The 20 Best Horror Movies on Netflix in 2025, Ranked from Least to Most Scary

From accessible horror-comedies to oppressive folk horror and graphic survival horror, these are 20 Netflix-associated horror films ranked from least to most scary, with content warnings and recommendations by fear type.

The least scary film on this list is Vampires vs. the Bronx; the most visceral is Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Between those two extremes are horror-comedies, slashers, supernatural hauntings, found footage, folk horror, psychological thrillers, and survival films. The ranking below moves from accessible and often funny choices to movies built around sustained dread, entrapment, possession, disturbing imagery, and psychological dislocation.

Because the title refers to 2025, this is framed as a retrospective of the Netflix-era selection associated with that year. The U.S. catalog was checked on August 13, 2026. Netflix availability changes by date and country, so the list is not a guarantee that every film was available throughout calendar year 2025 or remains available in your location.

How this ranking works

“Scary” is not one thing. A horror-comedy can be violent without being especially frightening, while a quiet film about isolation can produce more sustained dread than a movie full of jump scares. This list therefore weighs atmosphere, supernatural threat, violence, psychological disturbance, claustrophobia, surprise, and accessibility for people who do not usually watch horror.

The ranking moves from relatively approachable, funny, or adventure-led films to stories built around entrapment, possession, disturbing imagery, and psychological dislocation. It is an editorial ranking, not a formal scare index, audience poll, or personal-viewing report.

Availability note: This is a retrospective look at the Netflix-era horror selection associated with 2025. The U.S. catalog was checked on August 13, 2026, but streaming rights can change at any time and differ by country. A film’s appearance here is not a guarantee that it was available throughout every day of calendar year 2025—or that it remains available where you live.

20. Vampires vs. the Bronx

Label: Horror-comedy
Scare level: Accessible
Content notes: Vampire attacks, violence, threatened neighborhoods

A lively vampire adventure is the easiest entry point on this list. The story follows young people who discover that vampires are moving into their Bronx neighborhood while a more familiar kind of redevelopment is taking place around them. The danger is real, but the film’s dominant qualities are energy, humor, community spirit, and social commentary about gentrification.

There are attacks and moments of peril, yet the tone remains closer to a youth-oriented adventure than a nightmarish descent. Viewers who want horror without relentless misery should start here. It is also a good choice for a group with mixed tolerance for scary movies.

19. The Babysitter

Label: Horror-comedy
Scare level: Playfully violent
Content notes: Satanic ritual, gore, teen peril, murder

The Babysitter turns a teenager’s frightening discovery into a colorful, fast-moving horror-comedy. Cole learns that his babysitter and her friends are involved in a satanic ritual, leaving him to survive a night of betrayal, danger, and increasingly extravagant violence.

The premise is sinister, but the presentation is deliberately heightened and comic-book-like. Gore and murder keep it firmly in horror territory; jokes, bright visuals, and an exaggerated cast prevent the film from becoming oppressively frightening. It is more suitable for viewers who enjoy horror as spectacle than for those seeking slow, serious dread.

18. Heart Eyes

Label: Slasher
Scare level: Playful slasher
Content notes: Stalking, murder, masked-killer violence

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This 2025 slasher combines romance, comedy, and a masked killer who targets couples on Valentine’s Day. That unusual setup gives the film a crowd-pleasing, genre-aware tone: the threat is recognizable, but the movie is also interested in romantic chemistry and comic timing.

It still contains stalking and murder, so “playful” does not mean harmless. Viewers who find pursuit, targeted violence, or relationship-based killing especially upsetting should take the warning seriously. For everyone else, its mixture of romance and slasher mechanics makes it more entertaining than psychologically devastating.

17. Fear Street: Prom Queen

Label: Slasher
Scare level: Moderate
Content notes: High-school violence, bloodshed, killer pursuit

Fear Street: Prom Queen uses a retro high-school setting and a familiar killer-on-the-loose structure. Suspense builds around the threat, while the prom-night environment supplies the franchise-friendly atmosphere expected from a teen slasher.

