The best Stephen King adaptation depends on what you want to watch: Carrie and The Shining deliver landmark horror, Stand by Me is a coming-of-age drama, and The Shawshank Redemption is a prison story about friendship and hope. This editorial ranking weighs filmmaking and performances, the adaptation’s relationship to its source, critical reputation, and the distinctive experience each film offers—not a single review score.

How this ranking works

King adaptations cross horror, suspense, drama, and coming-of-age storytelling. This list focuses on feature films, not television miniseries, and puts the films in an order shaped by their craft, performances, use of King’s writing, critical standing, and lasting appeal. Give those factors different weight and the order could change. Review aggregates are useful context, not a definitive measure of quality.

For example, the British Film Institute’s 2017 list is an editorial selection, Metacritic ranks adaptations across film and television by Metascore, and Rotten Tomatoes’ guide covers theatrical releases and ranks by Tomatometer. Rotten Tomatoes scores below are snapshots from its accessed guide, not audience ratings or permanent assessments. The BFI’s count of more than 100 film and TV adaptations describes the situation as of summer 2017, not today.

The 10 best Stephen King adaptations

  1. Carrie (1976) — directed by Brian De Palma

The first screen adaptation of King’s work remains a forceful horror film. Sissy Spacek plays Carrie White, a bullied teenager with telekinetic powers; Piper Laurie plays her abusive, fanatically religious mother. De Palma’s visual style and the performers’ work turn the story’s cruelty and revenge into something both intimate and spectacular. The BFI argues that this original outdoes later screen versions. Rotten Tomatoes’ accessed theatrical guide ranked it second, with a 94% Tomatometer snapshot.

Best for: a landmark horror film built around performance, dread, and explosive release.

  2. The Shining (1980) — directed by Stanley Kubrick

Jack Torrance’s psychological collapse in an isolated hotel becomes a study in creeping dread under Kubrick’s exacting direction. The film’s reputation rests partly on its stark images and unnerving atmosphere—and partly on the tension between its artistic identity and King’s novel. King objected to Kubrick’s liberties; the BFI says the film’s impact has not diminished, while Rotten Tomatoes’ consensus acknowledges the divergence and praises its chilling effect. This is a major adaptation, not a faithful rendering of the book. Rotten Tomatoes’ accessed guide showed an 84% Tomatometer snapshot.

Best for: slow-building psychological horror, especially if you are comfortable with a film that reimagines its source.

  3. The Dead Zone (1983) — directed by David Cronenberg

Christopher Walken stars as Johnny Smith, who wakes from a coma with psychic powers and must reckon with what he can foresee. Cronenberg shapes the premise into restrained supernatural suspense, balancing dread with loss, regret, and love rather than leaning on a conventional monster story. The BFI praises the film’s emotional range, and Rotten Tomatoes’ guide describes it as one of King’s stronger adaptations. Its Tomatometer snapshot there was 89%.

Best for: viewers who want supernatural tension driven by moral pressure and emotional consequences.

  4. Stand by Me (1986) — directed by Rob Reiner

Four boys set out to find a missing boy’s body and encounter friendship, fear, and the edge of growing up. Reiner adapts King’s novella “The Body,” published in Different Seasons, as a coming-of-age drama rather than horror. That shift makes it the clearest tonal counterweight to the frightening films on this list. The BFI reports that King said after a private screening, “That’s the best film ever made out of anything I’ve written.” Rotten Tomatoes’ guide ranked it third, with an 89% Tomatometer snapshot.

Best for: a heartfelt, non-horror adaptation about friendship and childhood.

  5. Misery (1990) — directed by Rob Reiner

An injured novelist, Paul Sheldon, is trapped by Annie Wilkes, a fan whose devotion has turned dangerous. The film’s confined setting sharpens its suspense, while the clash between the two leads makes obsession and authorship feel immediate. The BFI highlights Kathy Bates and James Caan’s contrasting performances; Bates won an Oscar for her performance, as noted by Metacritic. Rotten Tomatoes’ accessed guide recorded an 86% Tomatometer snapshot.

Best for: taut psychological suspense centered on two strong performances.

