But no ranking can prove that a movie will terrify everyone: the project measured physiological responses in a 250-person panel watching a curated selection of English-language horror films. Use the list as a grounded starting point, then choose by the kind of fear you want—sharp jump scares, creeping dread, or psychological unease.
What makes a movie “scary”?
The 2026 Science of Scare project, described by MoneySuperMarket’s Alan Cairns as an annual experiment, screened selected English-language horror films to a panel of 250 people. It tracked heart rate and heart rate variability (HRV), then combined average heart-rate increase, HRV drop, and peak heart rate into a score out of 100. The project says this approach is intended to capture both sudden scares and slower stress.
That is one way to compare films, not a universal verdict. The results reflect this panel and this curated selection—not every viewer, every horror movie, or every way people experience fear. The project labels its 2026 scores provisional; it also says it adjusted for the panel’s higher average resting heart rate of 67 BPM, compared with 64 BPM in earlier panels.
Horror can work through different routes: a sudden shock, sustained suspense, supernatural threat, or psychological tension. In a separate 2015 YouGov survey of U.S. respondents who had seen the films, 88% said The Exorcist was scary and 51% called it very scary. The same survey found 53% of American moviegoers cited psychological thrills as scary and 52% cited tension, compared with 26% who cited monsters. Those are historical survey results, not a current or timeless measure of audience taste.

The 10 scariest movies in the 2026 ranking
The films below follow the published Science of Scare order. At tenth place, Talk to Me and Hell House LLC are tied; this ten-film selection includes Talk to Me.
-
Sinister (2012) — 96/100, rank 1
The project’s leader combines a sharp physiological response with signs of sustained stress: its panel results show an average heart-rate increase from 64 BPM to 86 BPM, a 131 BPM peak, and a 21% HRV drop. Those figures describe the project’s panel, not what an individual viewer should expect. For a viewer choosing by ranking, it is the clearest first pick.
-
Host — 95/100, rank 2
Just one point behind Sinister, Host produced the highest average heart rate in the project’s list: 88 BPM. Its position makes it a strong choice for viewers drawn to high-intensity scares, though the ranking alone cannot say how frightening it will feel to you.
-
Skinamarink — 91/100, rank 3
This experimental film offers a very different kind of horror from a conventional scare-driven narrative. The project reports a 22% HRV fall, tied for the largest recorded drop, and describes the film as having no traditional narrative. Choose it for an unusual, slow-burn experience rather than a straightforward sequence of shocks.

-
Insidious — 90/100, rank 4
Insidious is the next-highest title in the list, at 90. Its score places it among the leading picks for viewers seeking supernatural horror and sudden scares.
-
The Conjuring — 88/100, rank 5
With a score of 88, The Conjuring sits just below Insidious in the 2026 results. It is another supernatural selection for a list built around films that prompted strong measured responses in the panel.

Hereditary — 81/100, rank 6
Hereditary scores 81. It provides an option for viewers more interested in psychological unease and tension than in treating horror as a contest of jump-scare peaks.
-
Smile 2 — 79/100, rank 7
The 2026 project gives Smile 2 a score of 79, two points above the first Smile. The result makes it the higher-ranked of the pair in this panel-based comparison.

Smile — 78/100, rank 8
The original Smile follows closely at 78. Its near-equal score to the sequel is a reminder that a one-point gap in this ranking is a small difference in the project’s results, not a guarantee that viewers will find one scarier.
-
The Exorcism of Emily Rose — 76/100, rank 9
At 76, this film rounds out the top nine. It also connects to a longer history of horror audiences: in YouGov’s 2015 U.S. survey, The Exorcist—a different film—was found scary by 88% of respondents who had seen it. That historical response should not be mistaken for a result about The Exorcism of Emily Rose.
-
Talk to Me — 75/100, tied rank 10
Talk to Me shares the tenth-place score of 75 with Hell House LLC. It earns the final slot here by selection, not because the project ranked it above the tied film.
How to pick the right kind of horror
- For a high-intensity jolt: Start with the top-ranked titles, especially Sinister or Host; the project’s measures include peak heart rate as well as average response.
- For sustained unease: Consider Skinamarink or Hereditary. The project’s inclusion of HRV is meant to account for slower stress as well as momentary peaks.
- For supernatural horror: The list includes Insidious, The Conjuring, and The Exorcism of Emily Rose.
- For an unconventional presentation: Skinamarink is the project’s explicitly experimental pick and does not follow a traditional narrative structure.
