The ten-film list also includes older catalog additions such as Life, Easy A, and American Psycho.
Important scope note: This is the early-July 2024 snapshot behind the Forbes list published on July 6, 2024. It covers films available through July 7, 2024—not every movie Netflix added during the full month, and not a claim about what remains on Netflix now. Netflix availability varies by country and changes over time.

The list is also broader than “new Netflix movies” might suggest. Only some selections were Netflix-backed releases; others were older licensed films newly added to the catalog. The result is a mixed viewing guide: a returning action hero, a Japanese animated fantasy, a space thriller, a hard-hitting documentary, several catalog discoveries, and films for horror, fantasy, comedy, and romance fans.
1. Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F (2024)
Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F is the clearest crowd-pleaser in the group. Eddie Murphy returns as Detroit detective Axel Foley, who heads back to Beverly Hills after his daughter Jane’s life is threatened. Foley joins forces with Jane and Detective Bobby Abbott while reconnecting with familiar franchise figures Billy Rosewood and John Taggart.

#1 Best Overall
Netflix scheduled the film for July 3, 2024. Its appeal is straightforward: Murphy’s established comic presence, a recognizable action-comedy formula, and the emotional complication of Axel trying to protect and reconnect with his daughter. It is best approached as a nostalgic franchise continuation and an accessible streaming adventure—not as an objective critical-consensus choice. The Forbes list presents it as the writer’s top recommendation.
2. The Imaginary (2024)
Netflix added the Japanese animated fantasy The Imaginary on July 5, 2024. Its central character is Rudger, an imaginary companion whose existence is endangered when the person who imagined him begins to forget him.
That premise gives the film both a family-friendly entry point and a surprisingly serious emotional question: what happens to imagination when it is no longer remembered? The film comes from Studio Ponoc, and comparisons to the visual and emotional traditions associated with Studio Ghibli may help viewers understand its appeal. That is a stylistic comparison, however, not a statement that Studio Ponoc is officially a replacement or “new” Studio Ghibli.
Choose this one for imaginative world-building, expressive animation, and a gentler fantasy adventure with stakes that concern memory, friendship, and identity.
3. Life (2017)
Life is not a new 2024 production. It is a 2017 science-fiction thriller that appeared as a Netflix catalog addition during the early-July window. Jake Gyllenhaal, Ryan Reynolds, and Rebecca Ferguson lead the cast as astronauts aboard the International Space Station who discover a rapidly evolving life form.
The film works as contained space horror: a small crew, limited escape routes, and an organism that becomes more dangerous as the investigation continues. It is a good choice when the desired mood is escalating survival suspense rather than expansive science fiction. Viewers should expect a tense, claustrophobic thriller with disturbing creature violence.
Rank #2
4. Going Clear: Scientology and The Prison of Belief (2015)
For documentary viewers, Going Clear: Scientology and The Prison of Belief is the most directly relevant selection. Alex Gibney’s investigative documentary examines Scientology through interviews with former members, archival material, and an account of the organization’s history and practices. Contemporary Netflix-release coverage listed it among the July 5 additions.
The film is forceful and highly critical, making it a substantial choice for viewers interested in religious movements, institutional power, celebrity culture, and the experiences of people who say they left Scientology. Because the documentary deals with contested claims and allegations of abuse, those claims should be understood as presented through the film’s interviews, reporting, and evidentiary framework—not as a blanket assertion that every allegation has been independently established.
This is the strongest pick on the list for a serious documentary night, particularly when the goal is to watch something investigative rather than purely escapist.
5. Easy A (2010)
Easy A is another older film that entered the catalog rather than a new Netflix release. Emma Stone plays Olive, a high-school student whose false story about her sex life spreads until the rumor changes how classmates see her. The premise loosely modernizes Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter.
Stone’s performance is the main attraction: bright, quick, and charismatic, with the film serving as an early showcase for the star she would become. Beneath its cheerful teen-comedy surface, Easy A satirizes gossip, sexual double standards, reputation, and the speed with which a school community turns a person into a story.

