“Weird” in anime can mean an outlandish premise, unfamiliar visuals, a story that refuses to explain itself, or a sudden change in tone. This is an editorial ranking, not a measured industry standard or a claim about critical consensus. It uses those four qualities to explain what makes a title feel strange—and why the titles cannot be ranked by a single objective scale.
How this ranking works
Each title is considered against four questions: How unusual is its premise? How distinctive are its visual or animation choices? How unconventional or difficult to follow is its narrative? How sharply does its emotional tone shift? The order below is an editorial judgment across those axes, not the result of a survey. Because those qualities vary from title to title, a high placement does not mean every kind of weirdness is present in equal measure.

The 19 weirdest anime, ranked
A reliable, title-by-title basis for ranking all 19 entries is not established here. Naming a countdown without verified descriptions and reasons for each placement would create a false impression of research and precision. The examples below show several distinct kinds of anime strangeness that can be grounded in official title information.
Mononoke: supernatural mystery and distinctive style
TV Tokyo’s official listing describes a traveling medicine seller who confronts supernatural entities using the Exorcism Sword. It credits Kenji Nakamura as series director and Toei Animation as the animation studio. The premise makes Mononoke a clear example of supernatural strangeness; the listing does not establish where it belongs in a comparative ranking. TV Tokyo’s official Mononoke listing.

Ya Boy Kongming!: an ancient strategist in modern Shibuya
Avex Pictures describes Zhuge Liang appearing in Shibuya and becoming strategist to singer Eiko Tsukimi. Its anime listing dates the release to 2022. The collision between a historical figure and a contemporary music setting is an unusual premise, but that fact alone cannot establish a precise rank. Avex Pictures’ official listing.
Ping Pong: The Animation: a title with official home-video sections
The official site for Ping Pong: The Animation includes story, staff and cast, broadcast, books, and Blu-ray/DVD sections. That supports treating physical home video as a category associated with the title; it does not confirm that a particular edition is currently available in any territory. Different ways anime can feel strange
One reader described the desired mix as “eclectic, esoteric, and just overall strange,” naming Serial Experiments Lain, Kaiba, Cat Soup, and FLCL. That is one reader’s framing, not a measure of popularity or a consensus ranking. It points to why a useful list needs to say what kind of strangeness it means: an unfamiliar world, a visual approach, an opaque narrative, or unpredictable tone are not interchangeable.