There is bloodshed and danger, but the film does not maintain the kind of existential or supernatural dread found near the top of this ranking. It is a sensible choice for viewers who want a traditional slasher with accessible pacing and recognizable genre ingredients.

16. Zombieland: Double Tap

Label: Horror-comedy
Scare level: Adventure-first
Content notes: Zombie attacks, graphic comic violence, survival peril

The sequel’s zombies create regular danger, but banter, action, and comic set pieces control the viewing experience. The characters are generally more likely to respond to an attack with a joke or an inventive tactic than with sustained helplessness.

That makes Zombieland: Double Tap one of the least frightening selections here despite its horror setting. It works especially well when the group wants a post-apocalyptic road movie with zombies rather than a genuinely nerve-shredding survival film.

15. Fear Street Part 1: 1994

Label: Slasher
Scare level: Moderately intense
Content notes: Explicit violence, supernatural threat, murder, teen peril

The first Fear Street film raises the intensity with a young ensemble, persistent killer attacks, explicit violence, and a supernatural mythology that extends beyond a single night. It has the propulsive structure of a pop-horror franchise, so it remains approachable even as the body count rises.

Compared with the comedies above it, the threat feels more continuous and the attacks more consequential. It is a strong middle-ground pick for viewers who want bloodier horror but are not yet looking for slow-burn psychological devastation.

14. Scream

Label: Slasher
Scare level: Suspenseful
Content notes: Stalking, murder, graphic attacks

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Scream combines a murder mystery with a masked-killer slasher and a self-aware understanding of horror conventions. The humor and genre knowledge make it inviting, but they do not remove the tension: characters are stalked, isolated, and attacked with sudden bursts of violence.

Its scare profile comes more from anticipation and uncertainty than from supernatural terror. You are often watching characters try to work out the killer’s identity while knowing that the next apparently safe moment may collapse into violence. That balance makes it more frightening than the list’s earlier horror-comedies without becoming relentlessly bleak.

13. The Ritual

Label: Folk horror
Scare level: Sustained dread
Content notes: Grief, friendship breakdown, wilderness danger, creature violence

Four friends enter a Swedish forest and encounter a danger connected to folk and supernatural horror. The setting does much of the work: darkness, isolation, unfamiliar terrain, and the inability to summon help create a feeling that the characters are moving deeper into a trap.

The Ritual is not dependent on a jump scare every few minutes. Its tension grows through exhaustion, guilt, fractured friendship, and the sense that the forest contains a force the group cannot properly understand. It is a particularly good choice for viewers who find wilderness and isolation more frightening than conventional haunted houses.

12. The Black Phone

Label: Supernatural horror
Scare level: Nerve-racking
Content notes: Kidnapping, child endangerment, captivity, murder

Rank #3
HORROR CLASSICS 50 MOVIE MEGAPACK

A boy is trapped in a basement by a kidnapper and begins receiving calls from the previous victims on a disconnected black telephone. The premise creates fear before the supernatural element fully develops: the basement is a confined space, the captor is unpredictable, and escape appears almost impossible.

The ghostly calls give the story an additional layer as the voices try to help the captive survive. Its strongest scares come from the collision between a grounded kidnapping thriller and an increasingly active supernatural presence. The child-endangerment material is central and may be too upsetting for some viewers even when the film is not relying on constant gore.

11. A Quiet Place Part II

Label: Creature feature
Scare level: Highly suspenseful
Content notes: Creature attacks, family peril, death, child danger

In this world, sound-sensitive creatures turn ordinary noise into a potential death sentence. A dropped object, a cry, or a badly timed movement can expose the characters, making silence itself a source of suspense.

The film’s fear is built around vulnerability and responsibility. Protecting children and other survivors means controlling panic while dealing with creatures that can attack without warning. It is more nerve-racking than many conventional slashers because the danger is not confined to a killer’s appearance; it is embedded in every sound the characters might accidentally make.

