There is no objective, definitive ranking of the best sci-fi shows of all time. This list weighs lasting writing and performances, originality, how thoughtfully each series uses speculative ideas, influence, consistency, and emotional or intellectual impact. It includes live-action and animated series, anthology and ongoing stories, and science fiction that brushes against horror or fantasy. Superhero shows are excluded; franchise spin-offs qualify on their own merits.
The result is a guide across space opera, time travel, speculative drama, comedy, and mystery—not a review-score or popularity chart. The order is an editorial judgment, informed by the different approaches in Rotten Tomatoes’ 2020 ranking and TIME’s 2024 guide, rather than a claim that one ranking can settle the question.
The 30 best sci-fi shows of all time
-
Star Trek: The Next Generation
A confident blend of exploration, ethical puzzles, and character drama, The Next Generation made episodic science fiction feel expansive without losing its human scale. Its idealism is not a weakness: the show repeatedly tests what a more thoughtful society might demand of its people.
-
The Twilight Zone
Few anthology series have used speculative premises as efficiently. A strange encounter, technology, or altered reality becomes a compact story about fear, power, prejudice, or the limits of certainty. Its format keeps the ideas fresh, while its best episodes still land as drama rather than just twists.

Battlestar Galactica (2004)
This reimagining turns a survival story into a sustained argument about war, faith, leadership, and what makes someone human. Its political tension and morally compromised characters give the space-opera framework real weight. It is one of the strongest examples of serialized sci-fi building consequence over time.
-
Doctor Who
Regeneration and time travel give Doctor Who a rare ability to reinvent its tone, cast, and scale while keeping its central invitation intact: go somewhere impossible and meet the people there. Its unevenness is part of a long-running format, but its imagination and cultural durability are extraordinary.
-
The Expanse
Political conflict among Earth, Mars, and the Belt gives this space drama a grounded social structure, while its larger mysteries steadily widen the stakes. It stands out for treating logistics, class, and competing interests as essential parts of the science-fiction world rather than decorative background.
-
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine
Set on a station rather than a roaming starship, Deep Space Nine could stay with the consequences of occupation, faith, and political compromise. Its serialized arcs challenged the franchise’s usually optimistic posture without abandoning its interest in community and moral choice.

The X-Files
Part paranormal mystery, part government-conspiracy thriller, The X-Files made uncertainty its engine. The weekly cases give the series range; the partnership between Mulder and Scully gives it an emotional center. Its influence is visible in the many genre dramas that pair a continuing mystery with episodic investigations.
-
Black Mirror
This anthology focuses on technology not as spectacle but as a pressure applied to ordinary human weaknesses. Its strongest episodes imagine recognizable social habits pushed into unnerving futures. The series can be bleak, but its most memorable stories earn their unease through sharp ideas and character choices.

Fringe
Fringe begins with bizarre investigations and grows into an ambitious story about parallel worlds, family, and the cost of changing history. Its combination of procedural momentum and long-form mythology makes its emotional turns feel earned rather than simply plotted.
-
Futurama
Under its animated comedy, Futurama builds a surprisingly coherent future and uses it to satirize work, bureaucracy, science, and popular culture. The jokes are plentiful, but the series also knows when to slow down for a sincere story about loneliness, friendship, or time.

Star Trek: The Original Series
The original Star Trek established a durable model for science fiction as a vehicle for social questions and adventure. Its production may look dated, but its central premise—a diverse crew encountering unfamiliar worlds—gave television a lasting vocabulary for optimistic speculative storytelling.
-
Firefly
With a small crew trying to stay independent on the edge of a powerful system, Firefly fuses frontier storytelling with space adventure. Its appeal rests on sharp ensemble chemistry and a lived-in world, not on scale. A short run limits what it could become, but the characters remain unusually vivid.
-
Severance
Severance turns a workplace procedure into a chilling question about identity, consent, and the boundaries between labor and private life. Its controlled visual style and slow-building mystery make the office itself feel like an experiment whose subjects—and audience—do not know the rules.
-
Andor
This political thriller shows how authoritarian power is experienced in daily life and how resistance takes shape through small, difficult decisions. Its grounded approach gives a familiar space-fantasy universe a different kind of tension: institutions, surveillance, and personal sacrifice matter as much as action.

