As of October 8, 2026, IMDb’s Top 250 Movies chart ranked these five films highest among its eligible titles: The Shawshank Redemption, The Godfather, The Dark Knight, The Godfather Part II, and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. That makes them IMDb’s current top five by its user-rating method—not an objective or universal verdict on the greatest films ever made.

How IMDb calculates its Top 250 rankings
IMDb says the chart uses a Bayesian weighted rating, rather than simply sorting films by their unadjusted average score. Its formula is WR = (v ÷ (v + m)) × R + (m ÷ (v + m)) × C, where R is a title’s mean rating, v is its number of ratings, m is the minimum number of ratings for chart eligibility, and C is the mean rating across the report. In effect, the calculation accounts for both a film’s average score and how many ratings it has.

IMDb’s Help page currently sets the minimum at 25,000 ratings for inclusion in the Top 250. The chart covers feature films and excludes shorts, TV movies, miniseries, and documentaries. These are IMDb’s stated rules; the resulting order reflects the platform’s eligible titles and regular voters, not a universal definition of greatness.

The top five offer a useful answer if you want to know which eligible films currently lead IMDb’s user-rated chart. They do not establish that every viewer, critic, or film tradition would rank these titles in the same order. A high position is evidence of a strong standing under IMDb’s method, not proof that one film is objectively better than another.
