consequences beside personal possibility. The Shi clan conflict has an immediate resolution, but its aftermath changes the children’s lives and the imperial household. Loulan’s apparent death gives way to a survival reveal, leaving a thread that may continue beyond the season.
Rank #4
“Beginning” also fits the leads’ changed circumstances. Maomao is back outside palace service, with court mysteries at a distance; Jinshi visits her in that new routine. Their interrupted encounters preserve romantic tension rather than provide a final answer. This is an interpretation of the sequence, not a confirmed statement of authorial intent.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Season 2 the end of the anime?
No. The official anime portal announced sequel production on July 4, 2025, the day Episode 48 aired. Its teaser points toward a new land and mentions Jinshi receiving paper from Loulan in the fortress. The announcement confirms that the story is set to continue, but it gives no release date or detailed sequel plot.

Where can you continue the story?
The anime is based on Japanese light novels written by Natsu Hyūga and illustrated by Touko Shino. The sources available here do not establish the precise novel volume or chapter corresponding to Episode 48, so a specific starting point cannot be recommended reliably. Readers choosing between anime and novels should also decide how far beyond the anime’s events they want spoilers to go.
