Some are historical dramas with documentary-level attention to place and period; others are intimate character studies, animated experiments, political thrillers, or crowd-pleasing genre films. This ranking weighs filmmaking, critical and awards recognition, cultural impact, performances, rewatchability, and range—not Netflix’s weekly Top 10, which measures viewing activity rather than quality.
“Netflix original” is used here in the practical sense: a film Netflix markets as its own or distributes as an original in the relevant territory. Netflix has also acquired, co-financed, or exclusively distributed films that it did not produce. Availability changes by country, so check the Netflix title page for the United States, or your own region, before planning a screening.

-
Roma (2018)
Alfonso Cuarón’s black-and-white Spanish-language drama follows Cleo, a domestic worker in 1970s Mexico City, as private upheaval and political violence reshape the household where she works. Its observational patience, intricate sound design, and extraordinary cinematography make it feel both deeply personal and historically expansive. Roma received 10 Oscar nominations and won for Foreign Language Film, Director, and Cinematography.
-
Marriage Story (2019)
Noah Baumbach’s divorce drama avoids easy villains. Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver play two people whose love, work, parenthood, and legal representation become tangled during a separation. The film’s famous confrontation is powerful, but its quieter scenes are just as revealing. Laura Dern won the Oscar for Supporting Actress.

The Irishman (2019)
Martin Scorsese’s measured crime epic looks back over decades of organized crime, union politics, loyalty, and regret through Frank Sheeran, played by Robert De Niro. Al Pacino and Joe Pesci provide sharply different forms of menace and authority. Its long runtime—more than three hours—is part of the film’s deliberate meditation on memory and time, though it makes this a commitment rather than a casual watch.
-
The Power of the Dog (2021)
Jane Campion turns the Western into a tense study of masculinity, repression, class, and performance. Benedict Cumberbatch’s rancher uses cruelty as a form of control, while Kirsten Dunst, Jesse Plemons, and Kodi Smit-McPhee complicate the apparent power structure. The film earned 12 Oscar nominations, with Campion winning Director.
-
All Quiet on the Western Front (2022)
Edward Berger’s German-language adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque’s 1929 novel is a brutal account of young men absorbed into the machinery of the First World War. Its mud, artillery, and industrial-scale violence are designed to strip away romantic ideas about combat. It is not the first film adaptation of the novel, but it is a visually formidable and distinct interpretation. It won four Oscars, including International Feature Film.
-
Society of the Snow (2023)
J.A. Bayona’s Spanish-language survival drama revisits the 1972 Andes plane crash through the group’s collective struggle rather than reducing the event to a single heroic story. The film pays attention to grief, faith, practical decision-making, and the psychological cost of survival. It was nominated for International Feature Film and Makeup and Hairstyling.

Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio (2022)
This stop-motion interpretation relocates the story to Fascist-era Italy and gives its familiar themes—obedience, grief, and moral courage—a darker historical setting. Guillermo del Toro and Mark Gustafson use tactile animation to make every wooden movement, creature, and set feel physically present. It won the Oscar for Animated Feature.
-
The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (2018)
Joel and Ethan Coen’s six-part Western anthology moves from absurd comedy to bleak tragedy without losing its interest in American folklore. The connected stories examine luck, violence, storytelling, and the ways people invent meaning around death. Its episodic structure makes it particularly easy to watch in sections.
-
Beasts of No Nation (2015)
Cary Joji Fukunaga’s war drama follows Agu, a child drawn into a militia after his family is destroyed by conflict. Idris Elba gives the commander a charismatic, terrifying presence, while Abraham Attah anchors the film’s emotional perspective. It was Netflix’s first major original narrative feature release. Content warning: this film contains child-soldier recruitment, graphic violence, and severe trauma.
-
Mudbound (2017)
Dee Rees’s period drama follows two families—one Black, one white—on a Mississippi farm after the Second World War. Its multiple viewpoints expose racism, poverty, trauma, and the fragile limits of friendship. Rachel Morrison became the first woman nominated for an Oscar for Cinematography, a recognition that also reflects the film’s striking work with landscape and light.

Okja (2017)
Bong Joon Ho’s ecological adventure begins as a story about a girl and the genetically engineered animal she loves, then expands into a satire of corporations, branding, activism, and industrial food systems. Its tonal shifts—from fairy tale to chase film to political farce—are intentional. The film helped establish Netflix’s early strategy of backing ambitious, filmmaker-led features.

