The casting creates an immediate hook, but it does not, by itself, make their conflict feel newly revealing. The dual performance has moments of wry appeal; the larger film is more often held back by familiar gangster-movie conventions than lifted by its central conceit.
Does Robert De Niro’s dual role work?
De Niro plays Costello and Genovese, former friends whose jealousies and betrayals drive them toward a bitter rivalry. The contrast between the two men gives the film a built-in dramatic question: can one actor make their conflict feel like a clash of distinct people, rather than a showcase for a star playing against himself?
There is entertainment in watching De Niro shift between the roles, and the premise lends some scenes an intentionally heightened quality. But the doubling can also feel like a casting gimmick. The Associated Press found it less weighty than the subject warrants, and that is the central limitation: the novelty of seeing De Niro opposite De Niro does not consistently deepen the story’s portrait of either man.
What is the film about, and who made it?
Directed by Barry Levinson and written by Nicholas Pileggi, The Alto Knights dramatizes the rivalry between Costello and Genovese, two real crime figures. The film is based on real events, but it is a dramatic feature, not a documentary account. Its premise centers on the men’s personal and criminal relationship, rather than on De Niro’s doubling as a historical fact.

Warner Bros. released the film in US theaters nationwide on March 21, 2025, after an international rollout that began March 19. Rotten Tomatoes lists the runtime as 2 hours 3 minutes. For the UK home-entertainment version, the BBFC gives a more precise runtime of 122 minutes 46 seconds.
Does it offer a fresh take on the gangster film?
The film’s most persistent problem is not that it resembles earlier mob dramas; it is that the resemblance does not lead to much fresh commentary. The Associated Press says it reaches for the magic of Goodfellas without finding it, despite Pileggi’s connection to that film as screenwriter. Screen Daily’s review likewise says The Alto Knights recalls earlier gangster-film highlights without interrogating the genre’s familiar tropes.

Those comparisons are about storytelling and perspective, not a claim that the films share a plot or are interchangeable. In The Alto Knights, the historical rivalry offers material for a tense character drama, while the familiar genre machinery often keeps the story at a distance. The result can feel like a return to well-worn mob-movie rhythms rather than a reason to revisit them.
What did critics make of it?
The response is mixed-to-negative, not unanimous. Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus calls the film “A competent but tired retread of mob movie tropes,” adding that De Niro versus De Niro yields “no real victor.” That is an aggregator’s summary of critics’ reactions, not a quotation from one reviewer.

Individual responses leave room for viewers who enjoy the performances, the wry humor, or gangster-film pastiche. But the recurring reservation is that the execution does not make the familiar material feel sufficiently new. If the dual role is your main reason to watch, it supplies a curious premise; it is a less dependable reason to expect a substantial new mob drama.
Is The Alto Knights worth watching?
It is best suited to viewers who want to see De Niro tackle two sharply opposed roles and are comfortable with a crime drama that leans on established genre conventions. The casting is the film’s most distinctive feature, but it does not fully answer the question at its center: whether the two performances can generate a rivalry more compelling than the novelty of their setup.

Viewers looking for a fresh, incisive addition to the gangster-film canon may find the film less satisfying. Those interested in its real-life subjects, Levinson’s direction, or the unusual screen pairing may still find enough to hold their attention, particularly if they approach it as a dramatization rather than a definitive history.

Home viewing: Blu-ray and 4K UHD
Warner Bros. Home Entertainment announced a Blu-ray release for May 27, 2025. A Screen-Connections review published August 28, 2025, reports that the 4K UHD edition presents the film in 2160p with Dolby Vision and HDR-10, and includes Dolby Atmos audio compatible with Dolby TrueHD 7.1. The review describes the video upgrade as the main difference from the earlier Blu-ray and reports no bonus content on the 4K edition. These are details of the reviewed release, not a claim about every regional disc or current stock.
For viewers choosing between those formats, the reported distinction is chiefly the 4K edition’s higher-resolution presentation and HDR options; the review does not identify added extras as a reason to upgrade. Streaming availability and current disc listings can change, so check the relevant service or retailer for the edition and region you need.
