Pluto TV was the better choice for live channels and scheduled movies, Amazon Freevee stood out for higher-profile licensed programming and originals, Plex offered the best media-hub features, and Vudu had a strong selection of recognizable films in its free-with-ads section.
This is a 2022 U.S. snapshot, not a claim that every service still exists in the same form. Freevee was folded into Prime Video in 2025, and Vudu became Fandango at Home in 2024. The ranking below preserves what each service offered viewers in 2022, while identifying those later changes.
The five best free movie apps of 2022
| Rank | App in 2022 | Best for | Account and ads | Main catch | Later status |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Tubi | Best overall | No subscription or credit card; account useful but not the point of the service; ads required | Large headline catalog includes TV as well as movies, and titles rotate | Still active as Tubi |
| 2 | Pluto TV | Live channels plus on-demand movies | Viewing possible without registration; optional account; ads | Live movies follow a schedule, so they may not be immediately available on demand | Still active |
| 3 | Amazon Freevee | Higher-profile licensed content and originals | Ad-supported Amazon service; Amazon-platform integration could be confusing | Free titles appeared beside Prime, rental, and purchase content | Brand and standalone app retired; free content moved into Prime Video |
| 4 | Plex | Free streaming and personal-media features together | Free account helpful; Plex Pass is not required; ads remain on free content | More complicated than a dedicated movie app, and catalogs vary by location | Still active |
| 5 | Vudu | Recognizable movies in a free catalog | Account required to watch in 2022; ads on free titles | Paid rentals and purchases are mixed with free titles | Now branded Fandango at Home |
What free means here
For this list, free means no recurring subscription is required to watch the free catalog. It does not mean that the app costs nothing to download and then requires a subscription, nor does it mean that every title inside the app is free.
- Ads pay for the service. Tubi, Pluto TV, Freevee, Plex, and Vudu use advertising to support licensed programming. Free viewing therefore normally includes commercial interruptions.
- Some services still require an account. Registration may be needed for playback, watchlists, cross-device syncing, or resume-watching, even when no payment is required.
- New theatrical releases are not included by default. Legal free services generally rely on older catalog films, licensed windows, rotating selections, originals, documentaries, and other programming.
- Free to install is not free to watch. Netflix, Disney+, and similar apps can be downloaded without charge but do not provide their full catalogs without a paid plan.
- Availability is territorial. A title or even an entire service may be available in the United States but absent in Canada, the United Kingdom, or another market.
Tubi describes its service as legal and ad-supported, while Plex explains that advertising supports its free movies and shows. That is the model behind the five main recommendations.
How the ranking was decided
The ranking is an editorial comparison of the services as U.S. viewers could use them in 2022. It prioritizes movie usefulness rather than raw marketing numbers. The criteria are:
| Criterion | Weight | What it measures |
|---|---|---|
| Legal, licensed access | 25% | Whether the service operates through official apps or websites and does not require piracy, torrenting, or sideloading |
| Movie selection | 25% | Genre breadth, recognizable films, quality, and actual movie depth rather than total TV inventory |
| Access and device support | 20% | Mobile, browser, smart-TV, streaming-player, casting, and console availability |
| Ease of finding something | 15% | Search, categories, watchlists, continue-watching tools, and live guides |
| Friction and advertising | 10% | Account requirements, payment confusion, commercial interruptions, and the clarity of free labels |
| Special value | 5% | Originals, live programming, documentaries, personal-media tools, library access, or downloads |
Catalog counts are not directly comparable. A company may count movies, television episodes, live channels, documentaries, and short-form programs together. For example, Tubi’s 2022 figure covered more than 40,000 movies and TV shows; it was not a count of 40,000 movies.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →1. Tubi: best overall
Tubi was the safest recommendation for most people who simply wanted a large, legal, free catalog. It combined a broad selection with wide device support, straightforward free viewing, and no need for a monthly subscription or credit card.
