The Wiz (1978)
Sidney Lumet’s The Wiz is not a replica of the 1939 movie: it adapts the stage musical as a distinct, all-Black retelling featuring Diana Ross, Nipsey Russell, Richard Pryor, Lena Horne, and Michael Jackson. Its strongest claim to this ranking is that it makes its own musical and cultural interpretation of Oz rather than simply borrowing the earlier film’s identity. The Academy’s history of Oz on film identifies Oz the Great and Powerful among later works inspired by the Oz tradition. It earns a place for extending that screen tradition with a different focus from Dorothy’s familiar journey.
