What are the Perseids?
The Perseids are an annual meteor shower associated with particles left behind by comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle. Earth passes through trails of this debris, and particles interacting with the atmosphere produce the bright streaks called meteors. NASA lists the meteors’ velocity as 37 miles (59 kilometers) per second and says Swift-Tuttle takes 133 years to orbit the Sun. NASA’s Perseids overview gives these figures and background.
When did the 2026 Perseids peak?
NASA expected the 2026 peak on the night of August 12 through the morning of August 13. Its overview listed the shower as active through August 24. Both the peak and activity window are now in the past. NASA’s overview and its 2026 observing guide give those dates.
A new Moon coincided with the 2026 peak, so moonlight did not brighten the sky that night. That favorable lunar timing did not guarantee visibility at any particular location: clouds, fog, and local light pollution still mattered. NASA’s guide noted the new Moon for the 2026 event.

Where do the Perseids appear in the sky?
The shower’s apparent radiant—the point from which its meteors seem to spread—is in the constellation Perseus. That does not mean viewers need to look directly at Perseus. NASA says Perseids can appear anywhere overhead, so a broad view of the sky is more useful than fixing your gaze on the constellation. NASA’s overview explains the radiant, and NASA’s 2026 viewing article advises looking across the sky.
How many meteors per hour can you see?
NASA’s 2026 overview lists about 25 meteors per hour under dark skies. Its 2026 observing guide and event article say 50–100 per hour may be possible under favorable conditions. These are estimates, not a guaranteed personal count; the number an observer sees depends on the sky and viewing conditions. They are not a verified tally of meteors actually seen worldwide during the 2026 peak. See NASA’s overview, its observing guide, and NASA’s event article.

How to prepare for a future Perseid watch
Once you have checked the dates for the year you plan to observe, these steps can make a long watch more comfortable. NASA’s advice is to use unaided vision; a telescope or binoculars is not necessary.
- Choose a dark, clear location. Get away from city lights where practical, and check the local forecast for clouds and fog.
- Get comfortable. Bring warm layers, water, and, if useful, a blanket for sitting or lying back during a longer session.
- Allow your eyes to adjust. Give them 20–30 minutes in the dark before expecting to see fainter meteors.
- Look broadly and be patient. Watch a wide area of sky rather than focusing only on Perseus. NASA’s Janet Sudnik puts the basic advice this way: “The best way to watch the Perseid meteor shower is to find a location with dark skies, give your eyes 20 to 30 minutes to adjust to the darkness, and simply look up.” Sudnik’s NASA article was published August 5, 2026.
NASA pointed people facing cloudy skies to a livestream for the 2026 event. That was a resource for that event, not a confirmed option for future years; check NASA’s current event information before relying on a livestream.