10. Cam

Label: Psychological horror
Scare level: Uncanny and destabilizing
Content notes: Sexual content, identity theft, online harassment, loss of control

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cam follows a cam performer whose online identity is taken over by an uncanny double. The horror is not simply that someone has stolen an account. The protagonist is forced to watch another version of herself perform online while friends, customers, and authorities struggle to understand what is happening.

That premise turns technology into a source of identity horror. Public exposure, loss of control, and the inability to prove that something impossible has occurred create a particularly modern kind of panic. The film is less about conventional monsters than about watching a person’s identity become inaccessible—even while it remains visible to everyone else.

9. Creep

Label: Found footage
Scare level: Intimate psychological dread
Content notes: Social manipulation, disturbing behavior, implied violence

A videographer accepts a job from a stranger and gradually realizes that the encounter is far more disturbing than it first appeared. Because the story stays close to this small, uncomfortable interaction, there is no comfortable distance from the stranger’s behavior or the videographer’s attempts to interpret it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Creep creates fear through awkwardness, uncertainty, and repeated reassessment. The viewer is continually asking whether the client is merely eccentric, deliberately manipulative, or genuinely dangerous. Its limited setting and two-person structure make the danger feel intimate rather than spectacular—a useful distinction for anyone more disturbed by unpredictable people than by supernatural creatures.

8. In the Tall Grass

Label: Supernatural horror
Scare level: Disorienting
Content notes: Child danger, pregnancy-related peril, violence, death

A brother and sister enter a field after hearing a child call for help. Once inside, they discover that the landscape does not behave normally and that finding a way out may be impossible.

Rank #4
Sci-Fi Invasion 10-Movie Collection
  • Sci-Fi Invasion 10-Movie Collection

The field is frightening because it destroys spatial certainty. Characters can hear one another but lose track of where they are; movement and time become unreliable; attempts to solve the problem may lead them back into it. Repetition and disorientation make this more unsettling than a straightforward creature feature. It is a strong pick for viewers who fear being lost, trapped, or unable to trust their surroundings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Run Rabbit Run

Label: Psychological horror
Scare level: Quietly disturbing
Content notes: Grief, family trauma, child distress, possible supernatural events

A fertility doctor’s young daughter begins claiming that she is the sister the mother lost years earlier. The story uses that unsettling claim to reopen family history and challenge the mother’s understanding of what is happening.

This is a psychological horror film before it is a monster movie. Grief, memory, parenthood, and inherited trauma gradually destabilize the family, while the viewer is left to consider whether the threat is supernatural, psychological, or both. Its slower pace and emotional pressure make it particularly effective for viewers who find damaged family relationships more disturbing than visible violence.

6. Veronica

Label: Supernatural horror
Scare level: Frightening
Content notes: Ouija ritual, possession, religious imagery, family danger

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

During a solar eclipse, a teenager and her friends use a Ouija board. The ritual has horrifying consequences, and the story follows the escalating danger that reaches into her family life.

Veronica draws power from adolescent vulnerability, religious imagery, and the fear that a careless attempt to contact the dead has opened a door that cannot be closed. The threat is not restricted to the original participants; family members and the home itself become part of the danger. It is a more traditionally frightening supernatural film than the psychologically ambiguous entries immediately above it.

5. The Deliverance

Label: Supernatural horror
Scare level: Intense
Content notes: Demonic possession, domestic crisis, family distress, religious trauma

A mother moves her family into a home where disturbing events begin threatening both their safety and their stability. The film’s possession story is also a domestic crisis: the family must confront a force that appears to be turning their home and relationships against them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The intensity comes from that combination of supernatural attack and family pressure. Possession is frightening here not only because of the behavior it produces, but because it raises the prospect that a home—normally a place of protection—has become hostile. The suggestion that the story is inspired by real experiences may make the material more unsettling for viewers who respond strongly to supposedly true supernatural accounts.

4. No One Gets Out Alive

Label: Psychological horror
Scare level: Oppressive
Content notes: Immigration anxiety, isolation, exploitation, supernatural violence

This haunted-house film connects supernatural horror to economic and social vulnerability. Its protagonist is isolated and under pressure while living in a place where escape, security, and even being believed are uncertain.

