The 23 best Christmas movies of all time

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Christmas cinema is much bigger than Santa, snow and family comedy. The strongest films use the holiday as a pressure cooker for loneliness, faith, class, memory, romance or survival. Some are traditional Christmas stories; others simply understand what the season does to people.

This selection of 23 favors films with lasting artistic value, memorable performances and a strong sense of place. It includes features, animation, horror and one television special. The ranking is editorial rather than mathematical: there is no objective way to compare The Apartment with Home Alone, but both belong in the Christmas canon for very different reasons.

Definition: A Christmas movie does not need Santa in the plot. Christmas can be the central subject, an essential setting or the emotional framework that makes the story work. That is why films such as Die Hard, Carol and The Holdovers appear alongside traditional family favorites.

For context, Rotten Tomatoes’ current 100-film guide ranks titles primarily by Tomatometer score, while the British Film Institute takes a broader historical and cultural view. This list follows the broader approach, while keeping the focus on films worth returning to.

The 23 best Christmas movies of all time

  1. It’s a Wonderful Life (1946)

Director: Frank Capra   Format: Feature film

Frank Capra’s film begins as a small-town Christmas drama and becomes a profound examination of despair, responsibility and community. George Bailey’s crisis is not solved by a shopping spree or a sentimental speech; it is answered by showing him the human value of an ordinary life. The film received five Academy Award nominations and became an annual holiday tradition long after its original release.

Its reputation can obscure how dark it is. The Christmas miracle works because the film first takes George’s financial anxiety and hopelessness seriously.

  2. Meet Me in St. Louis (1944)

Director: Vincente Minnelli   Format: Feature film

This beautifully observed family musical covers an entire year, but its Christmas section gives the film its emotional center. Judy Garland’s performance of “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” is famous because it is not uncomplicatedly cheerful: the Smith family faces a move, uncertainty and the threat of losing the life they know.

With its domestic detail, changing seasons and carefully composed Technicolor images, the film shows how Christmas memories are made rather than merely displayed.

  3. The Shop Around the Corner (1940)

Director: Ernst Lubitsch   Format: Feature film

Two employees in a Budapest leather shop dislike each other in person while falling in love through anonymous letters. The Christmas setting adds commercial bustle and emotional urgency without turning the film into a sugary fantasy.

Lubitsch’s comedy is elegant but humane. The shop’s employees are worried about money, status and romantic disappointment, making this one of the most adult and perceptive Christmas romances ever made. It also provided the basic inspiration for later films including You’ve Got Mail.

  4. Miracle on 34th Street (1947)

Director: George Seaton   Format: Feature film

When a department-store Santa claims to be the real Kris Kringle, the question becomes a courtroom matter. The film’s charm comes from the way it treats belief as something connected to imagination, generosity and resistance to commercial cynicism.

Maureen O’Hara, Edmund Gwenn and a young Natalie Wood give the story a grounded human scale. The original won three Academy Awards and inspired numerous later adaptations, but the 1947 version remains the definitive one.

  5. The Holdovers (2023)

Director: Alexander Payne   Format: Feature film

A disliked teacher, a grieving student and a school cook are stranded at a New England boarding school over the holidays. The premise sounds like a seasonal comedy, but the film is really about people who have nowhere else to go.

Its early-1970s setting, wintry landscapes and patient character work make Christmas feel less like decoration than a period when private pain becomes impossible to avoid. Paul Giamatti, Da’Vine Joy Randolph and Dominic Sessa give the film its bruised, funny and deeply compassionate tone.

  6. The Apartment (1960)

Director: Billy Wilder   Format: Feature film

Baxter lends his apartment to senior executives for their affairs, hoping the arrangement will advance his career. Set around Christmas and New Year, the film gradually exposes the loneliness and moral compromises beneath corporate success.

Hallmark 3-Movie Collection: Christmas on Duty, The Christmas Cup, Never Kiss a Man in a Christmas Sweater [DVD]
    • Christmas on Duty - After a snowstorm prevents all the presents from being delivered to base, two rival marines must team up for a special mission…to save Christmas. Stars Janel Parrish, Parker Young, and Peter Jacobson.
    • The Christmas Cup - Marine Kelly leads her hometown team in the Christmas Cup against the neighboring town with help from Fireman Quinn. That is until he becomes the competition. Starring Rhiannon Fish and Ben Rosenbaum.

Jack Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine make the romance tender without pretending that either character has an easy life. Wilder’s film is funny, bleak and humane in equal measure, which is why it remains one of the great adult Christmas movies.

  7. Fanny and Alexander (1982)

Director: Ingmar Bergman   Format: Feature film

The opening Christmas celebration is among cinema’s richest depictions of family ritual: food, theatre, ghosts, music and an entire household moving through rooms glowing with candlelight. The story later becomes much harsher, but that opening establishes the imaginative world the children are desperate to preserve.

