At the 2023 Oscars, “90s supermodel nails” meant a restrained manicure: short-to-medium nails, a neat shape and understated nude or pink polish. The List identified Kate Hudson, Mindy Kaling, Ana de Armas and Florence Pugh as red-carpet examples. That is editorial trend reporting, not an official record of every attendee’s manicure.
What are “90s supermodel nails”?
The look draws on a 1990s fashion reference and a less-is-more approach to nails. Its recurring features are a clean, short-to-medium shape and soft neutral color—usually nude or pink—with a simple finish. The label describes a style, not one exact nail length, shape or polish.
The List’s March 21, 2023 report connected the look to the Oscars red carpet and named Kate Hudson, Mindy Kaling, Ana de Armas and Florence Pugh. It did not establish how many attendees wore it, and the examples should not be read as identical manicures. The List’s Oscars trend report
How to recreate the understated look
- Choose a tidy length and shape. Keep nails short to medium and file them into a neat shape that suits your preference. The reporting does not prescribe one shape.
- Pick a soft neutral. A sheer nude or pink gives the manicure its understated quality. You can choose a more opaque neutral if you prefer greater coverage.
- Decide whether to keep it plain. A simple finish is closest to the minimalist description, but small details can still fit the broader label.
The List reported a TikTok creator’s suggested combination of OPI Baby, Take a Vow and OPI Bare My Soul; PS UK separately suggested Essie Skinny Dip. PS UK described Halle Berry’s translucent square manicure with colorful star decals as a fun spin on the trend. HOLA! described Jennifer Lopez’s beige manicure as part of the same 1990s-inspired style. How the Oscars look relates to other 1990s-inspired manicures
Not every manicure described as 1990s-inspired is an Oscars example or a “supermodel nails” look.