The central fear is entrapment. The supernatural presence becomes increasingly oppressive, but the protagonist is already dealing with circumstances that limit her choices. That makes the haunting feel less like an isolated paranormal puzzle and more like a force exploiting someone who has few safe options. It is heavier and more claustrophobic than a conventional haunted-house ride.

3. His House

Label: Supernatural horror
Scare level: Deeply unsettling
Content notes: Displacement, survivor’s guilt, racism, grief, domestic violence, disturbing imagery

A Sudanese couple seeking asylum in Britain is placed in a deteriorating home where a malevolent presence begins to emerge. The haunting is inseparable from the couple’s displacement, survivor’s guilt, cultural dislocation, and the racism they encounter from people around them.

His House is frightening on several levels at once. The house contains paranormal sights and an oppressive supernatural threat, but the characters are also dealing with memories and consequences that cannot be left behind simply by crossing a border. Its emotional and political weight gives the horror unusual force: the haunting is not an optional layer over the story—it is tied to what the protagonists have survived and what they fear they may have done.

2. The Witch

Label: Folk horror
Scare level: Slow-burn and oppressive
Content notes: Religious paranoia, family fracture, child danger, grief, historical violence

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A family living in isolation near a wilderness becomes consumed by religious fear, suspicion, and the possibility that a supernatural force is present. The film builds its dread through historical atmosphere and the family’s gradual collapse rather than through a steady stream of conventional jump scares.

The Witch is especially powerful for viewers disturbed by ambiguity, strict belief systems, and the breakdown of trust inside a family. The wilderness feels threatening, but so do the people who are trying to explain it. As paranoia intensifies, ordinary disagreements become evidence of evil, and the family’s religious worldview provides both its explanation of the threat and a source of further terror.

This is a slow-burn choice. If you need frequent action or immediate scares, it may feel restrained; if oppressive atmosphere and escalating dread work on you, it can be among the most disturbing films here.

1. Texas Chainsaw Massacre

Label: Survival horror
Scare level: Most visceral

Content notes: Graphic violence, grotesque imagery, pursuit, death, captivity

This contemporary Leatherface story places a group of visitors in a hostile Texas ghost town, where their plans quickly turn into a struggle to survive. The film’s threat is direct and physical: pursuit, confinement, grotesque imagery, and the possibility that help will not arrive.

It takes the top position because its fear is unusually visceral and relentless. Unlike a film that asks you to wait for an ambiguous presence to reveal itself, Texas Chainsaw Massacre keeps the danger close and visible. Its violence is substantially more graphic than what appears near the beginning of this list, so it is not the best first horror movie for newcomers or anyone sensitive to gore and brutal pursuit.

For viewers specifically looking for the most aggressive, physically confronting selection in this group, however, it is the clearest choice.

Which movie should you watch?

Before you press play

  • Check the catalog first. Netflix’s rights change by country and date. Search the title in your U.S. Netflix account rather than relying on an old list.
  • Check the warnings. The most important sensitivities in this ranking include child endangerment and kidnapping, domestic and family abuse, graphic violence, possession, grief, racism, displacement, and religious trauma.
  • Choose by fear type, not just position. A viewer who fears social manipulation may find Creep scarier than a much bloodier slasher. Someone disturbed by ambiguity may respond more strongly to The Witch or Run Rabbit Run.
  • Do not treat the order as universal. The list is designed as a practical least-to-most-scary progression, but individual reactions will vary considerably.

Method note

This ranking is an editorial synthesis of Netflix’s U.S. horror catalog and category placement, Netflix Tudum descriptions and 2025 Halloween recommendations, and independent corroboration of notable Netflix horror selections. It does not claim to measure audience reactions, report a formal score, or represent personal viewing. The titles are ordered by the combination of scare intensity, sustained dread, violence, supernatural threat, psychological pressure, and approachability described above.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre ranks first for its graphic violence, grotesque imagery, pursuit structure, and relentless physical threat. Viewers who prefer atmosphere to gore may find The Witch or His House more disturbing.

The Bottom Line
