Ardent’s official history says the business began in the Fry family garage in 1959 and moved to 1457 National Street in 1966, with Manning among the key collaborators who joined the staff. Ardent describes its National Street location as the first studio in Memphis to offer four-track recording; that is a claim about the studio, not an invention attributed to Manning. See Ardent Studios’ history and its account of four-track recording in Memphis.

Manning worked on Big Star’s first album, #1 Record, as a producer and contributed keyboards and backing vocals, according to the obituary. Manning worked on sessions for Led Zeppelin III at Ardent in Memphis. A 2002 Billboard feature, preserved by World Radio History, recounts his recollection that Jimmy Page contacted him about using the studio to finish the album around the band’s tour dates. Discussing the guitar solo on “Since I’ve Been Loving You,” Manning recalled: “It was one take! No overdubs, no punch-ins. Unbelievable.” That is Manning’s account of the session, as quoted in the archived 2002 Billboard feature, rather than independent verification of the recording details.
