Thor is the strongest candidate at the top of this editorial ranking, with Silver Surfer close behind—but Marvel has never published an official power scale for Galactus’s Heralds. Their abilities depend on who they are, how Galactus empowered them, and which version or moment in their stories is being compared. This list weighs demonstrated feats, unusual power sources and transformations, duration of service, and narrative role; it is a reasoned comparison, not a definitive answer to every hypothetical fight.
How to read this ranking
Galactus appoints Heralds to find planets, granting each some measure of cosmic power. That does not make their abilities identical: a Herald may bring exceptional powers of their own, receive a distinctive form of energy, or serve only briefly. Marvel’s official roster and story summaries describe characters and outcomes, but do not provide an exhaustive comparative scale or issue-by-issue feats table. The order below is therefore editorial, and close placements should not be mistaken for a settled matchup result.
The list emphasizes established or distinctive Heralds, with Thor included for his unusual appointment during the Black Winter story. It is not a claim to rank every temporary, alternate-future, or unusual appointment. Marvel’s roster also includes figures such as Human Torch, Richard Rider as Nova, Doctor Strange, Cosmic Ghost Rider from a possible future, and Mike of Broxton (the Praeter), a brief replacement.
The 10 most powerful Heralds of Galactus
-
Thor
Thor takes the top spot because his Herald appointment combined Galactus’s power with an already formidable Asgardian identity. During the Black Winter storyline, Galactus chose him as a Herald, and Marvel’s summary says Thor helped harvest energy from multiple worlds in preparation for the threat. That makes him an exceptional high-end case, not proof that every Herald—or Thor in every circumstance—outranks the rest. Marvel does not directly compare this version of Thor with every other Herald.

Silver Surfer (Norrin Radd)
Norrin Radd is the defining benchmark: he offered himself to Galactus to spare his homeworld, Zenn-La, and was transformed by the Power Cosmic. His long-running central role and substantial record make him a credible near-top choice, though longevity and prominence are not the same thing as a demonstrated victory over every rival. Marvel identifies Fantastic Four (1961) #48 as the first appearance of both Galactus and Silver Surfer. Marvel’s Silver Surfer and Galactus reading list is a starting point for that story.
-
Fallen One
Marvel identifies the Fallen One as Galactus’s first known Herald, with a distinction that makes simple comparisons difficult: Galactus fueled him with Dark Energy rather than the Power Cosmic. Marvel’s account says he reveled in destruction, was imprisoned, escaped, and attempted to kill Galactus. That gives him a strikingly dangerous role and a distinct power source, but the official summary offers limited detail for comparing his combat strength precisely with the other entries.

-
Morg
Morg’s strongest case is unusually concrete combat evidence. In Marvel’s account of his conflict with other Heralds, he killed Nova and inflicted catastrophic mechanical injuries on Air-Walker. Those are serious outcomes against fellow Heralds and support a high placement. They do not, by themselves, settle how Morg would fare against every other Herald in a different encounter.
-
Stardust (Lambda-Zero)
Stardust served Galactus during the Annihilation period and survived an apparent sacrifice alongside Red Shift. Marvel describes Stardust continuing to serve Galactus, later joined by Silver Surfer. That endurance and sustained role make Stardust a credible upper-tier candidate, but the available official summary does not establish a direct, decisive comparison with the Heralds above.

-
Terrax (Tyros)
Galactus empowered Tyros and gave him control over earth and rock, a forceful and distinctive ability set. Terrax repeatedly sought to escape his service, and later regained powers after Galactus stripped them. His destructive potential and weapon support this placement, although Marvel’s summary focuses more on his rebellion and story outcomes than on a comparative power scale.
-
Firelord (Pyreus Kril)
Firelord received the Power Cosmic after pursuing his missing commander, Gabriel Lan. His long service, loyalty, and combat experience make him one of the more substantial established Heralds. Marvel’s account also says he earned his freedom and later returned to help against threats to Galactus. The case for ranking him here rests more on an extensive role and experience than on a specific feat that conclusively puts him above the next entries.

-
Nova (Frankie Raye)
After Terrax, Galactus made Frankie Raye a Herald. She knowingly guided him to inhabited worlds, including the Skrull homeworld Tarnax IV, and later became conflicted about the consequences. Her place among the ten reflects her appointment and importance in the Herald story; Marvel’s summary does not supply a precise comparative power tier for her.
-
Air-Walker (Gabriel Lan)
Air-Walker requires a version distinction. Gabriel Lan originally served Galactus loyally; after Lan was near death, Galactus recreated him in android form. Marvel’s account says the robotic version was eventually severely damaged by Morg. The entry refers to Air-Walker as a Herald across those versions, rather than treating the original and android as identical in durability or capability.

-
Red Shift
Red Shift served in a later era and was associated with Galactus’s destructive return to Earth and the Annihilation conflict. Marvel says Red Shift and Stardust helped resist the Annihilation Wave and apparently died buying time for an evacuation, while Stardust survived. Red Shift rounds out this list because of that role and sacrifice, but the official summary provides comparatively little evidence for measuring his strength against the others.
Why Herald power is difficult to rank
- Power source: Heralds may wield the Power Cosmic, a different force such as the Fallen One’s Dark Energy, or power rooted in an identity that predates the appointment.
- Degree of empowerment: Receiving power from Galactus does not establish that every recipient gets the same amount or abilities.
- Version and duration: A temporary appointment, an original person, and a later transformed or android version are not automatically interchangeable.
- Feats versus inference: A described outcome—such as Morg killing Nova—is firmer evidence than a ranking inferred from fame, status, or a broad story role.
- Circumstances: Opponents, objectives, and the specific point in a character’s story can change the result of a fight.
Where to start with Galactus and his Heralds
For the foundational pairing, begin with Fantastic Four (1961) #48, the issue Marvel identifies as the first appearance of Galactus and Silver Surfer. For Norrin Radd’s origin, Marvel’s official Silver Surfer guide, published August 24, 2023, explains his agreement with Galactus to save Zenn-La. Marvel’s Heralds of Galactus reading list also names issues connected to the wider roster and its stories.
