The best TV of 2024 ranges from returning favorites such as Slow Horses and Pachinko to new dramas including Shōgun, Fallout and The Sympathizer. This critic-led guide brings together standout series across drama, comedy, animation, reality competition and documentary, with season numbers, score snapshots and the streaming services listed for each title. It is a curated selection, not an objective or permanent ranking: Rotten Tomatoes scores can change, and streaming catalogs vary by country.
What are the best TV shows of 2024?
Use the table to find a show by format, tone and streaming service. Streaming services below reflect the listings in the cited coverage, not a guarantee of current availability in every country. Check the service catalog for your market before starting.

What should I binge next?
For a new series
Start with Shōgun for a historical epic, The Sympathizer for a political story shaped by the aftermath of the Vietnam War, or Fallout for post-apocalyptic science fiction. For comedy, try English Teacher or Nobody Wants This; for a darker crime setting, choose The Penguin. Matlock is a reboot, while Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist and Mary & George round out the new-to-this-list choices with crime and court intrigue.
For a returning favorite
The strongest Rotten Tomatoes snapshots among the returning seasons include Slow Horses season 4, Arcane season 2 and Heartstopper season 3, each listed at 100% from critics in the January 2025 guide. For an established comedy, the selection spans Hacks, Girls5eva, Colin from Accounts and Shrinking. Continuing dramas include Pachinko, Industry, Interview with the Vampire, Silo and The Diplomat.

For something beyond scripted drama
The Traitors brings reality competition to the list, and Wise Guy: David Chase and The Sopranos is its documentary selection. The range matters: 2024’s best-reviewed TV was not limited to one genre or viewing style.
Why are some 2024 best-of lists different?
There is no single universal ranking. Rotten Tomatoes’ guide groups Certified Fresh series and presents critic and audience scores alongside consensus blurbs; TIME’s mid-2024 selections offer a separate editorial perspective. Their lists overlap in the year they cover, but they are not identical kinds of judgment. A show’s position in this guide reflects the cited list where a rank is supplied, not a claim that every viewer should prefer it to everything below.

Returning seasons feature heavily, so the season number is part of the recommendation: a high score for season 4 is not a score for the whole series. For new viewers, check whether a title is a standalone story or part of an ongoing series before committing; the information here identifies new entries and season numbers where established, but does not provide episode counts or viewing times.
Where can I stream Shōgun, Fallout and Slow Horses?
The listings in the table place Shōgun on FX / Hulu, Fallout on Prime Video and Slow Horses on Apple TV+. These are service labels from the coverage used for this guide, not universal availability guarantees: rights and catalogs differ by country, and services may change what they carry. Search the title in the streaming apps available in your region for the current listing.

TIME reported in 2024 that FX called Shōgun its most-watched show ever at that time. That is a dated network statement, not a timeless audience measurement.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What stands out across the year
Prestige and genre drama sit alongside sitcoms, animation, reality competition and documentary. The picks also offer different perspectives: Shōgun centers historical cultural collision; The Sympathizer adapts Viet Thanh Nguyen’s Pulitzer-winning novel about a Vietnamese communist double agent after the Vietnam War; and We Are Lady Parts follows an all-Muslim, all-female London punk band. At the other end of the genre spectrum, Fallout brings a video-game world to television, while The Penguin turns Gotham into a grounded crime setting.
