Tetris marked its 40th anniversary on June 6, 2024, with a year-long celebration spanning games, tournaments, collaborations and fan events—not one single party. The Tetris Company said the game had sold more than 520 million units worldwide as of its 2024 announcement, a company-reported figure rather than an independently audited or current total.
How Tetris began—and why the anniversary mattered
Programmer Alexey Pajitnov created Tetris in 1984, inspired by the puzzle board game Pentominos. The official history describes seven geometric pieces, each made of four squares, that fall in real time. The name combines “tetra,” meaning four, with “tennis,” Pajitnov’s favorite sport. The Tetris Company’s history of the game explains its origins and basic design.
For the 40th anniversary, the company reported more than 520 million units sold worldwide. That figure is attributed to The Tetris Company in its June 6, 2024 release; it should not be read as a current count or an independent audit. The company’s anniversary announcement also quoted CEO Maya Rogers describing the appeal of a game that is “easy to play and highly intuitive, making it accessible to everyone.”
What Tetris did for its 40th anniversary
The company presented the milestone as a year-long program mixing digital play, licensed products and competitive events. Some announcements described time-limited offers or planned launches for 2024, so they are historical rather than current availability information.

Games and collaborations
- The company announced a revamped official mobile app with Marathon and Adventure modes, hundreds of levels and multiplayer challenges. Playstudios also launched Tetris Block Puzzle. These details describe the 2024 announcement, not necessarily the apps’ present features.
- A Tetris x Minecraft downloadable-content launch was planned for July 30, 2024, alongside Tetris-branded Minecraft add-ons.
- Consumer collaborations included a G FUEL limited-edition 40-serving Tetris Blast energy tub, a caffeine-free hydration formula and a 24-ounce glow-in-the-dark shaker cup. The announcement does not establish that these products remain available.
Tournaments and limited-time play
- The 15th annual Classic Tetris World Championship was scheduled for June 7–9, 2024, at the SoCal Gaming Expo in Pasadena, using the NES version.
- The company announced a June 6–17, 2024 discount for Tetris Effect: Connected across major platforms, including a Meta Quest checkout code. That promotion has expired.
Together, the plans show the anniversary reaching beyond a game update: it connected different Tetris formats with licensed brands, tournament players and a wider fan community. The 2024 announcement sets out the campaign’s events and collaborations.
The Tetris Block Party brought the celebration online
The Tetris Block Party was one specific part of the broader anniversary program, not the name of the entire celebration. Announced by The Tetris Company and Enhance on July 16, 2024, it began July 19 and ran across three weekends. The schedule paired Friday party nights with Saturday tournaments.

The company’s retrospective and official Tetris site provide useful routes for people who want to explore the series. Tetris Forever offers historical games and documentary content; Tetris The Board Game translates the falling-block concept into competitive tabletop play. Those are distinct ways to engage with the franchise, not a ranking of which is best. Current platforms, formats, prices and stock can change.
The official site also lists merchandise, including an ILTHY x Tetris 40th Anniversary Varsity Jacket. That apparel commemorates the brand rather than offering a playable Tetris experience, and a listing does not guarantee present inventory.
