“That Was Never an Option”: Why the Blue Bloods Finale Didn’t Set Up a Spinoff

Kevin Wade said the Blue Bloods finale was not built to launch a spinoff because the show’s appeal centered on its ensemble. Boston Blue later continued Danny Reagan’s story.

Blue Bloods executive producer Kevin Wade said a spinoff was not part of the series finale’s plan because the show’s identity rested on the Reagan family ensemble, not on one lead who could be moved to another city. His comment described the finale’s development—not a permanent ban on future expansions. CBS later launched Boston Blue, continuing Danny Reagan’s story.

Why the finale didn’t set up a spinoff

In remarks reproduced by ScreenRant, Wade rejected the idea of taking one character and relocating them to launch a new version of the show: “You couldn’t just take one of them, place them in New Orleans and say, [that’s] Blue Bloods: New Orleans. So that was never an option.” The reporting identifies Wade as an executive producer of Blue Bloods. TVSeriesFinale also reproduced a version of his explanation.

His reasoning was rooted in the show’s ensemble format. Blue Bloods was built around the Reagan family and its supporting cast, rather than a single central character whose story could be lifted out and made to carry a separate series. In that context, the finale was not designed as a backdoor pilot for a New Orleans-set spinoff.

What “never an option” meant

Wade was explaining what the team did not plan while making the finale. The remark was not a declaration that the franchise could never continue in another form. Those are different questions: whether the finale would launch a spinoff, and whether the network might later develop an expansion.

Blue Bloods ended after 14 seasons, with its finale airing December 13, 2024, according to ScreenRant. That ending closed the original series without using its final episode to introduce a spinoff premise.

How Boston Blue continued the franchise

CBS now describes Boston Blue as an expansion of the Blue Bloods universe. Donnie Wahlberg returns as Danny Reagan, who joins the Boston Police Department. Paramount Press Express describes the series as a multi-generational family drama, placing Danny in a new city and a different family-and-police setting.

How the two decisions fit together

The finale-era decision and the later Boston Blue expansion are compatible. Wade’s comment concerned a specific creative choice: the finale would not transplant a character to New Orleans to launch a new show. CBS’s later expansion gave Danny Reagan a continuation in Boston, developed after the original series had concluded.
