“The decade” here means 2010–2019, the last fully completed decade. This is a ranked selection, not a consensus list: the order favors plot construction, character change, thematic depth, and payoff, with cultural staying power as a supporting consideration. It includes series that began in the 2010s and evaluates the story material associated with that period.
How this ranking weighs a storyline
A striking premise is not enough. The strongest entries make their conflicts evolve, give characters consequential choices, and bring their ideas into the plot rather than leaving them as decoration. Payoff matters, too: a mystery should reward attention, and a character’s transformation should feel earned. Animation and direction can deepen a story, but they do not substitute for one.

Some picks are intimate dramas; others are mysteries, sports stories, or speculative adventures. They are ranked against the same broad story-craft criteria, not by genre or popularity alone.
The 15 best anime storylines of the 2010s
15. One-Punch Man (2015)
Saitama can defeat almost any opponent with one punch, which turns the familiar escalation of superhero stories into a joke—and a problem. With no meaningful challenge, victory leaves him bored rather than fulfilled. The premise is a sharp satire of power and spectacle, though its storyline is more episodic than the intricate, cumulative arcs higher on this list.

14. Violet Evergarden (2018)
Violet, a former soldier, takes work writing letters for other people as she tries to understand what emotion and human connection mean. Each assignment gives the series a self-contained encounter, while Violet’s gradual change supplies its longer arc. The structure makes empathy concrete: she learns to recognize feelings by listening to people who struggle to express them.
13. Your Lie in April (2014)
A young pianist who has withdrawn from music is drawn back toward performance through his relationships with other musicians. The story uses music not just as a setting but as a way to dramatize grief, fear, and the difficulty of moving forward. Its emotional force depends on how the characters’ connections reshape the protagonist’s relationship with his talent.
12. JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure (2012)
Rather than follow one hero indefinitely, this adaptation moves across generations of the Joestar family, giving each part a new lead, conflict, and flavor. That structure makes inheritance—of both responsibility and antagonism—the series’ central connective tissue. Its bold shifts in style and supernatural confrontations make for memorable individual arcs, although the changing cast means its overall story is deliberately less unified than a single-protagonist saga.
Rank #2
11. The Monogatari Series (2009–)
Beginning just before the decade, this continuing series follows Koyomi Araragi and people around him as supernatural phenomena become expressions of personal troubles. Its talk-heavy, nonlinear storytelling asks viewers to attend to what characters say, conceal, and revise. The result is unusually interested in perspective and self-deception; the sprawling adaptation is also less straightforward to follow than most entries here.

10. Psycho-Pass (2012)
In a dystopian society, a system measures citizens’ psychological states and helps determine who may pose a threat. The premise turns questions of free will and justice into a practical dilemma: what does public safety mean when a system can label people dangerous before they act? The story’s central strength is that its opposing positions expose the costs of both blind faith in authority and simple rejection of order.
9. Made in Abyss (2017)
Two young explorers descend into a vast, mysterious chasm in search of answers and family. The Abyss is more than a striking setting: each deeper stage expands the world while making exploration feel more dangerous. The contrast between wonder and terror gives the journey its particular force, and the world-building continually changes what the characters—and viewers—understand about the expedition.
Rank #3
8. Hunter × Hunter (2011)
Gon’s search for his absent father begins as an adventure built around the demanding Hunter examination, then branches into conflicts with their own rules and stakes. The shifting arcs let the series change tone without abandoning the choices and bonds that carry across them. Its interest in ambition, power, and the costs of pursuing a goal makes the journey more than a succession of challenges.
7. March Comes in Like a Lion (2016)
Professional shogi player Rei Kiriyama is isolated by grief and depression; the story follows the slow, uneven work of reconnecting with other people. Shogi provides structure, but emotional recovery—not a tournament ladder—is the real narrative movement. The series treats loneliness seriously without making community a cure-all: its warmth comes from repeated acts of care and the possibility of accepting help.
6. The Tatami Galaxy (2010)
A college student looks back on alternate versions of his campus life, each shaped by a different choice and an idealized hope for the perfect youth. Repetition becomes the plot’s engine: familiar people and situations return in altered arrangements, making the protagonist confront how much his dissatisfaction comes from his own outlook. The story’s formal play serves its theme of choice rather than merely showing off.
Rank #4
5. Steins;Gate (2011)
A group of friends experimenting with a way to send messages into the past discover that changing events has consequences they cannot neatly control. The story begins with eccentric experimentation and gradually tightens into a time-travel thriller. Its strongest turn is emotional as well as mechanical: the rules matter because the characters’ loyalties and losses make each attempted correction costly.
4. Vinland Saga (2019)
Set amid Viking conflict, the story begins with Thorfinn’s pursuit of revenge and broadens into a drama of power, violence, and what a life built around vengeance leaves behind. Political maneuvering gives the personal conflict a wider frame, while Thorfinn’s development offers the storyline its long-term question: whether a person shaped by violence can choose a different purpose. The first season establishes that arc; it does not resolve the entire saga.
3. Odd Taxi (2021)
Although it falls outside the 2010s, this 2020s series is a useful comparison for anyone looking beyond the completed-decade scope of the ranking. Its ensemble mystery connects seemingly minor conversations and character details to a larger chain of revelations. The construction rewards attention, and its payoff gives earlier scenes new significance. It is not counted among the fifteen because its release belongs to the next decade.

2. Ping Pong the Animation (2014)
Table tennis is the setting for a compact character study of talent, discipline, friendship, and the different reasons people compete. Rather than treat winning as the only measure of growth, the story follows players whose relationships to the sport change as they confront their own limits. Its focus stays on what competition reveals about its characters, making the matches consequential without reducing the drama to results.
1. Attack on Titan (2013)
Humanity survives behind walls while defending itself from Titans, but the story steadily expands beyond that stark premise. Each new revelation revises the apparent shape of the conflict and challenges assumptions about who is threatened, who holds power, and what freedom might cost. That escalation is matched by character choices that become harder to judge as the world grows more complicated. The anime concluded in 2023, so its full adaptation extends beyond the decade in which it began; its place at number one reflects the long-form storyline, not a claim that every part aired in the 2010s.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to watch next if you mean the 2020s
The 2020s are not complete, so any ranking of that decade is provisional and should include only story material released so far. Strong candidates include Jujutsu Kaisen, with its high-stakes sorcerer conflict and character complexity; Chainsaw Man, whose protagonist longs for an ordinary life and connection; Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End, a reflective journey about time and meaning; and The Apothecary Diaries, which combines palace mysteries with politics and social questions. Odd Taxi stands out for the way its mystery connects character details to its revelations and ending.
These are a separate set of contemporary candidates, not additions to the 2010s ranking. The decade still has years to run, and ongoing stories may develop in ways that alter their eventual standing.