  6. The Shawshank Redemption (1994) — written and directed by Frank Darabont

Adapted from King’s novella “Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption,” this prison drama follows Andy Dufresne and his friendship with Red. Its focus is not supernatural horror but the bonds people form and the ways they try to make a life under harsh conditions. The BFI emphasizes those themes. Metacritic records seven Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, Best Actor for Morgan Freeman, and Best Adapted Screenplay. Rotten Tomatoes’ guide showed an 89% Tomatometer snapshot.

Best for: an expansive prison drama about friendship, endurance, and hope.

  7. The Green Mile (1999) — directed by Frank Darabont

Set on death row during the Great Depression, the film follows prison officer Paul Edgecomb’s encounter with John Coffey, a prisoner with supernatural powers. Darabont uses the fantastical premise to tell a broad character drama with a life-affirming turn, rather than building the story around conventional horror. The BFI presents it as Darabont’s second major King prison drama.

Best for: a supernatural story told on the scale of an emotional period drama.

  8. 1922 (2017) — written and directed by Zak Hilditch

A farmer persuades his teenage son to help murder his wife, then lives with the consequences. The horror grows from guilt and psychological unraveling, giving the film a compact, patient sense of dread instead of a sprawling supernatural mythology. Rotten Tomatoes’ guide ranked it fourth, with a 92% Tomatometer snapshot, and praised its patient storytelling and Thomas Jane’s performance.

Best for: a modern, contained descent into guilt and dread.

  9. Gerald’s Game (2017) — directed by Mike Flanagan

After her husband dies during a sexual game, a woman is left handcuffed to a bed. The constrained setup becomes psychological suspense and a reckoning with trauma. Carla Gugino and Bruce Greenwood lead the film, which Metacritic identifies as a Netflix adaptation of King’s 1992 novel. Rotten Tomatoes’ accessed guide listed a 91% Tomatometer snapshot.

Best for: intimate psychological suspense that turns a single setting into a test of survival.

  10. The Long Walk (2025) — directed by Francis Lawrence

Francis Lawrence adapts King’s dystopian survival story, based on the novel he wrote first. It brings a stark, endurance-focused mode to a list otherwise known for haunted hotels, psychic powers, and intimate dramas. Rotten Tomatoes’ guide placed it at the top of its current theatrical ranking, but the page showed conflicting figures: its entry displayed 88%, while its introductory text reported 95%. The ranking position is therefore more useful here than either unverified score. King’s official catalog lists the film’s release date as 12 September 2025.

Best for: dystopian survival drama and a newer theatrical adaptation.

Which adaptation should you watch first?

  • For classic horror: start with Carrie; choose The Shining for slower, more psychologically unsettling dread.
  • For supernatural suspense: try The Dead Zone for moral tension or The Green Mile for a broader, more emotional drama.
  • For a story that is not horror: watch Stand by Me for coming-of-age friendship or The Shawshank Redemption for a prison drama.
  • For contained psychological tension: choose Misery for a two-lead captivity story, Gerald’s Game for a trauma-centered survival story, or 1922 for dread rooted in guilt.
  • For a newer dystopian film: try The Long Walk.

Strong alternatives—and the television distinction

These films are a focused selection, not an exhaustive canon. Dolores Claiborne (1995) is a strong drama-forward alternative; Rotten Tomatoes’ accessed guide listed it at 87%. The Life of Chuck (2024) is a more recent option, listed at 80% in the same guide. Scores can change and do not settle a film’s worth.

Including television changes the scope. Salem’s Lot (1979) is a two-part miniseries, not a feature film; the BFI praises Tobe Hooper’s unsettling atmosphere, and Metacritic lists an 82 Metascore. The 1990 It is also a miniseries, while It (2017) is a separate theatrical adaptation. Metacritic includes television in its ranking; Rotten Tomatoes’ guide cited here covers theatrical films.

The Running Man (1987) is another worthwhile comparison if entertainment value matters more than fidelity: the BFI calls it a very loose adaptation of King’s Richard Bachman novel. Likewise, The Shining illustrates why closeness to the book and success as a film are not the same test.

How critics’ lists differ

Ranking methods explain why reputable lists do not produce one settled order. The BFI’s 2017 selection is editorially curated; Metacritic uses Metascores and includes television; Rotten Tomatoes’ cited guide ranks theatrical adaptations by Tomatometer. Vanity Fair’s 2021 film ranking foregrounded fidelity to King’s work. A ranking based on book closeness, critic aggregates, or preferred genre can therefore put different films first.