In a May 2022 corporate announcement, Tubi reported more than 40,000 movies and TV shows, more than 100 local and live news and sports channels, and more than 400 entertainment partners. A June announcement raised the reported channel figure to more than 125. These were company-reported figures, and the total included television as well as film, but they still showed why Tubi ranked first for breadth.
Why Tubi won
- It was free to watch without a recurring subscription.
- Its movie categories and search tools made it easier to browse than a live-only service.
- In 2022, Tubi supported Android and iOS, web viewing, Roku, Apple TV, Fire TV, Chromecast, game consoles, and many smart-TV platforms.
- An account could add watchlists, synchronization, and resume-watching without turning the service into a paid subscription.
- It was positioned as a legal alternative to unauthorized streaming sites. Tubi says its catalog is licensed and that viewers do not need a VPN or suspicious pop-ups to use it.
The catch
Tubi is ad-supported, and its own guidance says it does not offer an ad-free option. Tubi says its commercial load is lighter than traditional broadcast or cable television, but that is a company claim rather than an independent measurement. Viewers should still expect interruptions.
The large catalog number can also create unrealistic expectations. It includes television, and licensing means a film can disappear or be available in one territory but not another. Tubi is the best general starting point, not a guarantee that it has a particular new release.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteBest for: Viewers who want the broadest general-purpose free catalog and are comfortable with ads.
Sign-up friction: No subscription or credit card is needed. An account is useful for personalization and watching across devices.
Current status: Tubi remains active, although its present catalog and device list should be checked in the reader’s territory at Tubi’s official site.
2. Pluto TV: best for live channels plus on-demand movies
Pluto TV was the best choice for viewers who wanted the feel of cable without paying for cable. It combined a conventional channel guide with an on-demand library, so users could either browse scheduled programming or select an available movie.
Rank #2
- Ultra-speedy streaming: Roku Ultra is 30% faster than any other Roku player, delivering a lightning-fast interface and apps that launch in a snap.
- Cinematic streaming: This TV streaming device brings the movie theater to your living room with spectacular 4K, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision picture alongside immersive Dolby Atmos audio.
- The ultimate Roku remote: The rechargeable Roku Voice Remote Pro offers backlit buttons, hands-free voice controls, and a lost remote finder.
- No more fumbling in the dark: See what you’re pressing with backlit buttons.
- Say goodbye to batteries: Keep your remote powered for months on a single charge.
Pluto’s service description supported the central proposition: hundreds of free live channels and thousands of on-demand movies and television shows. It was available through mobile apps, browsers, smart TVs, streaming devices, and consoles. Paramount reported 78.5 million global monthly active users in December 2022, up from 64.4 million a year earlier; that figure describes audience scale, not the size or quality of Pluto’s U.S. movie catalog.
Why Pluto made the list
- The live-channel interface was useful for viewers who preferred to lean back and browse rather than make a decision from a Netflix-style grid.
- It offered thousands of on-demand movies in addition to scheduled channels.
- Registration was not required for basic viewing; an account added personalization and other conveniences.
- It worked across the major mobile, browser, smart-TV, streaming-device, and console ecosystems.
The catch
Pluto’s live and on-demand sections are not interchangeable. If a movie is playing on a live channel, a viewer may have to wait for the scheduled showing instead of starting it immediately. On-demand availability is therefore more important than the total channel count when the goal is a specific film.
Advertising is part of the experience, and both the ad load and catalog can change. Pluto’s strength is breadth and a cable-like interface, not necessarily the deepest or most carefully curated on-demand movie selection.
Best for: Viewers who want live news, sports, themed channels, and scheduled movies alongside on-demand viewing.
Sign-up friction: Basic watching was possible without registration; an account was optional for personalization.
Current status: Pluto TV remains active. Use its official on-demand page to check what is currently available.
3. Amazon Freevee: best for premium licensed content in the 2022 snapshot
Amazon Freevee was the strongest 2022 choice for viewers who cared more about recognizable licensed programming and originals than sheer catalog breadth. It had previously been known as IMDb TV; Amazon announced that the name would change to Freevee beginning April 27, 2022.
