Grammy red-carpet fashion has made room for personal statements as readily as formal dress. This selection highlights memorable looks for their originality, silhouette, color, spectacle, or connection to an artist’s public image—not as an official ranking. The examples span 1974 to 2019 and show how very different approaches, from sculptural couture to a lavender suit, can leave a mark.
Memorable Grammy looks across the decades
There is no definitive measure of the “best” Grammy outfit. These selections are editorial: the emphasis is on looks that stand out in fashion retrospectives and illustrate the ceremony’s appetite for experimentation. Designer details are included where the cited accounts identify them.
1. Cher, 1974
Cher wore a white halterneck bikini top detailed with sequin butterflies. Its revealing silhouette and decorative motif made it a recurring reference in Grammy fashion retrospectives.
2. Dolly Parton, 1977
Parton leaned into an unmistakable, head-to-toe pink look, finished with voluminous hair. The effect was cohesive and larger than life rather than understated.

3. Grace Jones, 1983
Jones wore a sculptural leather dress and matching headpiece by Issey Miyake. The structured shape and sweeping headwear made the outfit feel closer to wearable sculpture than conventional eveningwear.
4. Michael Jackson, 1984
Jackson’s military-inspired jacket featured embellishment and epaulets, paired with a sash, aviator sunglasses, and a jeweled glove. The combination turned familiar stage-image elements into a formal red-carpet statement.
5. Cyndi Lauper, 1984
Lauper brought her eccentric style to the carpet, coordinating her fashion statement with eye makeup. The look’s impact came from the whole expressive presentation, not from conventional polish.

6. Selena, 1994
Selena wore a white dress by Lillie Rubin. Its clean, light-colored look offers a more restrained counterpoint to the theatrical outfits elsewhere in this selection.

Lopez’s deep-plunge green Versace dress became one of the most repeatedly cited Grammy fashion moments. Its saturated color and daring neckline made the silhouette instantly recognizable.
8. Kanye West, 2006
West wore a lavender three-piece suit with wide peaked lapels and a plunging shirt. The Recording Academy retrospective notes that he stood out in a year when many celebrities dressed more casually—a reminder that a memorable look can be defined by tailoring as much as spectacle.
Rank #3
9. M.I.A., 2009
M.I.A. paired a voluminous, multilayered Manish Arora dress with matching blue high-top sneakers. The contrast between the elaborate dress and sporty footwear gave the outfit its own rhythm.
10. Lady Gaga, 2010
Gaga wore a corseted, galactic lavender gown by Armani Privé, one of three custom looks she wore that evening. A Philip Treacy headpiece added to the futuristic effect.

11. Katy Perry, 2011
Perry’s custom Giorgio Armani gown combined an iridescent finish, an asymmetrical train, and a crystal-encrusted bustier. Feathered wings made the look overtly theatrical.

12. Pharrell Williams, 2014
Williams paired his outfit with an oversized vintage Mountie hat by Vivienne Westwood. The hat became the defining visual element; TIME later reported that it sold for more than $40,000 to benefit his nonprofit.
13. Rihanna, 2015
Rihanna wore a frothy pink Giambattista Valli couture gown with Chopard jewels. Its generous volume and soft color created an unusually romantic, high-impact silhouette.
14. Cardi B, 2019
Cardi B wore a vintage Thierry Mugler look. The archival garment brought fashion history directly onto the carpet, distinguishing it from a newly made red-carpet design.

15. Dolly Parton, 1977: a note on interpretation
Parton’s all-pink styling is included above as one complete look; its memorable quality comes from the coordinated color and hair, rather than a documented designer attribution. It is not a separate outfit from the same year.

These examples point to several distinct routes to lasting recognition. Jones and Gaga used sculptural, futuristic construction; Lopez and Cher made the silhouette central; West relied on assertive tailoring; and M.I.A. set formal volume against sneakers. Pharrell’s vintage hat and Cardi B’s archival Mugler show another route: a garment can resonate because of its provenance as well as how it looks.
The GRAMMY Museum treats red-carpet fashion as part of the ceremony’s historical record, alongside photographs by official Grammy photographer Ron Galella and selected outfits. That archival perspective helps explain why a look can matter beyond the night it was worn: it becomes a visual record of an artist, an era, and an approach to performance.
