There is no single objective list of the best metal albums of 2023: staff rankings, reader polls and individual critics’ picks reflect different tastes and rules. This guide brings together 11 recommendations across distinct corners of metal, with enough context to help you choose what to hear first. The sequence is a listening guide, not a definitive ranking.

How to use this list

Metal’s range is part of the point. These records move from progressive death metal and dissonant black metal to vintage hard rock, power metal and death-metal-inflected hardcore, so consider style and intensity before treating the albums as interchangeable.

The selections draw on year-end coverage by Bandcamp Daily and Decibel, alongside Metal Hammer’s reader poll. Those are different kinds of judgment: Decibel describes its Top 40 as reflecting the diverse tastes of nearly three dozen staff members and acknowledges that some readers’ favorites will be missing (Decibel’s 2023 list). Metal Hammer’s list came from thousands of reader votes, with well over 100 albums in contention; it is separate from the magazine’s critic poll (Metal Hammer’s readers’ poll). Neither format makes a universal verdict.

11 metal albums from 2023 to hear

1. Tomb Mold — The Enduring Spirit

A strong first stop for listeners who like death metal with room to roam. Bandcamp Daily describes Tomb Mold’s progressive, melodic approach as an expansion of the band’s technical style, with a more openhearted feel and inventive guitar solos across the songs. The record also has unusual overlap between these sources: Decibel placed it at No. 2 in its 2023 staff list. Bandcamp Daily identifies vinyl LP, CD and cassette editions; check the seller for current availability and exact edition details.

2. Horrendous — Ontological Mysterium

Decibel ranked this album No. 1 in its 2023 Top 40. That makes it a clear staff-list recommendation; the sources used here do not support a more detailed sonic description.

3. Wayfarer — American Gothic

Another Decibel staff-list selection, ranked No. 3. Its place here reflects that year-end recognition rather than a claim that every listener will prefer it to the other records.

4. Lamp of Murmuur — Saturnian Bloodstorm

For black metal with a grand, classic-metal sweep, Bandcamp Daily points to guideposts including Immortal and Satyricon, while noting the record’s Iron Maiden- and Dio-like ambition. Decibel ranked it No. 7.

5. Thantifaxath — Hive Mind Narcosis

Choose this for a more challenging, avant-garde direction. Bandcamp Daily describes dissonance, shifting structures, synth and feedback; Decibel ranked the album No. 9.

6. Green Lung — This Heathen Land

A vintage hard-rock and heavy-metal option built around occult folklore themes. Bandcamp Daily hears a sound that draws on Rainbow and Queen as much as doom, making this a useful change of texture beside the harsher picks.

7. Crypta — Shades of Sorrow

This Brazilian metal release broadens the list’s geographic range. Bandcamp Daily included it among its year-end selections; the source basis here does not establish a more precise subgenre label.

8. The Mosaic Window — Plight of Acceptance

A melodic black-metal record with seven songs and a 37-minute runtime, as described by Bandcamp Daily. The feature also notes its robust mix and master by Damian Herring and a stylistic range that gives the album more than one shade of melodic black metal.

9. Sacred Outcry — Towers of Gold

Power metal for listeners who enjoy a story as well as a big-scale sound: Bandcamp Daily describes a seafaring concept narrative and points to Blind Guardian, Warlord and Helloween as reference points.

10. Saturnus — The Storm Within

This death/doom release leans on mournful vocals and atmospheric guitar work. Bandcamp Daily notes the addition of two guitarists and a duet on “Even Tide” with Paul Kuhr of Novembers Doom.

11. Year of the Knife — No Love Lost

A compact, mosh-ready choice for hardcore listeners drawn toward death metal. Bandcamp Daily describes it as a 20-minute record and notes the band’s movement in that direction.

What year-end rankings can—and cannot—tell you

Decibel’s positions offer a specific staff-list perspective: Horrendous was No. 1, Tomb Mold No. 2, Wayfarer No. 3, Panopticon’s The Rime of Memory No. 6, Lamp of Murmuur No. 7 and Thantifaxath No. 9. These are editorial rankings, not measurements of quality. Metal Hammer’s reader poll represents a different group of listeners and selection process. Neither source supplies a common review score or comparable sales or streaming figures for these albums, so there is no meaningful shared numerical yardstick here.

Bandcamp Daily contributor Brad Sanders framed his own feature as “The 12 albums below will take you on a dozen dizzying journeys beyond the flesh, to destinations I found myself visiting again and again in 2023.” That is Sanders’s description of his feature, not the count or promise of this 11-album guide.
