Only a small slice of films commonly called “family movies” has also been nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture. This ranked selection uses that specific Oscar category as its eligibility test, then weighs storytelling and craft, appeal across generations, cultural staying power, and how well each film may work for different ages. The order is an editorial judgment—not an Academy ranking—and “family viewing” depends on a household’s standards and a child’s age and sensitivities.
The Academy’s database says its records are complete through the 2025 (98th) Academy Awards, presented March 15, 2026. A nomination for Animated Feature alone does not qualify a film here; each title below must have a Best Picture nomination. Check the Academy Awards Database for its awards record.
How this ranking works
Eligibility is narrow: every film below was nominated for Best Picture. The ranking considers the quality of the storytelling and filmmaking, whether the film can engage viewers across generations, its cultural or historical significance, and likely age or sensitivity concerns. The Academy determines nominations; it does not rank these films as family viewing.
Ratings and content descriptions can help parents assess a title, but they are not universal suitability verdicts. The Motion Picture Association says ratings indicate a film’s level of content to help parents decide, while the ultimate choice belongs to each family. The list does not replace checking the rating and content information for the specific film and edition you plan to watch. See the MPA’s Ratings Guide and Resources & FAQ.

Toy Story 3 (2010)
Few family films balance a satisfying story for children with such a resonant farewell for adults. The film’s humor, visual inventiveness and emotional stakes make its toy-sized world feel unexpectedly expansive. Its Best Picture nomination is confirmed in the Academy’s record of the 83rd Academy Awards, which honored films released in 2010; it also won Animated Feature. The Academy’s 83rd Awards record lists both.
Its themes of growing up, change and letting go can land differently depending on a child’s age and temperament. CBS described it as G-rated in 2011, but that is dated secondary reporting, not a current rating lookup. Use the rating and content information available for the version you intend to watch.
-
Beauty and the Beast (1991)
This animated musical combines memorable songs, visual craft and a story that has remained familiar to audiences across generations. Its Best Picture nomination was historically significant for an animated feature, while the film’s character-driven romance and conflict give it more than nostalgic appeal. The Academy records five nominations and two wins at the 64th Academy Awards. See the Academy’s 1992 ceremony record.
The enchanted household and musical set pieces make it an inviting shared watch for many families, though the peril and frightening moments may be intense for some younger viewers.

Up (2009)
Up turns an unlikely adventure into a story about grief, companionship and finding purpose again. Its bold opening, expressive animation and comic momentum give adults and children different ways into the same film. The Academy records it as both a Best Picture nominee and an Animated Feature winner; the Academy’s statistics for animation and other categories document the crossover.
The film includes loss, peril and moments of menace, so its broad appeal should not be mistaken for a promise that every scene will suit every child.
-
E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982)
Steven Spielberg’s story of a child befriending an alien remains a defining family adventure because its spectacle grows out of a recognizably intimate story: loneliness, sibling bonds and the wish to protect someone vulnerable. Its emotional sincerity and practical sense of wonder give it enduring appeal beyond its era.
Its tension and frightening sequences can be a concern for sensitive or younger children. Check the current rating and content details before choosing it for a family movie night.

The Wizard of Oz (1939)
A girl, a road to follow and a collection of unforgettable companions make this fantasy a natural multigenerational watch. Its songs, production design and influence on popular culture help explain why it continues to be discovered by new audiences. The mixture of wonder and vulnerability gives the adventure emotional weight, not just spectacle.
Some scenes and characters—especially the witch and flying monkeys—may frighten young viewers. Consider a child’s sensitivity to suspense and peril.
-
Mary Poppins (1964)
Mary Poppins pairs live-action performances with musical fantasy, using a family’s changing relationships as the anchor for its imaginative set pieces. Its songs and playful craft offer plenty for younger viewers, while its themes of attention, work and family connection give adults another perspective.
The film’s pace and dated social conventions may be less engaging for some contemporary children. Families differ on how much context or conversation they want to bring to older films.

Jaws (1975)
Jaws is a suspense thriller rather than a conventional children’s movie, but it can be a strong shared viewing choice for families with older children who enjoy tension. Its suspenseful construction, memorable score and clear character conflict made it a landmark popular film. Its inclusion reflects the broad meaning of family viewing—not a claim that it suits all ages.
Shark attacks, threat and sustained suspense make this a poor fit for many younger or sensitive viewers. Check the film’s current rating and content information, and decide whether its intensity is right for your household.
-
The Sound of Music (1965)
This musical drama brings together songs, family relationships and a story set against a period of political danger. Its sweeping performances and enduring music can make it a rewarding experience across generations, while its historical setting offers a point of discussion for older viewers.
The film includes danger and a serious historical backdrop, as well as a runtime and style that may test younger viewers’ attention. The suitability question is less about its “family” label than whether its length and themes suit the people watching.

Hugo (2011)
Martin Scorsese’s film celebrates cinema through the story of an orphan living in a Paris train station. Its visual design and mystery offer children an adventure, while its tribute to early filmmaking gives adults and older children another layer to enjoy. It is a particularly apt pick for families who like stories about how movies are made and remembered.
Its themes of loss and its moments of threat may call for context with younger viewers, and its quieter stretches suit families comfortable with a slower-paced adventure.
-
Finding Neverland (2004)
This drama imagines the experiences behind the creation of Peter Pan, making it a bridge between a familiar children’s story and a more reflective film about imagination, family and loss. Its emotional approach and theatrical setting can prompt conversation across generations.
Despite its connection to a beloved fantasy, it is not a light children’s adventure throughout; its treatment of illness and grief may be difficult for some viewers. Check the rating and content details and consider whether those themes are appropriate for your family.

Choosing one for your family
Start with the viewers, not the label. Consider how a child responds to suspense, separation, loss, frightening images or historical conflict, then check the rating and content information for the film. A Best Picture nomination establishes Oscar-category eligibility; it does not establish age suitability.
