Spoilers ahead: this article discusses major plot turns and the ending of Andhadhun. Director Sriram Raghavan and co-writers Pooja Ladha Surti and Arijit Biswas designed the 2018 Hindi thriller’s final moments to remain open to interpretation—not to deliver a single confirmed answer.
What is Andhadhun about?
Released on October 5, 2018, Andhadhun follows Akash, a pianist who pretends to be blind. His deception draws him into a murder and a succession of unstable alliances, as the people around him struggle to decide what he can see, what he knows, and whether they can trust him.

Ayushmann Khurrana plays Akash, Tabu is Simi, Radhika Apte is Sophie, and Anil Dhawan is Pramod Sinha. In a December 17, 2018 interview with Scroll.in, journalist Nandini Ramnath spoke with Raghavan, Ladha Surti and Biswas about how the story took shape and why its ending resists a settled explanation.
What happens at the end of Andhadhun?
The film leaves the audience with uncertainty about Akash’s fate and the truth of his account to Sophie. Among the possibilities raised in the makers’ discussion: Akash accepted Swamy’s offer and regained his sight; he survived by another route; or he is telling Sophie a fabricated story. These are interpretations, not events the film or interview confirms as the one definitive answer.

The last rabbit-cane action adds another clue for viewers to weigh, but it does not settle the questions. The ending invites the audience to consider what Akash might have done, what he wants Sophie to believe, and how much trust his story deserves.
Was Akash blind throughout the film?
The theory that Akash was never blind does not fit the climax, according to co-writer Arijit Biswas. He distinguishes that reading from the film’s intended uncertainty about what happens later. The open ending is not proof that every earlier scene was a lie.
Did Akash accept Swamy’s offer and regain his sight?
That is one possible reading, but the interview does not establish it as fact. Raghavan said he wanted to leave room for debate rather than commit to one answer. As he put it: “My ending is the one that I want people to debate. The fact that people get a kick out of the ending is great.”
Did the creators know what happened?
Biswas described the aim as “a real open end where even the creators did not know what happened.” That comment captures the intended openness; it does not turn any individual theory into an official plot resolution.
How the film’s story changed during development
The setting moved from Pondicherry to Pune
Raghavan said the story was originally intended to take place in Pondicherry before the team shifted it to Pune. The opening sequence also changed as the film developed, reflecting a process in which the filmmakers kept adjusting the story rather than simply following a fixed first draft.
The second half took nine months to write
Raghavan said writing the second half took nine months. The interview describes a back-and-forth process: ideas were proposed, some directions were rejected, and new characters entered the story. That extended revision helps explain why the plot keeps changing the balance of power among its characters.
Pacing was a deliberate choice
Some viewers felt the early section moved slowly and wanted the first murder to happen sooner. Cinematographer K. U. Mohanan reportedly advised against disrupting the pace. The film’s gradual build gives the viewer time to understand Akash’s performance and the danger of maintaining it before the story accelerates.

Raghavan described the film’s tonal inspiration as Fargo: shock and comedy can coexist, even when the events themselves are violent. That contrast makes the humor unsettling rather than a release from the plot’s danger.
The blind rabbit also works as a metaphor connected to Akash’s predicament. It echoes the film’s interest in vulnerability and in the gap between what someone appears to perceive and what is actually happening. Another pointed reference is to Elevator to the Gallows in the scene involving Manohar’s death, placing a moment in Andhadhun in conversation with earlier cinema.
Where to watch Andhadhun
The Scroll.in interview establishes the film’s historical release date, but it does not confirm current streaming availability or whether a physical edition is in stock. Access can vary by region and change over time, so check current local listings rather than relying on the 2018 interview for availability.
