Terry Reid, the British singer, guitarist and songwriter whom Jimmy Page asked to front the group that became Led Zeppelin, died on August 4, 2025, aged 75. Reid declined because he had two American tours booked—and recommended Robert Plant and John Bonham instead. That near-miss became part of his story, but it was only one episode in a recording and performing career that lasted almost 60 years.
What happened when Jimmy Page approached Terry Reid?
Page asked Reid to become the singer in the new group he was forming after the Yardbirds. Reid turned him down because he was committed to two American tours. In Reid’s own recollection, “Jimmy Page offered me the job, but I had two tours of America booked up.” (Reid’s official interview archive)
Rather than leave Page without a lead, Reid pointed him toward Robert Plant, then performing with Band of Joy. Reid remembered seeing Plant and telling Page, “I’ve found him, the singer”. Plant joined the group that became Led Zeppelin, and John Bonham, also associated with Band of Joy, followed. Reid’s role was therefore not as a member of Led Zeppelin, but as the musician who declined Page’s offer and helped direct him to two future members.
Why did Terry Reid’s career matter beyond the Led Zeppelin story?
Reid built a career on his own terms as a singer, guitarist and songwriter, releasing albums and performing across rock and blues. The Guardian’s 2025 obituary describes a career spanning almost 60 years and counts six studio albums. It also quotes Reid’s sense of belonging to a working musical community: “I’m part of a society of musicians and I love that I can go out there and sing.” (The Guardian obituary)

His music drew appreciation beyond his solo records, too. The Guardian and Reid’s official biography describe collaborations or work with artists including Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt and Dr Dre. He also toured with the Rolling Stones. Those associations show the range of his musical life more clearly than the counterfactual question of what his career might have been in Led Zeppelin.
Which Terry Reid albums are good starting points?
Two documented records offer different windows on Reid’s recorded work. River (1973) gained broader appreciation after its reissue, according to The Guardian; Seed of Memory (1976) was produced by Graham Nash, according to Reid’s official biography.

Did Terry Reid also turn down Deep Purple?

When did Terry Reid die?
Reid died on August 4, 2025, at age 75. The Guardian and Los Angeles Times reported his death in August 2025. Cleopatra Records also confirmed the news; Classic Rock reproduced the label’s statement expressing its sadness and describing Reid as a friend to the label.