Amazon’s April 2022 announcement described Freevee as an ad-supported video-on-demand service with more than 60 FAST channels, licensed movies and series, mobile and living-room distribution, and a growing originals slate. Amazon also said it planned a 70% increase in original programming during 2022. Those details explain the service’s higher-profile positioning at the time, although they should not be interpreted as an independent ranking of content quality.
Recommended Free Tools
Why Freevee stood out in 2022
- It offered a mix of licensed movies, series, FAST channels, and original programming without requiring a Prime subscription for the free tier.
- It benefited from Amazon’s distribution across mobile devices and living-room platforms.
- Its originals and better-known licensed programs gave it a more curated, premium-feeling identity than some large free catalogs.
- It was a legitimate, ad-supported service rather than a source of unauthorized new releases.
The catch
Amazon’s ecosystem could make the word free confusing. Freevee titles appeared alongside Prime subscription content, rentals, purchases, and other paid options. Viewers needed to check the label on each title instead of assuming that everything surfaced in Prime Video was included at no charge. Amazon also claimed that Freevee was designed with half the commercial load of traditional television; that was marketing language, not an independently measured comparison.
Best for: Viewers who wanted recognizable licensed films, series, and originals in a free service and were already comfortable using Amazon’s platforms.
Sign-up friction: Expect Amazon-platform integration and an account login, even though a Prime subscription was not the definition of the free tier.
Current status: Freevee should be treated as a historical 2022 name. Amazon phased out the standalone Freevee app and branding in 2025, moving its free, ad-supported content into Prime Video. The standalone app was reported to remain accessible only until August 2025; readers should now look in Prime Video for clearly marked free-with-ads programming rather than search for a current Freevee app. See TechCrunch’s report on the phase-out.

4. Plex: best for a free streaming service that is also a media hub
Plex was the best fit for people who wanted free, ad-supported streaming in the same ecosystem as their own media collection. It offered free movies, television shows, and live TV while also serving users who maintained a personal media server.
Plex’s April 18, 2022 support documentation confirmed that the free catalog was separate from Plex Pass and supported by advertising. Plex’s current free-streaming page continues to describe free movies, shows, and live channels without a payment or subscription.
Why Plex made the list
- It combined free licensed movies and shows with live television.
- It worked on phones, tablets, browsers, smart TVs, streaming players, and consoles. The 2022 support material listed Android, iOS, Roku, Apple TV, Chromecast, Fire TV, Xbox, PlayStation, and other platforms.
- A free Plex account improved watchlists and cross-device continuity.
- Users who already had a Plex personal-media setup could keep their own library and Plex’s free streaming catalog in one application.
The catch
Plex can be unnecessarily complicated if someone only wants to press play on a free movie. The free catalog is not the same thing as the user’s own media library, and Plex Pass is a separate paid product rather than a requirement for the free catalog. Buying Plex Pass does not remove the advertisements from free ad-supported programming.
Plex’s catalog varies by location. Plex’s 2020 launch announcement mentioned more than 14,000 free movies, documentaries, and TV shows at that time, but that dated figure should not be carried forward as a verified 2022 count. Catalog totals and licensing arrangements change.
Best for: Existing Plex users, home-media enthusiasts, and viewers who want free streaming plus personal-media organization.
Sign-up friction: A free account is useful for continuity and watchlists; Plex Pass is optional and does not make free programming ad-free.
Current status: Plex remains active. Its current free-streaming page is the appropriate place to verify titles and supported devices.
5. Vudu: best for recognizable movies, with an important free-versus-paid warning
Vudu was a good choice for viewers who wanted familiar movie titles and were willing to look carefully for the free section. Unlike Tubi and Pluto TV, Vudu was fundamentally a movie rental and purchase marketplace that also offered a substantial ad-supported catalog.

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Contemporary 2022 coverage described more than 10,000 titles in Vudu’s free selection, but that was editorial reporting from the period rather than a permanent catalog guarantee. The service required an account to watch, even though browsing was possible without one.