6. Magic Mike XXL (2015)
Magic Mike XXL follows Mike Lane and his former crew on a final road trip centered on performance, friendship, and dance. Channing Tatum leads an ensemble that includes Matt Bomer, Joe Manganiello, Jada Pinkett Smith, Elizabeth Banks, Donald Glover, and Andie MacDowell.
The sequel is more useful as a celebratory road movie than as a simple repeat of the first film’s premise. Its emphasis is on group chemistry, choreography, performance, and the pleasure of watching people commit to putting on a show. The result is unusually upbeat and communal for a film built around an erotic-dance profession.
Pick it for an energetic, good-humored ensemble film. Its strongest selling point is its positive performance energy and camaraderie, not a complicated plot.
7. American Psycho (2000)
Mary Harron’s American Psycho follows Patrick Bateman, a wealthy investment banker whose apparent double life becomes the vehicle for psychological horror and satire. Christian Bale’s performance anchors the film, while the setting—1980s status culture, luxury consumption, corporate ambition, and emotional vacancy—provides its larger target.
The film’s ambiguity is part of its design. Interpretations of what Bateman experiences and what the ending means remain deliberately unsettled; the uncertainty should not be reduced to one definitive plot explanation. Beneath the violence, the film is concerned with materialism, identity, power, and the frightening ease with which a person can disappear into a social role.
Content note: American Psycho contains graphic violence, disturbing imagery, misogynistic behavior, and psychologically upsetting material. It is not a conventional thriller or a casual background watch.
8. Pan (2015)
Pan reworks the Peter Pan mythology as an origin story. Levi Miller plays Peter, with Garrett Hedlund as Hook and Hugh Jackman as Blackbeard. Rather than retelling the familiar Neverland story directly, the film remixes its characters and mythology into a colorful fantasy adventure.
The recommendation rests on its visual style, playful tone, musical choices, and willingness to make the setting feel large and theatrical. It is best suited to viewers who enjoy stylized fantasy and imaginative adaptations, especially those willing to treat a familiar story as a remix rather than a definitive version.
Rank #4
- Factory sealed DVD
The recommendation is an editorial judgment, not evidence of universal acclaim. Approach Pan for spectacle and invention rather than expecting a straightforward or traditional Peter Pan adaptation.
9. Jigsaw (2017)
Jigsaw is the eighth film in the Saw franchise. It introduces a new series of traps associated with the Jigsaw killer, while investigators try to determine how the crimes connect to the franchise’s established history.
The film is aimed squarely at horror-franchise viewers. Its appeal lies in suspense mechanics, trap construction, visual staging, and moral questions about punishment and culpability. It can be watched without knowing every earlier Saw installment, but its characters, mythology, and significance will make more sense to viewers familiar with the series.
Content note: This is graphic horror, with disturbing trap sequences, violence, and gruesome imagery. It is not an entry-level family thriller, despite the comparatively restrained wording of its title.

Luca Guadagnino’s Call Me by Your Name is a slow-burning romantic drama set in 1980s Italy. It follows 17-year-old Elio and Oliver, a 24-year-old American scholar staying with Elio’s family. The film’s atmosphere comes from its sunlit setting, naturalistic performances, intimate pacing, and Sufjan Stevens’ music.
The drama is concerned with desire, memory, first love, and impermanence. Its emotional effect depends less on plot mechanics than on small gestures, changing boundaries, and the feeling of a summer that cannot last. At the same time, the central relationship involves a minor and an adult; descriptions should not erase that age imbalance or romanticize it without context. Viewers should consider the characters’ ages and the power dynamics alongside the film’s beauty and melancholy.
Choose it for a reflective, sensual coming-of-age drama rather than a fast-moving romance.

The strongest documentary choice is Going Clear, while the most broadly accessible new release is Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F.
