Yes—if you’re watching for Ben Affleck and Jon Bernthal together. Their contrast gives The Accountant 2 its liveliest moments, but a slow, disordered crime plot and tonal shifts keep the sequel from being as satisfying as its central partnership. It works best as a brother-focused action adventure, not as a tightly plotted thriller.
What is The Accountant 2 about?
When an old acquaintance is murdered after leaving the message “find the accountant,” Christian Wolff (Ben Affleck) takes on the case. He brings in his estranged brother Braxton (Jon Bernthal), and the two work with Treasury Deputy Director Marybeth Medina (Cynthia Addai-Robinson) to uncover a conspiracy. The 2025 sequel reunites the central cast and creative team from the first film: Gavin O’Connor directs and Bill Dubuque wrote the screenplay. Warner Bros.’ official trailer and Artists Equity’s film page list the credits and cast.
Are Affleck and Bernthal good together?
They are the sequel’s main reason to watch. Christian is restrained and methodical; Braxton is more outgoing and impulsive. That difference gives their scenes friction, banter and a sibling dynamic that feels more engaging than the investigation surrounding them. Associated Press critic Jake Coyle calls them “a fine action duo of opposites,” while TIME’s Stephanie Zacharek says the actors are “unsurprisingly wonderful together.”
The film takes its time getting them on screen together. Coyle faults the “unhurried and disordered script” for delaying the pairing, a pacing problem that matters because their chemistry is the movie’s clearest strength. Once the brothers do share scenes, the adventure has a stronger pulse.

Does the crime story hold together?
Not as consistently as the leads do. The murder, investigation and conspiracy provide a framework for the action, but the screenplay’s disorder can make the case feel harder to follow than it needs to be. The story also moves between action-comedy banter and serious material involving human trafficking and the mistreatment of migrants and children. TIME notes that this darker subject matter can pull the film’s tone out of balance.
That contrast is a real trade-off rather than a reason to dismiss the whole movie: viewers drawn by the brothers’ sparring may enjoy the shifts, while those expecting a focused procedural or a consistently light action comedy may find the film uneven. Its entertainment comes more reliably from the partnership than from the mechanics of the plot.

Do you need to watch the first film?
The sequel keeps Christian Wolff and the world of the 2016 film, while giving Braxton a larger role. Familiarity with the original can provide useful context for Christian’s character and the brothers’ estrangement, but the new case is set in motion by its own murder clue. The available reviews describe the sequel as continuing the earlier story; they do not establish that a first-film refresher is essential to follow this investigation.
How long is it, and what should viewers know before watching?
Published runtimes differ by source and market. The Associated Press review lists the U.S. film at 125 minutes. The BBFC lists the UK cinema and home-entertainment versions at approximately 132 minutes, and Apple TV’s U.S. catalog lists 2 hours 12 minutes. These listings should be treated as source-specific figures, not silently reconciled into a single runtime.

For content guidance, the BBFC’s UK classification cites strong violence, bloody images and language. Its description includes sustained shootouts, assassinations, stabbings, hand-to-hand violence, bloodshed and crime-scene injury detail. TIME also flags the trafficking storyline and the mistreatment of child migrants. These are UK classification details, not a substitute for the U.S. rating: the Associated Press lists the U.S. rating as R for strong violence and language throughout.
Is The Accountant 2 worth watching?
If the appeal is seeing Affleck and Bernthal play off one another in an action film, yes. Their opposing personalities and brotherly friction make the sequel lively when its plot is not. If a clear, brisk conspiracy story or an even tone is the priority, expect more frustration. The balance of the cited reviews supports a qualified verdict: an entertaining adventure built around two leads who work better together than the script’s pieces do.
