There is no defensible, current one-to-ten ranking of Hollywood studios in the available comparable data. The most reliable way to answer the question is to distinguish the traditional major studios from other significant theatrical competitors, then compare them using clearly labeled measures. The European Commission identifies Disney, Universal, Warner Bros., Sony and Paramount as the traditional “Big Five”; a broader field also includes Lionsgate, A24, Amazon MGM and Apple. A tenth entry cannot be supported by the same evidence, so this is a guide to the established field—not a fabricated top-ten ranking.
One major ownership change is already in effect: Paramount completed its acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery on October 6, 2026, creating a combined company named Skydance. Paramount and Warner Bros. remain distinct studio labels within that corporate group. Skydance’s announcement and the Associated Press report describe the completed transaction.
Why there is no reliable top-ten order
“Biggest” changes with the yardstick. Box-office performance depends on territory and time period; company revenue, theatrical output, production capacity, valuable intellectual property and cultural influence are different measures. A studio that leads one measure need not lead another.
The European Commission’s 2026 merger decision identifies the Big Five based on their position in the theatrical market. It also discusses Lionsgate, A24, Amazon MGM and Apple as competitors or entrants, supporting a broader overview of influential players. But the available figures do not rank all ten on one common basis—and they do not establish a comparable tenth studio. The names below are therefore an evidence-based field, grouped by market position rather than ordered from largest to smallest.

The traditional Hollywood major studios
Disney
Disney is one of the European Commission’s Big Five and a major theatrical distributor. The Film Distributors’ Association (FDA) reported that Disney was the top-grossing studio globally in 2025, with $6.6 billion in box office. The FDA said global totals were still being collated when it published in January 2026, so this is a reported figure rather than a final, independently comparable ranking. In the UK and Ireland, Disney took £247 million and a 23% share of distributor box office in 2025. The FDA’s annual report gives both regional and global figures.
Universal
Universal is another Big Five studio. It led UK and Ireland theatrical distribution in 2025, with £269 million and a 25% share, according to the FDA. That result makes it the regional leader for that year; it should not be read as a global studio ranking.

Warner Bros.
Warner Bros. is a Big Five studio and now belongs to Skydance following the October 2026 acquisition of its former parent, Warner Bros. Discovery. The FDA reported Warner Bros. at £197 million and 19% of UK and Ireland box office in 2025. A Warner Bros. Discovery shareholder letter reported $4.4 billion in Warner Bros. global box office for that year. Sony
Sony is part of the European Commission’s Big Five. The evidence used here establishes its status in that group but does not provide a comparable current box-office figure for ranking it against the other studios. Its place in the traditional major group is not, by itself, a measurement of current size.

Paramount
Paramount is also a Big Five studio. Since October 6, 2026, it has shared a corporate parent with Warner Bros. under the combined company named Skydance. The merger changes corporate ownership, not the fact that Paramount and Warner Bros. are separate studio labels. Paramount’s official history describes its lot as 65 acres with thirty stages; that is a production-site detail, not a measure that establishes its financial or market rank. Other major theatrical competitors
Lionsgate
Lionsgate operates in motion-picture and television production and distribution. Its 2026 SEC filing describes a library of more than 20,000 film and television titles and documents the 2025 separation of the studio business from Starz. The library is a notable measure of its catalog, but it does not establish a box-office rank against the Big Five. A24
A24 is among the theatrical competitors discussed by the European Commission. It released nine films in the European Economic Area (EEA) in each of 2024 and 2025, according to the Commission’s 2026 decision. Those are regional annual release counts, not global output or a financial-size ranking.
Amazon MGM
Amazon acquired MGM in 2022, and the European Commission treats Amazon MGM as a relevant theatrical competitor. The Commission reports that Amazon MGM announced plans for 14 theatrical releases in 2026 and 15 annually by 2027. These are stated targets, not confirmed release totals or proof that it outranks another studio.

Apple
Apple has produced films for theatrical release since 2023 and is identified by the European Commission as an entrant in the theatrical market. That establishes its relevance to a current overview of Hollywood competitors, but not a comparable rank by output or box office.

The most useful current comparison in the available figures is limited to the UK and Ireland in calendar year 2025. It compares distributor box office in one territory—not global studio revenue, all theatrical markets or total corporate size.

Release counts offer another view of reach, but only within the EEA and specified years. The European Commission’s 2026 decision says the Big Five each released between 10 and 18 films annually there in 2023–2025, with Universal at 19 in 2023 and 23 in 2025. A24 released nine in both 2024 and 2025. Amazon MGM’s planned totals are targets, not completed counts. These figures describe output in one region and should not be converted into a global ranking.
What makes a studio powerful
A studio’s scale is not just the number of films it releases. Summarizing evidence from its market investigation, the European Commission says that “access to valuable IP, the ability to attract talent and the overall production budget for the slate of film releases are the most important parameters for a film studio to be successful.” That helps explain why a smaller or newer company can matter even without matching a major’s release volume: access to distinctive projects and the ability to finance and deliver them are separate sources of influence.
