There is no verified, definitive ranking of the most outrageous promposals ever. These ten documented examples stand out for their spectacle, planning, personalization, publicity, or consequences—from an unexpected diaper reveal to graffiti on an Idaho cliff. The list is an editorial selection, not a claim that these are the ten biggest stunts ever attempted.
What makes a promposal outrageous?
A promposal is an elaborate way to ask someone to attend prom. “Outrageous” can mean a big public production, an unusual reveal, a carefully personalized gesture, or a stunt that crosses a line. The examples below are grouped as a countdown for readability, not ranked by an objective measure.
Promposals predate social media. The Washington Post’s 2014 history could not identify the first-ever example, but reported that the earliest newspaper story it found using the word appeared in the Dallas Morning News in 2001. Loudspeaker announcements and rewritten song lyrics were among the early forms; rose-petal trails, signs, and public stunts followed. Social platforms helped make the asks more visible. The Post reported that Sq1 counted 20,000 prom videos uploaded during one month of the 2011 prom season, and in 2014 it cited more than 40,000 videos tagged “promposal” and 900,000 tagged “prom proposal” or “ask cute.” Those are historical counts, not current totals. The Washington Post’s history of the promposal traces that change.
10 documented promposals that went big
1. The diaper reveal
Inside Edition reported that students staged a mock rescue, wheeling a friend around as if he needed help. When the apparent victim was lifted onto a table, Nolan Molt emerged from beneath a blanket wearing a diaper and holding a sign: “I Was Born to Go to Prom With You.” Molt said his intended date knew he was going to ask, but not how. She said yes. The stunt’s surprise depended on a coordinated group and a deliberately absurd reveal. Inside Edition’s report covers the scene.

2. An enchanted woodland after dark
Fayetteville, Georgia student Aiden Gallagher decorated trees in a wooded area with lights, then switched them on at night to reveal the setting. “I want to make something crazy that she could remember the rest of her life,” he told Inside Edition. The report says his date cried with joy and accepted. Among these examples, this one gets its impact from the setting and timed reveal rather than a large audience.
3. “PROM?” spelled with umbrellas
John Baik and classmates performed a song-and-dance routine on the steps of North Torrance High School, opening umbrellas to spell “PROM?” His date said yes, according to Inside Edition. The idea turned the ask into a group performance, with classmates serving as both collaborators and the visual effect.

4. A curtain-call ticket for a Sound of Music star
Capell Miller made an oversized theater ticket for McKenna Michel, his girlfriend and a star in the school production of The Sound of Music. He appeared with flowers during the final curtain call and delivered the line, “Move over, Von Trapp, there’s a new captain.” Michel said yes. ABC News reported that Miller spent about $30 and that Michel valued the thought behind it. The gesture was theatrical, but tailored to her role and the show—not simply made larger for its own sake. ABC News’s report describes the ask and its cost.
5. “Destiny, Prom?” painted on an Idaho cliff
In May 2015, TIME reported that authorities were looking for whoever spray-painted “Destiny, Prom?” on the Black Cliffs east of Boise. Citing the Ada County Sheriff’s Office, the report described the act as illegal and said the potential misdemeanor penalty at the time was up to a $1,000 fine and six months in jail. That is a description of the 2015 report, not current legal advice. The cliff made the message conspicuous, but the property damage also made this the clearest example of a promposal with real-world consequences. TIME’s report on the graffiti incident explains the case.

6. A 3 a.m. alarm-clock invitation
The Washington Post recounts an Idaho student sneaking an alarm clock into his girlfriend’s room. It rang at 3 a.m. and displayed a prom invitation; she accepted. Unlike a stage performance, this ask was intimate and startling—but its timing meant the surprise came at the cost of waking someone in the middle of the night. The anecdote appears in the Post’s 2014 account.
7. A rose-petal route from home to school
The Washington Post also describes Arizona students leaving trails of rose petals from their dates’ homes to school. The gesture stretched the invitation across a route rather than concentrating it in one sign or scene. The account does not specify a cost or give further logistics, so the scale is best understood as a distinctive, place-based idea rather than a documented budget record.

8. Tow trucks and gorilla suits
The Post points to a 2005 episode of Laguna Beach in which young men used tow trucks and gorilla suits to woo their friends. Teens later cited the episode as inspiration for elaborate asks. It is a striking early example of promposal spectacle being performed for an audience and then influencing what other students imagined they could do. The Post’s history recounts the television connection.
9. Asking a celebrity or public figure
In its 2014 history, the Washington Post described students asking celebrities and other public figures to prom. Its examples included a Minnesota student who persuaded adult film star Megan Piper to attend and a Texas student whose tweet to a Houston Texans cheerleader was shared 10,000 times. These are examples reported by the Post in 2014; they do not establish how often such invitations succeeded. The public audience—and the uncertainty of asking someone outside the student’s own circle—made the gesture unusual.

10. A visual grab bag: knight, Hedwig, nuggets, and more
TIME’s 2014 visual roundup included a knight and horse, a Frozen reference, a Hedwig delivery, a history-themed ask, chicken nuggets arranged on a car, and a dirty truck. The accessible article identifies these concepts but does not supply enough detail to reconstruct each scene, so they are best treated as a snapshot of the range of ideas rather than six fully documented stories. Promposals can become a performance when an audience, school setting, or social-media response is part of the plan. Relationship expert Logan Levkoff told ABC News that teens may want to make an elaborate first romantic gesture; she added that social media’s likes and clicks had “definitely upped the ante for a lot of people.” That pressure does not make expense a reliable measure of care.
ABC News reported in 2016 that Visa put the average promposal cost at more than $300. The same article said prom spending could exceed $1,000 per couple when dress, flowers, limousine, and tickets were included. These are historical figures reported in 2016, not current cost estimates. Miller’s roughly $30 theater-ticket ask shows a different route: a handmade prop linked to what the recipient was doing, rather than a large budget.
- Spectacle: How many people, props, or moving parts does the idea need?
- Personalization: Does it connect to the person being asked, as Miller’s theater ticket did?
- Planning: Does it require classmates, a timed reveal, or a special location?
- Publicity: Is the intended audience one person, a school, or a much wider online crowd?
- Consequences: Could it disrupt school, create a safety risk, or damage property?
A poster board and markers can be enough for a handmade sign or oversized ticket; a woodland light display is an option, not a requirement. The strongest ideas in this collection are memorable for different reasons, and none needs to be copied literally. In particular, damage to property or a surprise that disregards someone’s comfort is not a good trade for spectacle.
