Netflix’s Magic: The Gathering animated series is taking a new creative direction under Terry Matalas, whom the company named showrunner and executive producer in September 2024. The announcement came after Netflix had introduced a different creative team for the project in 2019, but Netflix has not explained exactly what happened to every element of that earlier development.
What changed with Netflix’s Magic: The Gathering show?
On September 20, 2024, Netflix announced that its animated adaptation of the tabletop card game was in production with Matalas leading a “new creative direction.” Netflix named Hasbro Entertainment and Wizards of the Coast as partners, and Patrick Osborne as supervising director and executive producer. Netflix’s announcement establishes a real creative reset, but does not say that all work from the earlier version was discarded.
Matalas described the collaboration as “an absolute dream” and said the team aimed to bring Magic’s many worlds to streaming. Hasbro Entertainment executive Gabriel Marano likewise framed the project as a long-term effort to build narrative worlds and relationships with fans. Marano’s remarks emphasize the company’s ambitions; they do not confirm a release schedule or guarantee multiple seasons.

What is known about the series’ development?
Scripts, casting, and animatics in May 2025
A May 23, 2025 report by Star City Games, based on Matalas’s appearance on The Sackhoff Show, said the first-season scripts were complete and work had moved to casting and animatics. It also reported that Chandra Nalaar would be the focal character. These are details reported at that time, not confirmation of the series’ present status.

DIGIC named as animation studio
In June 2025, animation company DIGIC announced its selection as the series’ animation studio and described the show as in production with Matalas, Hasbro Entertainment, and Wizards of the Coast. That statement confirms the reported arrangement in June 2025; it does not by itself establish where production stands now.
Is the series still happening, and when will it come out?
The available official announcements establish the series’ production and creative team in 2024, and DIGIC’s June 2025 announcement described it as in production. They do not establish its current production status or a release date as of October 2026.

Netflix’s January 7, 2026 slate announcement says its list is not comprehensive. The show’s absence from that list therefore does not prove that it was canceled, delayed, or excluded from Netflix’s full slate. Netflix has not provided a release window in the cited announcements. The 2026 slate announcement should be read with that limitation in mind.

The confirmed premise is an animated series based on the Magic: The Gathering tabletop game. The May 2025 report identified Chandra Nalaar as the focal character, but Netflix’s cited announcement does not provide a full plot, cast, episode count, or premiere date. Those details should not be treated as settled beyond what the dated report specifically described.