Bergman’s autobiographical drama is available in both theatrical and longer television versions. Either way, its Christmas sequence demonstrates how production design and memory can turn a holiday gathering into a complete universe.

  8. The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992)

Director: Brian Henson   Format: Feature film

Michael Caine plays Ebenezer Scrooge with complete seriousness while the Muppets surround him with songs, jokes and felt-faced chaos. That balance is the secret of the adaptation: the comedy never cancels Charles Dickens’s anger about poverty, exploitation and social responsibility.

Gonzo’s narration, Caine’s commitment and the memorable songs make this arguably the most rewatchable version of A Christmas Carol. It works for children without talking down to adults.

  9. The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)

Director: Henry Selick   Format: Animated feature

Jack Skellington, the Pumpkin King, discovers Christmas Town and decides to take over the holiday. The resulting stop-motion musical is a gothic fantasy about envy, identity and the danger of treating another culture’s traditions as a costume.

Tim Burton wrote the story, produced the film and supplied its central concept, but Henry Selick directed it. That distinction matters, especially because the marketing title can obscure Selick’s authorship of the extraordinary stop-motion filmmaking.

  10. Klaus (2019)

Director: Sergio Pablos   Format: Animated feature

A selfish postal cadet is sent to a remote, feuding island and discovers that delivering toys can change a community. The film’s Santa origin story is inventive, but its real subject is the way small acts of kindness become social habits.

Klaus combines hand-drawn sensibility with digital techniques, giving its winter landscapes unusual depth and texture. It is both a family adventure and a surprisingly thoughtful film about cycles of violence.

  11. Home Alone (1990)

Director: Chris Columbus   Format: Feature film

Kevin McCallister’s family accidentally leaves him behind at Christmas, forcing the child to defend his house from burglars. The traps are cartoonishly elaborate, but the film earns its emotional ending by pairing slapstick with Kevin’s fear of being forgotten.

John Williams’s score, the decorated suburban house and the snowy Chicago setting have made the film a visual shorthand for late-20th-century Christmas. Its sentiment works because the comedy is so precisely staged.

  12. Elf (2003)

Director: Jon Favreau   Format: Feature film

Will Ferrell’s Buddy is an adult raised among elves who travels to New York to find his biological father. The performance could easily have become exhausting, but Ferrell’s sincerity gives the character an emotional anchor.

The film’s best joke is also its central idea: modern Christmas has become so commercial and cynical that genuine enthusiasm looks absurd. Elf turns that enthusiasm into a virtue without losing its comic edge.

  13. White Christmas (1954)

Director: Michael Curtiz   Format: Feature film

Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney and Vera-Ellen headline a musical built around friendship, performance and a Vermont inn. The story is slight, but the songs, choreography and star chemistry are enduring.

The title song had already become a cultural institution through Bing Crosby’s earlier recording. The 1954 film gives it a lavish visual home and remains a defining example of the postwar studio musical. The Library of Congress added it to the National Film Registry in 2025.

  14. National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation (1989)

Director: Jeremiah S. Chechik   Format: Feature film

Clark Griswold wants the perfect family Christmas and responds to every setback by making the celebration larger, brighter and more dangerous. The comedy is broad, but the targets are recognizable: debt, forced togetherness, workplace frustration and the pressure to manufacture happiness.

Unlike many seasonal comedies, it understands that family rituals can be both loving and unbearable. The result is a durable holiday film whose disasters have become household quotations.

  15. Die Hard (1988)

Director: John McTiernan   Format: Feature film

John McClane battles terrorists during a Christmas Eve office party at Los Angeles’s Nakatomi Plaza. Christmas is not the plot, but it is an essential setting: the party brings the characters together, the holiday music shapes the tone and the season’s language keeps returning through the action.

Whether one calls it a Christmas movie or a Christmas-set action movie, its construction is exceptional. The confined building, practical stunts and exhausted hero still make it one of the most influential action films of its era.

  16. Gremlins (1984)

Director: Joe Dante   Format: Feature film

A cute creature given as a Christmas present multiplies into a destructive horde. Joe Dante uses the setup to satirize consumer culture, small-town nostalgia and the sanitized image of holiday entertainment.

It is simultaneously a monster movie, a black comedy and a Christmas film. The contrast between decorations and violence is the point, not a contradiction. Its PG-13 rating also helped expose the need for a category between family fare and adult horror.

  17. Black Christmas (1974)

Director: Bob Clark   Format: Feature film

Before A Christmas Story, Bob Clark made this influential slasher about a sorority house terrorized during the holiday break. The seasonal setting intensifies the isolation: the house is decorated, families are calling and the building should feel safe, yet the students are trapped with an unseen threat.

Its phone calls, subjective camera work and refusal to provide easy answers helped shape later horror. This recommendation refers to the 1974 original, not the 2006 or 2019 remakes.