The Mitchells vs. the Machines (2021)
This energetic animated science-fiction comedy turns a family road trip into a battle against a technology uprising. Beneath the visual jokes and internet satire is a perceptive story about a father and daughter struggling to understand each other. The film was Oscar-nominated for Animated Feature and works equally well as a family adventure and a commentary on digital dependence.
-
Klaus (2019)
Sergio Pablos’s hand-drawn Christmas film reimagines the origins of Santa Claus through a spoiled postal student sent to an isolated, feuding island. Its visual style combines traditional character animation with convincing depth and light. More importantly, the story earns its sentiment by showing kindness spreading through practical, incremental acts rather than appearing as a sudden miracle.
-
Nimona (2023)
Adapted from ND Stevenson’s graphic novel, Nimona mixes science fiction, fantasy, comedy, and a pointed argument about who gets labelled dangerous. A disgraced knight and a shape-shifting teenager become reluctant allies against a supposedly perfect institution. Its fluid animation and unapologetic emotional directness make it one of Netflix’s most distinctive animated features.

The Sea Beast (2022)
Chris Williams’s animated adventure follows a young stowaway who joins a legendary monster hunter and begins questioning the official story about the creatures they pursue. The large-scale ocean battles are entertaining, but the film’s best idea is its challenge to inherited myths and state-approved history. It is a strong choice for viewers wanting spectacle without sacrificing a thoughtful moral premise.
-
The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar (2023)
This entry requires a qualification: Wes Anderson’s adaptation of Roald Dahl is a short film, not a feature-length movie. At roughly 40 minutes, it uses theatrical sets, rapid narration, and deliberately visible storytelling machinery to tell the story of a wealthy man learning a seemingly impossible skill. It won the Oscar for Live Action Short Film and belongs in any serious discussion of Netflix’s best films and shorts.
-
Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom (2020)
George C. Wolfe’s adaptation of August Wilson’s play confines much of its action to a Chicago recording studio in 1927, where musicians, producers, and performers argue over ownership and power. Viola Davis gives Ma Rainey a formidable authority, while Chadwick Boseman’s Levee is volatile, wounded, and ambitious. Both received acting Oscar nominations.
-
The Trial of the Chicago 7 (2020)
Aaron Sorkin’s courtroom drama dramatizes the prosecution of antiwar activists following the 1968 Democratic National Convention. Its fast exchanges and competing legal strategies make the material accessible, while the cast gives the political conflict human texture. It is based on historical events, not a documentary account; some dialogue and scenes are shaped for dramatic effect.

The Two Popes (2019)
Fernando Meirelles builds an unexpectedly warm two-hander around Jonathan Pryce’s Cardinal Bergoglio and Anthony Hopkins’s Pope Benedict XVI. The film imagines candid conversations about faith, institutional responsibility, doubt, and succession. Both actors received Oscar nominations, and their contrasting rhythms prevent the dialogue-heavy premise from becoming static.
-
Dolemite Is My Name (2019)
Craig Brewer’s exuberant biographical comedy stars Eddie Murphy as Rudy Ray Moore, a performer who creates the flamboyant Dolemite persona and refuses to wait for mainstream approval. It is a film about self-production in the fullest sense: writing, financing, casting, marketing, and making an audience from scratch. Murphy’s performance supplies both the comic force and the film’s emotional centre.

The King (2019)
David Michôd’s sombre historical drama follows Timothée Chalamet’s Hal as he becomes Henry V and inherits a kingdom shaped by war and manipulation. It draws on Shakespeare’s history plays, so it should not be treated as a literal transcription of the historical record. Its cold landscapes, muddy battles, and suspicious court politics create an unusually grim coming-of-age story.
-
Da 5 Bloods (2020)
Spike Lee combines a Vietnam War drama, a treasure hunt, a political history lesson, and a study of aging friendship. Four Black veterans return to Vietnam searching for the remains of their squad leader and buried gold, bringing unresolved memories and present-day grievances with them. The film’s shifts in tone are part of its argument about the way war continues after soldiers come home.

