Don Thelan’s Buffalo Motor Cars built it in Paramount, California, in the early 1980s. It was also featured on the cover of ZZ Top’s 1983 album Eliminator.
What kind of car is the Eliminator?
It began with a stock 1933 Ford three-window coupe body, but the finished Eliminator is a custom hot rod—not a stock Ford. Its chopped roof, bright red paint and ZZ Top graphics made it instantly recognizable. The car’s name became closely associated with the band’s 1983 album and its visual identity.
The contemporaneous September 1983 Hot Rod feature called it “a dumped-in-the-front, fire red, choppedtop, Chevy-powered ’33 Ford threewindow coupe.” The magazine’s profile is the source for the build specifications below; those details describe the car as reported at the time, not a modern inspection. Read the September 1983 Hot Rod feature.
Who built it, and what inspired its look?
Billy Gibbons commissioned the car from Don Thelan’s Buffalo Motor Cars in Paramount, California. Gibbons said the build took place in the early 1980s. He had initially wanted a duplicate of Pete Chapouris’s “California Kid” film car, but Thelan suggested creating a distinct design instead. Gibbons later described the broader motivation: “We’ve long been faithful followers of hot rods and custom cars and thought it would be great to have one for the road.” Gibbons’s official-site interview and the Hot Rod account discuss the car’s origins and influence.

What were the Eliminator’s documented specifications?
The following details come from the September 1983 Hot Rod profile and should be understood as its account of the build, rather than confirmed present-day specifications.

How did it become part of “Gimme All Your Lovin’”?
The coupe was completed in time to appear on the Eliminator album cover and in the “Gimme All Your Lovin’” video. A retrospective feature by Louder reports that manager Bill Ham commissioned director Tim Newman to make videos for “Gimme All Your Lovin’,” “Sharp Dressed Man” and “Legs,” and places the first video’s shoot at a gas station in Littlerock, California. The red coupe, a golden ZZ keychain, the band members as comic observers and the “Eliminator girls” helped give the campaign its distinctive visual language. Read the Louder retrospective.

In a 2017 interview reproduced on Gibbons’s official site, he said he still owned and drove the coupe, calling it “fully operational.” Separately, a 2016 Louder feature reported that the car was then on exhibit at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland. Those dated reports do not establish where the car is now or whether it is currently on display; check the museum’s current information before planning a visit.