  18. Carol (2015)

Director: Todd Haynes   Format: Feature film

In 1950s New York, shop assistant Therese meets Carol, an older woman navigating divorce and social restrictions. Christmas shopping and department-store glamour form the surface of the story, while the season’s promises of domestic happiness sharpen the characters’ sense of what they cannot openly have.

Haynes, Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara create a romance of glances, silence and small acts of courage. It is a Christmas film about desire and constraint rather than celebration.

  19. Tangerine (2015)

Director: Sean Baker   Format: Feature film

On Christmas Eve in Los Angeles, Sin-Dee searches for the lover who betrayed her while her friend Alexandra prepares for a singing performance. Shot on smartphones with a kinetic, street-level energy, the film finds humor and tenderness amid precarious lives.

Its connection to Christmas is not conventional. The holiday provides a backdrop of expectations, public celebration and private hurt, while the friendship at the center becomes the film’s real source of warmth.

  20. Tokyo Godfathers (2003)

Director: Satoshi Kon   Format: Animated feature

Three unhoused people discover an abandoned baby on Christmas Eve and set out to find its parents. The journey moves through Tokyo’s streets with the momentum of a comedy, but it gradually reveals histories of regret, family conflict and survival.

Satoshi Kon’s animation is visually lively without softening the characters’ circumstances. The film’s Christmas message is not about perfection; it is about unexpected responsibility and the possibility of belonging.

  21. The Dead (1987)

Director: John Huston   Format: Feature film

John Huston’s final film adapts James Joyce’s “The Dead,” following an annual Epiphany gathering in Dublin. The dinner is full of music, food, political argument and social performance, but the evening gradually becomes an examination of memory and emotional distance.

Snow falls across Ireland in the film’s famous closing meditation, turning a private revelation into something vast and elegiac. It is one of the finest examples of a Christmas-season film made for adults.

  22. Arthur Christmas (2011)

Directors: Sarah Smith and Barry Cook   Format: Animated feature

Santa’s younger son, Arthur, sets out to deliver one child’s forgotten present before Christmas morning. The North Pole is presented as a vast logistics operation, complete with technology, military precision and an enormous delivery crew.

The film’s warmth comes from its argument that efficiency is not the same as care. Arthur believes every child matters, and the animation turns that simple conviction into a brisk, funny adventure.

  23. The Preacher’s Wife (1996)

Director: Penny Marshall   Format: Feature film

Whitney Houston plays Julia, whose pastor husband receives help from an angel played by Denzel Washington. The film updates the basic premise of The Bishop’s Wife with a Black church community, gospel music and concerns about urban development and social responsibility.

Its musical performances are a major attraction, but the story also understands the exhaustion behind public faith. Christmas becomes a chance to repair a marriage and reconnect a congregation with its purpose.

  24. Happiest Season (2020)

Director: Clea DuVall   Format: Feature film

Abby believes she is spending Christmas with her girlfriend’s family, only to learn that Harper has not come out to them. The familiar holiday-home setup becomes a sharp examination of family image, secrecy and the pressure to perform happiness.

The ensemble comedy moves between awkwardness and genuine pain, while its LGBTQ+ perspective gives the traditional Christmas reunion a different emotional structure. Its ending chooses honesty without pretending that family acceptance is automatic.

  25. A Charlie Brown Christmas (1965)

Director: Bill Melendez   Format: Television special

Charlie Brown is tired of the commercial noise surrounding Christmas and searches for something more meaningful. The 25-minute special answers him with a fragile little tree, a children’s performance and Vince Guaraldi’s jazz score.

Its hand-drawn simplicity and pauses make it feel unlike most modern holiday animation. It is technically a television special rather than a feature film, but its influence and annual place in Christmas viewing make its inclusion unavoidable.

FAQ

What is the best Christmas movie of all time?

It’s a Wonderful Life is the strongest all-round choice because it combines holiday atmosphere with a serious story about despair, community and the value of an ordinary life. For a lighter choice, Home Alone and Elf remain especially reliable.

Is Die Hard really a Christmas movie?

Yes, in the broader sense used by this list. The action takes place during a Christmas Eve office party, and the holiday shapes the setting, music, character relationships and themes. It is more accurately described as a Christmas-set action film than a traditional Christmas story.

Which Christmas movies are suitable for adults rather than children?

Try The Apartment, Carol, The Dead, The Holdovers, Tangerine or Fanny and Alexander. They use Christmas to explore loneliness, romance, memory, class or family conflict rather than presenting it only as a children’s holiday.

Is A Charlie Brown Christmas a movie?

It is a 25-minute animated television special, not a feature-length film. It is included because it has become one of the most important and enduring Christmas-screen traditions.

The Bottom Line

The best Christmas movies do not all offer the same kind of comfort. Some find it in family, some in romance, friendship, faith or second chances; others use the holiday to expose loneliness and hypocrisy. Start with It’s a Wonderful Life for the classic emotional experience, then move outside the familiar formula with The Dead, Tokyo Godfathers, Black Christmas or Tangerine.