The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected) (2017)
Noah Baumbach’s family dramedy gathers Adam Sandler, Ben Stiller, Dustin Hoffman, and Elizabeth Marvel around a difficult father whose artistic ambitions have shaped his children’s insecurities. Sandler is especially good as a man whose anger and tenderness keep surfacing together. The film is funny, abrasive, and more interested in family patterns than tidy reconciliation.
-
The Lost Daughter (2021)
Maggie Gyllenhaal’s directorial debut adapts Elena Ferrante’s novel into an unsettling study of motherhood, memory, desire, and self-judgment. Olivia Colman plays an academic whose encounter with a young mother reopens feelings she would rather keep contained. Jessie Buckley appears in the character’s younger life, creating a conversation between past decisions and present unease. Colman received an Oscar nomination.
-
tick, tick… BOOM! (2021)
Lin-Manuel Miranda directs this musical about composer Jonathan Larson as he approaches his 30th birthday, balancing creative ambition with financial pressure and personal loss. Andrew Garfield’s performance captures both the exhilaration and exhaustion of a life organised around a work that may never arrive. The film is a lively introduction to Larson’s artistic world without pretending to be a neutral biography.
-
Hustle (2022)
Adam Sandler plays a basketball scout who discovers a gifted Spanish player and tries to get him into the NBA. The plot follows familiar sports-film architecture, but its training sequences, basketball knowledge, and easy chemistry make it unusually satisfying. Juancho Hernangómez brings credible athletic presence, while Sandler gives the mentor role an appealingly worn-down sincerity.

They Cloned Tyrone (2023)
Juel Taylor’s debut feature follows a neighbourhood hustler, pimp, and sex worker who uncover a conspiracy beneath their community. The film borrows from blaxploitation, science fiction, conspiracy thrillers, and social satire, using genre mechanics to explore racial control and manufactured identity. John Boyega, Teyonah Parris, and Jamie Foxx give the strange premise a grounded comic rhythm.
-
Rebel Ridge (2024)
Jeremy Saulnier’s character-driven thriller begins with a man trying to pay his cousin’s bail and runs into a corrupt local justice system. Aaron Pierre’s performance gives the protagonist restraint and physical credibility, while the film builds tension through procedure, power, and withheld information rather than constant gunfire. It is an action film for viewers who prefer escalation to spectacle.
-
Woman of the Hour (2023)
Anna Kendrick’s directorial debut reconstructs the disturbing real-life appearance of serial killer Rodney Alcala on The Dating Game. The film is less interested in sensationalising the killer than in examining the social conditions that allowed his charm and performance to work. Its television-show setting creates a chilling contrast between entertainment, misogyny, and danger.

KPop Demon Hunters (2025)
This animated musical fantasy follows K-pop stars who protect their fans from supernatural threats. It is a bright, high-energy addition to Netflix’s animation catalogue, with pop performance, supernatural action, and a story about public identity working together. Netflix’s Tudum has called it the company’s most popular film according to its internal viewing measurement; that is a Netflix claim about popularity, not independent proof that it is the most acclaimed or culturally important film on this list.

How this list differs from Netflix’s “best movies” pages
Netflix’s genre and awards pages can contain films it licenses rather than produces or distributes as originals. Rotten Tomatoes’ current Netflix guide is useful for finding well-reviewed films, but it also includes titles such as Memento, Godzilla Minus One, The Green Knight, and 1917. Those may be excellent films, but they do not automatically belong on a list of Netflix originals.
The same distinction applies to popularity. Netflix’s Top 10 data reports weekly viewing by country, including views and hours watched. A weekly ranking can identify what subscribers are watching; it cannot, by itself, establish which films are best.

FAQ
Are all 30 films produced by Netflix?
No. Netflix’s original branding can refer to films it produced, co-financed, acquired, or distributes exclusively in a territory. This list uses “Netflix original” to mean a film Netflix presents or distributes as an original, not necessarily one it fully financed or produced.
Which film on the list won the most Oscars?
Roma received 10 nominations and won three Oscars: Foreign Language Film, Director, and Cinematography. All Quiet on the Western Front won four Oscars, while Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio won Animated Feature.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Is The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar a feature film?
No. It is a short film of approximately 40 minutes. It is included as an explicitly labelled exception because it is one of Netflix’s most accomplished screen works and won the Oscar for Live Action Short Film.
Are these films available on Netflix everywhere?
No. Netflix’s catalogue varies by country and changes over time. Search for the title in your local Netflix app immediately before watching; availability in the United States does not guarantee availability elsewhere.
The Bottom Line
For the strongest single starting point, choose Roma. It represents the combination of artistic ambition, historical awareness, technical achievement, and emotional precision that makes Netflix’s best original films worth separating from its broader catalogue. For a shorter viewing session, choose The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar; for animation, Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio; and for a tense contemporary thriller, Rebel Ridge. Check your regional Netflix listing before publication or viewing, since both rights and catalogues change.
