For a critic-led starting point, watch Adolescence; for lighter viewing, try Long Story Short or North of North. This curated list combines notable new series with standout returning seasons, balancing critic reception, genre variety and documented viewing reach—not claiming one objective “best” ranking. Netflix availability varies by country, so check your local catalog.
How this list is ranked
“Best” depends on what you want from a show. The order below gives priority to distinctive storytelling and the critical-reception evidence available for new series, while making room for different genres and selected returning seasons. Audience figures are included as evidence of viewing engagement, not artistic quality.
Metacritic’s year-end ranking covers eligible first-year series that debuted in the United States in 2025, excludes returning shows and series with fewer than seven reviews, and ranks eligible titles using aggregated critic grades. Rotten Tomatoes’ 2025 guide is an evolving Certified Fresh selection, not a fixed Netflix-only ranking. Neither source provides a definitive top 20 of Netflix shows and seasons.

- Comedy: Try the animated family perspective of Long Story Short, the Inuit cultural setting of North of North, or Tina Fey’s The Four Seasons.
- Romance and coming of age: Forever.
- Crime and suspense: Dept. Q, Karma, or The Beast in Me.
- Big returning-season conversation: Wednesday, Stranger Things, or Squid Game.
- Different storytelling formats: Choose Love, Death & Robots for an anthology or Squid Game: The Challenge for reality competition.
What the ratings and viewing figures do—and do not—tell you
Metacritic’s Metascore is an aggregation of critics’ grades for titles that meet its eligibility rules; its cited ranking is limited to first-year U.S. debuts and does not rank returning seasons. Rotten Tomatoes’ 2025 guide selects Certified Fresh shows and is updated over time. Netflix’s reported views are total hours viewed divided by runtime, and the cited numbers cover the second half of 2025. These are different measures and should not be read as interchangeable rankings.

Check Netflix availability in your country
Netflix says some originals are available only in particular territories, and its catalog can vary by country. Confirm each title on Netflix in your location before planning a watchlist. Netflix’s general policy says original shows and films typically release globally at 12:00 a.m. Pacific Time, but weekly releases and original broadcast schedules can differ; a title’s local detail page is the better guide to exceptions.
