The official Hunger Games series page does not publish an authoritative quote list, either. A dependable selection would need to be checked against the specific novel or film, with each source clearly labeled.
Why book and film quotes need separate attribution
The Hunger Games exists as both a novel series by Suzanne Collins and a film series adapted by Lionsgate. A line spoken in a movie should not automatically be presented as Collins’s exact prose: adaptations can change wording, and a character’s speaker may differ between versions. Scholastic’s official series page identifies the books and film adaptations, but does not authenticate individual quotations.
How to check a quote before sharing it
- Identify the version. Note the novel and book title, or the particular film, rather than attributing a line simply to “The Hunger Games.”
- Check the primary source. For a book quotation, compare the wording with the relevant edition of the novel. For a film quotation, check the film itself and distinguish dialogue from any subtitle or transcript wording.
- Record the speaker and context. Confirm who says the line and what is happening in the scene; context can change how a short excerpt reads.
- Keep the attribution with the wording. Label book and film lines separately so readers can tell which version they are quoting.
What the series’ success figures do—and don’t—show
Scholastic reports that the five books have sold more than 100 million copies in print and digital formats worldwide, and that foreign publishing rights have been sold in 55 languages. Its series information also reports that The Hunger Games spent more than 260 consecutive weeks on the New York Times bestseller list and that the series spent more than 385 weeks on the series list. These are publisher-reported series-level figures; they do not rank individual quotations or establish which lines readers consider the greatest. The official page does not date each cumulative total.
Where to read the original wording
For book lines, consult the relevant novel rather than relying on an unattributed quote collection. Scholastic’s series page lists the original book along with editions and boxed sets; check the edition you are using for exact wording and surrounding context.