Why Vudu made the top five
- The service had a large, recognizable movie catalog, including a free-with-ads section.
- Its marketplace model made it easy to discover films that could be rented, purchased, or watched free when an ad-supported license was available.
- It was useful for viewers who valued particular known titles more than a simple, dedicated free-only interface.
- The current service continues to advertise thousands of free movies and television shows with limited commercials and no subscription requirement.
The catch
Vudu’s free catalog was easy to confuse with its paid marketplace. A search result could lead to a rental or purchase page, and a movie that was free in one period might later become paid or disappear. Look specifically for the free label or use the service’s free-title listing.
Vudu’s download feature also needs careful qualification. Eligible purchased content could be downloaded on supported iOS devices, but that does not establish that free ad-supported movies could be downloaded for offline viewing. Do not choose Vudu expecting every free film to work offline.
Best for: Viewers who want recognizable films and do not mind navigating a free section inside a rental-and-purchase marketplace.

- Compact without compromises: Our sleek design won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, and it even powers from your TV alone, plugging into the back and staying out of sight. No wall outlet, no extra cords, no clutter.

- Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
Sign-up friction: An account was required for playback in 2022.
Current status: Vudu was renamed Fandango at Home in 2024. Fandango said user libraries and service access would remain unchanged. The old Vudu name may still appear in some app listings or URLs, but current readers should look for Fandango at Home and verify the free label.
Best alternatives to the five main apps
Kanopy: best ad-free option if a library or university provides access
Kanopy is the most important exception to the ad-supported rule. It offers curated films, documentaries, educational programming, and cinema-focused content without commercials for users whose public library or university participates.
It is not universally free for everyone: access requires a participating library card or university login. Libraries set the available catalog, ticket allowances, and other limits, so two users can have different experiences. Check Kanopy’s eligibility page and your library before relying on it. For documentary viewers, Kanopy can be a better fit than a larger general-purpose catalog when the goal is quality nonfiction or curated cinema rather than unlimited browsing.

Hoopla: best library option for borrowing and offline viewing
Hoopla works more like a digital library than an unlimited streaming service. A participating library card can unlock movies, television, ebooks, audiobooks, comics, and music. Most movie titles can be downloaded for offline viewing in the mobile app, subject to the title’s rules.
Hoopla supports devices including Roku, Apple TV, Fire TV, Samsung TV, and Chromecast, but monthly borrowing limits and eligibility depend on the library. It is therefore an excellent option for a commuter, traveler, or viewer who needs downloads, but it is not an unlimited replacement for Tubi. See Hoopla’s movie page and registration requirements.
The Roku Channel: useful for Roku-oriented viewers
The Roku Channel was a credible 2022 alternative with free movies, television, and live channels. Contemporary coverage noted that a Roku device was not required and that registration was not necessary for basic use. It is less essential to this top five because its value is spread across platform discovery, live channels, and general entertainment rather than a uniquely deep movie catalog.
Crunchyroll: a specialist option for anime
Crunchyroll’s free tier can make sense for anime viewers, but it is not a general free movie app. Its inclusion depends on whether the reader wants anime rather than a broad film catalog.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Crackle: a historical 2022 honorable mention, not a dependable current recommendation
Crackle was a legitimate free, ad-supported service with movies, television, and originals in 2022. It should not, however, be presented as a reliable current recommendation without checking its official app and catalog first. Its parent company, Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment, entered bankruptcy proceedings in 2024, and the case involved Crackle Plus services. The company’s financial problems make older lists that casually recommend Crackle potentially misleading. CBS News reported on the bankruptcy and streaming services.
