Spoiler warning: This ranking covers deaths across the complete Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba manga, including its ending. The canon establishes who dies; “most heartbreaking” is a judgment about narrative impact, personal bonds, sacrifice, and the losses’ effects on survivors—not an official ranking.

How this ranking weighs each death

The list focuses on human allies and supporting characters whose deaths carry major emotional or story consequences. It weighs relationship stakes, sacrifice or final choice, and the effect on those left behind. It is not a list of the most powerful characters or an objective measure of sadness. Manga volume and chapter references below follow a full-series death guide; consult the cited chapters for the scenes themselves.

The 10 most heartbreaking deaths in Demon Slayer

  1. Kyojuro Rengoku — Volume 8, Chapter 66

Rengoku’s death is the defining loss of the Mugen Train mission: the Flame Hashira is killed while battling an Upper Rank demon. His death lands with particular force because it comes after a direct confrontation in which the stakes for the passengers and the young Demon Slayers are immediate. The official anime character page likewise describes him taking on the Mugen Train mission with Tanjiro and the others, then dying in battle against an Upper Rank demon: Kyojuro Rengoku’s official character page.

  2. Genya Shinazugawa — Volume 21, Chapter 179

Genya’s death is recorded in the same chapter as Muichiro’s, placing two losses in a tightly concentrated stretch of the story. Genya’s place in the ranking reflects the emotional weight of his family ties and the consequences of his loss for surviving characters. The death reference establishes the chapter, but the scene and its details should be read in the manga rather than inferred from a chapter listing.

  3. Muichiro Tokito — Volume 21, Chapter 179

Muichiro dies in the same chapter as Genya. The paired timing makes the losses feel especially severe: the reader encounters multiple deaths during the same battle sequence, rather than having one grief fully settle before another begins. His position here recognizes both the personal loss and the impact of losing a Hashira in the final conflict.

  4. Shinobu Kocho — Volume 17, Chapter 143

Shinobu’s death is documented in volume 17, chapter 143. Her loss carries added personal stakes because she is the Insect Hashira and Kanae Kocho’s sister. The official Japanese portal identifies Shinobu’s role, while the chapter reference establishes where her death occurs; those facts support the context without treating a chapter number as a substitute for the scene’s full emotional meaning.

  5. Mitsuri Kanroji — Volume 23, Chapter 200

Mitsuri’s death comes in the final battle, in the same chapter that records the deaths of Obanai and Gyomei. Her loss is part of a devastating cluster at the story’s end, when the cost of the conflict is made unmistakable. The volume-and-chapter reference establishes the event, but the ranking of its emotional impact remains a reader-facing judgment.

  6. Obanai Iguro — Volume 23, Chapter 200

Obanai’s death is recorded alongside Mitsuri’s in chapter 200. Their shared place in the final battle gives his loss an intimate dimension as well as a larger one: it belongs to the same closing sequence that takes several Hashira from the Corps. That combination of personal stakes and collective cost makes the death difficult to separate from Mitsuri’s, even though each is ranked individually here.

  7. Gyomei Himejima — Volume 23, Chapter 200

Gyomei’s death is also recorded in volume 23, chapter 200. As another Hashira lost in the final battle, his death deepens the sense that victory has demanded an extraordinary price from the Corps. His placement reflects the scale of that loss in the closing conflict, rather than any claim that it is inherently more or less tragic than the other deaths in the chapter.

  8. Kagaya Ubuyashiki — Volume 16, Chapter 138

Kagaya’s death is recorded in volume 16, chapter 138. His importance to the Corps makes the loss consequential beyond one battle: it marks a turning point for the organization facing Muzan. The ranking gives that broad narrative consequence substantial weight, alongside the individual grief attached to his death.

  9. Tamayo — Volume 21, Chapter 180

Tamayo’s death is listed in volume 21, chapter 180, during the final conflict. Her place among the ten recognizes the importance of her role in the struggle against Muzan and the high personal cost of opposing him. The chapter reference confirms the location in the manga; it does not, by itself, measure the sacrifice or its consequences.

  10. Kanae Kocho — backstory death

Kanae is included because a full-series ranking can account for deaths that happened before the main present-day plot. Her death matters to the story’s family context, especially given Shinobu’s relationship to her. The death guide used for volume and chapter locations does not provide a chapter reference for Kanae, so this entry avoids assigning one or describing unverified scene details. Readers who prefer a ranking limited to deaths shown in the present-day storyline can treat her as outside that scope.

Where to verify the manga references

The chapter locations above come from a secondary full-series death guide that records deaths by volume and chapter. It places Rengoku in volume 8, chapter 66; Shinobu in volume 17, chapter 143; Genya and Muichiro in volume 21, chapter 179; and Mitsuri, Obanai, and Gyomei in volume 23, chapter 200. It also lists Kagaya in volume 16, chapter 138, and Tamayo in volume 21, chapter 180. See the Demon Slayer character death guide for the complete reference. These pointers locate events; the manga chapters are the primary source for what happens and how each scene unfolds.

Who dies in Demon Slayer, and what makes a death heartbreaking?

The full series includes deaths among both human characters and demons. This ranking narrows the field to human allies and supporting characters, so it does not rank antagonist deaths. “Who dies?” has a factual answer in the manga; “which death is saddest?” depends on how a reader weighs relationships, sacrifice, timing, and the aftermath for survivors. The official Japanese portal identifies Tanjiro and Nezuko as siblings, Giyu as the Water Hashira, and Shinobu as the Insect Hashira, providing useful context for the bonds and roles that shape those stakes: official Demon Slayer character portal.
