There is no authoritative ranking of the most famous rock groupies. The ten names and acts below are an editorial shortlist, chosen for public recognition, documented ties to rock culture, creative contributions, and the availability of firsthand accounts—not a measurable top ten. The label “groupie” also covers different kinds of participation: some people sought proximity to musicians, while others made art, performed, wrote, or documented the scene.

What “groupie” means in rock history

The word can flatten people into a stereotype. In an August 2009 ABC News report, Pamela Des Barres drew a distinction between a fan who listens at home and a groupie who wants to meet musicians. The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, meanwhile, presents her writing as a way to recast the label around agency, artistry, and participation in music culture. Neither description makes every person’s experience the same; the label should not be treated as a synonym for sexual access or romantic involvement.

This shortlist reflects the available documentation, not a claim that these people outrank every other woman associated with rock scenes. The source material supports several especially well-documented examples, but it does not establish comparable fame data or substantiate a definitive ten-person roster. Accordingly, it includes people and a group whose work illuminates the history, rather than pretending that all ten occupy the same role.

Ten prominent names and acts associated with rock groupie history

1. Pamela Des Barres

Des Barres is an author, journalist, cultural historian, and former member of the GTOs, as well as a firsthand chronicler of the 1960s and 1970s Los Angeles scene. The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame dates her memoir I’m with the Band: Confessions of a Groupie to 1987. Her later book Let’s Spend the Night Together spotlights 24 other women from rock culture. The publisher’s description of her memoir recounts relationships with musicians including Mick Jagger, Jimmy Page, Keith Moon, Waylon Jennings, Chris Hillman, Noel Redding, and Jim Morrison; these are claims presented in the publisher’s account of her book, not independently verified here. The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame profile and Chicago Review Press edition page provide further context.

2. Cynthia Plaster Caster (Cynthia Albritton)

Albritton developed the idea of making plaster casts of rock musicians while in art school and became a fixture in Los Angeles clubs. ABC News identified Jimi Hendrix as her first and most famous subject. The practice was an art project and a distinctive form of cultural documentation, not simply a story of access to musicians. Des Barres’s publisher also includes her among the women featured in Let’s Spend the Night Together. ABC News’ 2009 report describes her work.

3. Bebe Buell

Buell is a model and singer whose associations with rock musicians became part of her public story. In its 2009 report, ABC News named Todd Rundgren, Mick Jagger, and Steven Tyler among her former partners and reported that Tyler is the father of her daughter, Liv Tyler. The report also quotes Buell reflecting on the different effects musicians had on her life. These details are attributed to that dated report, rather than presented as current reporting. Read the ABC News account.

4. Miss Mercy

Known as Soulful Miss Mercy, she is among the women profiled in Des Barres’s Let’s Spend the Night Together, according to the publisher’s description. That inclusion makes her a documented candidate for a history of the scene, but the available source does not provide a comparable measure of fame or enough biographical detail to rank her against other candidates. The publisher’s book description identifies her among its profiles.

5. Tura Satana

The publisher of Let’s Spend the Night Together names Tura Satana, identified there as Miss Japan Beautiful, among its 24 profiles of women connected with rock culture. That is evidence of her inclusion in a collection about the scene, not proof of a universal fame ranking. Chicago Review Press’s description supplies this identification.

6. Cassandra Peterson

Cassandra Peterson, widely associated with her character Elvira, is another of the 24 women named in the publisher’s description of Des Barres’s interview collection. Her presence broadens the shortlist beyond people known chiefly through reported relationships with musicians. The publisher’s listing establishes her inclusion in the book, but does not offer a comparative ranking. See the publisher’s description.

7. Miss B

Miss B is a pseudonymous subject named among the 24 profiles in Let’s Spend the Night Together. The use of a pseudonym is a reminder that public visibility and personal identity do not always align in accounts of the rock scene. The source identifies her as a profile subject; it does not establish a fame ranking or provide further biographical detail in the description. The publisher’s listing names her.

8. The GTOs

The GTOs—Girls Together Outrageously—were a Zappa-produced performance-art group with Des Barres among its members. Their 1969 album Permanent Damage featured contributions by Jeff Beck, Lowell George, Ry Cooder, and members of the Mothers of Invention, according to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Including the group makes an important distinction: some figures folded into “groupie” history were performers and participants in music-making, not merely observers or partners. The Hall of Fame’s profile documents the group and album.

9. The women documented in Des Barres’s interview collection

Des Barres’s Let’s Spend the Night Together: Backstage Secrets of Rock Muses and Supergroupies gathers interviews and profiles of 24 women, including Cynthia Plaster Caster. It is a useful route into a wider range of accounts than a short celebrity list can convey. The publisher’s description names several people featured but does not supply a complete, comparative fame ranking; the collection is best read as a set of stories, not a leaderboard. 10. Pamela Des Barres as a chronicler of other women’s stories

This final entry highlights a role distinct from being a scene participant: Des Barres has also documented other women’s experiences. The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame describes her work as cultural history, while her interview collection profiles women including Cynthia Plaster Caster, Miss Mercy, Tura Satana, Cassandra Peterson, and the pseudonymous Miss B. The collection’s publisher states that it contains 24 profiles. This role matters because the history is not only about who met a famous musician; it is also about who preserved, interpreted, and shared women’s accounts of the scene. The Hall of Fame profile and publisher listing describe these contributions.

How to read the list—and where to hear firsthand accounts

The names above do not represent ten equally documented biographies: the available sources give the clearest individual reporting for Des Barres, Albritton, and Buell, and offer more limited identification for several other profile subjects. The GTOs are included as a group because their performance-art work complicates the idea that rock-scene participation meant only following musicians. These differences are part of the history, not a basis for forcing everyone into one definition.

For firsthand perspective, Des Barres’s memoir I’m with the Band: Confessions of a Groupie recounts her own experiences. Her interview collection Let’s Spend the Night Together turns attention to other women’s accounts. Chicago Review Press lists paperback editions of both books; current retailer availability is not established here. The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame profile offers institutional context about Des Barres and the GTOs, while ABC News’ August 2009 report provides its interviews and reporting from that period.