Which app should you choose?
| If you want… | Start with… | Why |
|---|---|---|
| The strongest general catalog | Tubi | Broad movie and television selection, extensive device support, and low payment friction |
| A cable-like experience | Pluto TV | Live channels, a guide, and on-demand movies in one service |
| Higher-profile free programming in 2022 | Freevee | Licensed films, originals, and FAST channels; now found through Prime Video rather than a standalone Freevee app |
| Streaming plus a personal media collection | Plex | Free ad-supported programming and personal-media-server features in one ecosystem |
| A familiar movie marketplace with free titles | Vudu/Fandango at Home | Recognizable films, provided the viewer checks whether each title is free, rentable, or for purchase |
| Ad-free cinema and documentaries | Kanopy | No commercials for eligible library and university users, with access limits set by the institution |
| Offline borrowing | Hoopla | Most borrowed movie titles can be downloaded, subject to library participation and lending limits |
Devices, accounts, ads, and downloads
Device support
The five services were not limited to phones. Tubi’s 2022 corporate material listed Android and iOS, Roku, Apple TV, Fire TV, Chromecast, game consoles, smart TVs, and web access. Pluto TV supported mobile, browser, smart-TV, streaming-device, and console ecosystems. Plex listed Android, iOS, Roku, Apple TV, Chromecast, Fire TV, Xbox, PlayStation, and other platforms.
Freevee was distributed to mobile and living-room devices in 2022. Fandango at Home continues to offer free movies and television alongside rentals and purchases, and its current iOS app description identifies free programming with limited commercials. Exact support can differ by country, operating-system version, TV manufacturer, and whether the viewer uses a mobile app, browser, or connected-TV app. Check the official store listing for the device in question.
Account requirements
- Tubi: No subscription or credit card is required. An account adds watchlists, synchronization, and resume-watching.
- Pluto TV: Basic viewing is possible without registration; an account adds personalization.
- Freevee: Amazon integration can require or encourage an Amazon login, but the free ad-supported catalog should not be confused with the paid Prime catalog.
- Plex: A free account is useful across devices. Plex Pass is separate and is not required for free movies or live TV.
- Vudu: 2022 coverage stated that an account was required to watch, not merely browse.
- Kanopy and Hoopla: Both require access through a participating library or university; a normal streaming-service signup alone is not enough.
Advertising
There is no reliable universal ranking of ad load without controlled measurements, and the number of commercials can change. Tubi says it uses fewer ad minutes per hour than traditional broadcast or cable but does not offer an ad-free option. Amazon said in 2022 that Freevee was designed with half the commercial load of traditional TV. Plex confirms that its free catalog is ad-supported and that Plex Pass does not remove those ads. Pluto and Vudu also use advertising for their free programming.

If advertisements are unacceptable, check Kanopy first if you have a participating library or university login. Otherwise, the trade-off for these services is usually simple: no monthly streaming bill in exchange for commercial interruptions.
Offline viewing
Do not assume that a free streaming app allows downloads. The top five were primarily designed for connected streaming. Fandango at Home can download eligible purchased content on supported iOS devices, but that is not proof that its free ad-supported titles are downloadable. Hoopla is the clearest exception: it promotes offline downloads for most borrowed movie titles, subject to library rules. Kanopy is primarily streaming-oriented, so verify current title and institution rules before promising downloads.
How to install and use a free movie app safely
- Use the official Apple App Store, Google Play Store, Roku Channel Store, Fire TV app store, or the service’s official website.
- Check the publisher name and branding before installing. An app promising every new movie for free is a warning sign.
- Do not install an APK from a search result that claims to unlock all current releases.
- Open the official app and look for labels such as Free, Watch Free, Free Movies, On Demand, or Live TV.
- Inspect the title card before pressing play. Confirm that it is free rather than rental-only, purchase-only, or available through a paid add-on.
- Create an account only when it is needed for playback, watchlists, cross-device syncing, or library authentication.
- Check the title in the reader’s country. Licensing is territorial, and a U.S. result does not guarantee availability elsewhere.
- If playback fails, update the official app, try the browser version, check the network, and disable conflicting VPN or proxy settings. Then try another legal service.