-
Babylon 5
Designed around long-form political and personal arcs, Babylon 5 made a space station the center of a changing interstellar order. Its ambition lies in allowing diplomacy, war, and leadership to develop across time, creating a model for serialized science-fiction storytelling.
-
Lost
Although its island mystery draws on several genres, Lost earns its place through the way it uses speculative questions to examine memory, community, and choice. Its nonlinear structure invited viewers to assemble meaning together, making the act of watching part of its cultural impact.
-
Westworld
The first season of Westworld uses an artificial frontier to probe consciousness, exploitation, and the stories people tell to justify control. Its puzzle-box form can be demanding, but the show’s best ideas linger beyond the mechanics of its mysteries.
-
Orphan Black
Cloning is the premise; identity and chosen family are the heart of the series. Orphan Black gains momentum from a central performance that gives its many versions of one person distinct presence, while its conspiracy plot keeps the personal stakes moving.

Person of Interest
What begins as a crime procedural about a machine that predicts violent events becomes a broad story about surveillance, artificial intelligence, and competing ideas of security. Its gradual shift in scale is one of its strengths: the technology becomes frightening because of what people choose to do with it.
-
Dark
This German series treats time travel as a structure that can reshape families and entire communities, not merely a device for spectacle. Its intricate design rewards close attention, while its focus on grief and inheritance gives the puzzle an emotional core.
Rank #4
-
Sense8
Sense8 imagines a group of people linked across distance, using that connection to explore identity, empathy, and belonging. Its global ensemble and visual ambition distinguish it from more contained science-fiction dramas, even when its storytelling is more expansive than tightly plotted.
-
Quantum Leap
Each leap gives the series a fresh social setting and a concrete mission, while its time-travel premise keeps the protagonist’s own journey unresolved. The format makes science fiction accessible and humane: changing a life matters more than explaining every mechanism.

This British comedy sends an unlikely crew through space, then finds comic possibilities in isolation, machines, and the absurdity of survival. Its low-budget inventiveness is part of its identity, and its character-led humor keeps the premise lively.
-
Russian Doll
A repeating-day structure becomes a way to examine self-destruction, accountability, and the possibility of change. Russian Doll uses a familiar speculative device with unusual emotional directness, letting repetition reveal what its characters avoid seeing.
-
For All Mankind
By altering the history of the space race, For All Mankind builds an alternate timeline around ambition, national identity, and the personal cost of exploration. Its speculative premise remains closely tied to human and institutional choices.

Utopia (UK)
This conspiracy thriller uses a graphic novel and a secretive network to create a world where public-health fears and political violence collide. Its stylized unease is distinctive, though its intensity makes it a more challenging watch than many entries here.
-
Star Trek: Voyager
Stranded far from home, the crew of Voyager combines the franchise’s exploration format with the ongoing problem of getting back. The premise gives familiar ethical encounters a persistent survival context and lets the crew’s changing relationships carry the journey.
-
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Though rooted in superhero storytelling, this series increasingly embraces time travel, alternate realities, and speculative technology. It makes the list as a science-fiction-leaning franchise spin-off, not as a claim that superhero television and science fiction are interchangeable categories.
-
Farscape
Farscape puts an astronaut among strange species and unpredictable allies, then leans into the oddness of that situation. Its vivid designs and emotionally messy ensemble give its space adventure a distinctive, sometimes wonderfully strange personality.

How to choose your next sci-fi series
For a self-contained idea-driven watch, start with The Twilight Zone or Black Mirror. For long-form space politics, try The Expanse, Babylon 5, or Deep Space Nine. If you want a mystery that expands into a larger mythology, choose The X-Files, Fringe, or Dark. For lighter or more comic science fiction, look to Futurama, Red Dwarf, or Doctor Who.
Why these shows are ranked this way
Rank is not a measure of review scores, current popularity, or production scale. The list prioritizes lasting craft, original world-building, thoughtful use of speculative ideas, influence, consistency, and emotional or intellectual impact. Those criteria overlap with the questions TIME says it considered in its March 21, 2024 guide—whether a show reflects its era or humanity, contributes to television or its genre, changes how TV is made or watched, and connects emotionally—while Rotten Tomatoes’ April 19, 2020 list also considered longevity, spin-offs, imitation, and broader influence.
Genre boundaries remain debatable: science fiction often overlaps with fantasy, horror, mystery, and postapocalyptic storytelling. This ranking includes some border-crossers when speculative ideas are central, but leaves out superhero shows as a category, even though one franchise spin-off near the bottom draws on both modes. An IMDb chart of popular space sci-fi shows can help viewers discover titles, but popularity in that narrower category is not the same as an all-time quality ranking.