Common problems and what to do
I installed the app, but the movie is not free
The title may have left the catalog, be licensed only in another country, be available only as a rental or purchase, or appear in search despite not being playable on the current device or location. Use the service’s free-title filter, inspect the title card for a free or ad-supported label, and search another legal service if necessary.
The app advertises thousands of titles, but none of the films I want are there
Catalog size is a weak measure of relevance. A reported total may combine movies, television episodes, live channels, documentaries, and short-form programs. Rights expire, titles move between services, and a large library can still be poor for a specific genre or film. Search for the particular movie rather than choosing solely by the largest headline number.
The service is unavailable in my country
Do not treat a VPN as the default fix. A service may not have authorization to show the same film outside the United States, and bypassing a territorial restriction can violate the service’s terms. Look for a legal service available in the reader’s market instead.
I do not want advertisements
Try Kanopy through a participating public library or university. Otherwise, the five main services are not ad-free alternatives to Netflix: advertising is how they provide free access. A paid rental, purchase, or subscription may be the only legal way to watch a particular title without commercials.
I want movies that are still new
No legitimate free app should be expected to provide every movie still in theaters or every new premium release. Free services use licensed windows and catalog titles. If a site promises every current theatrical film at no cost, requires a suspicious APK, or uses aggressive redirects, those are reasons to leave rather than advantages to celebrate.
I need to watch offline
Check Hoopla first if your library participates. Its lending model supports downloads for most movie titles, but monthly limits and title rules apply. Do not assume that a download option for purchased content on a rental marketplace also applies to free ad-supported movies.

Important status changes after 2022
- Amazon Freevee: IMDb TV became Freevee on April 27, 2022. Amazon later retired the Freevee branding and standalone app in 2025, moving the free content into Prime Video.
- Vudu: The service became Fandango at Home in 2024. The free, ad-supported catalog remains part of the service, but users should look for the current Fandango branding and distinguish free titles from rentals and purchases.
- Crackle: It was a legitimate 2022 option, but its parent company’s 2024 bankruptcy and liquidation proceedings mean it should not be recommended as a dependable current service without a live availability check.
- Tubi, Pluto TV, and Plex: These remain defensible current references, but title availability, app support, and catalogs are still volatile and territory-dependent.
That is why an article specifically about the best apps of 2022 should not simply copy an old list and present every brand as current. The historical ranking remains useful for understanding the 2022 market, while the status notes prevent readers from installing an obsolete app or mistaking a changed brand for a vanished service.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are these free movie apps legal?
Yes. The five ranked services operated through official websites or recognized app stores and offered licensed, ad-supported programming. Avoid unofficial apps such as Popcorn Time, Showbox, Soap2Day, or modded movie APKs; promises of every new release without payment are warning signs, not evidence of a better service.
Is Amazon Freevee still a separate app?
No. Freevee was the Amazon service’s 2022 name, but Amazon retired the standalone app and branding in 2025. Its free, ad-supported content moved into Prime Video, where readers should look for clearly marked free titles.
Can I download movies from these apps?
Do not assume so. Fandango at Home supports downloads for eligible purchased content on supported iOS devices, but that does not prove free ad-supported titles can be downloaded. Hoopla is the stronger offline option when a participating library provides access.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Which option is best without advertisements?
Kanopy is the best ad-free alternative for users with a participating public-library card or university login. Its catalog, ticket system, and access limits depend on the institution.
Do I need an account to use Tubi or Pluto TV?
Basic viewing on Tubi and Pluto TV can generally begin without a paid subscription, and Pluto permits basic viewing without registration. Accounts add watchlists, personalization, synchronization, or resume-watching. Vudu required an account for playback in 2022.
The Bottom Line
For the 2022 U.S. market, start with Tubi. Add Pluto TV if you like live channels, Freevee’s 2022 offering if you wanted Amazon’s licensed programming and originals, Plex if you already use its media tools, and Vudu if you are willing to separate free titles from rentals and purchases. For ad-free documentaries or offline library borrowing, check Kanopy and Hoopla before paying for another subscription.
