Territory is a six-episode Australian neo-Western drama about a cattle-station dynasty fighting to control Marianne Station after the death of Daniel Lawson. The series is scripted fiction—not a documentary about the Australian cattle industry—but it uses the Northern Territory’s pastoral landscape to explore inheritance, Indigenous interests, mining pressure, addiction, masculinity and family power.
Season 1 premiered on Netflix on October 24, 2024. It remains the only produced season, and reports in February 2025 said Netflix had cancelled the series after one season. The exact reason was not publicly confirmed.
What is Territory about?
The story begins when Daniel Lawson, a key member of the family that controls the enormous Marianne Station, is found dead. His death leaves the Lawson dynasty without an obvious successor and turns the station into the prize in a struggle involving family members, cattle interests, Indigenous elders, desert criminals and billionaire mining interests.
Colin Lawson, the family patriarch, must decide who is capable of taking control. His son Graham wants power, but personal instability and political pressure complicate his ambitions. Daniel’s widow, Emily, becomes one of the season’s central forces as she tries to protect her own future and understand what happened to her husband. Younger family members, including Marshall, are pulled into the succession crisis through relationships, danger and divided loyalties.

Marianne Station is more than a backdrop. It is an economic empire, a family inheritance and contested land. That makes the show a family saga and a Western at the same time: the violence comes not only from guns and criminals, but also from competing claims to ownership, legitimacy and the future of the property.
Important classification: Territory is an Australian television drama. It is not a factual documentary or an unscripted account of a real cattle station.
Is Territory an Australian version of Yellowstone?
It is reasonable to describe Territory as an Australian neo-Western family drama in the orbit of Yellowstone. Both series center on powerful ranching or pastoral families confronting succession battles and outside threats. However, Territory is not a remake, official spinoff or Australian adaptation of Yellowstone.
Its identity comes from the Northern Territory setting and from its focus on Australian pastoral politics, Indigenous interests and mining pressure. The tone is heightened and melodramatic, with sudden reversals and criminal danger, but the land dispute at its center gives it a distinct Australian context.

Emily’s response introduces the personal side of the conflict. She is grieving and looking for support while also confronting the practical consequences of Daniel’s death. The episode presents Marianne Station as both a business empire and a contested homeland, setting up the show’s wider land and power conflicts.
Episode 2: Pastoral politics and a missing family member
Graham’s campaign for federation president connects the station’s private succession battle to public pastoral leadership. He needs Colin’s approval, but the pressure affects his judgment and contributes to his drinking.
Emily turns to Hank for help finding Marshall. That search expands the story beyond the immediate question of who inherits the station. Political influence, family loyalty and personal dependence begin to overlap.
Episode 3: Deals, community conflict and a dangerous job
Nolan is drawn into conflict with the Indigenous community, bringing the series’ land-politics strand further into the foreground. At the same time, Sandra begins proposing deals that could change the balance of power around the station.
Marshall and Rich are placed under additional strain when a dangerous job goes wrong or becomes more threatening than expected. The episode shows how the younger characters are being used—or forced to participate—in the older generation’s contest for control.
Episode 4: Daniel’s saddle raises new questions
The discovery of Daniel’s saddle is one of the season’s most important mystery developments. It does not close the question of his death; it intensifies suspicion and makes the past newly relevant to the present succession fight.
Graham’s behavior becomes increasingly unstable. Marshall and Sharnie find comfort in their relationship, while Susie begins to pursue a direction of her own rather than simply accepting the Lawson family’s expectations.
Episode 5: The cattle muster turns violent
The Lawsons attempt a major cattle muster while the competing sides observe an uneasy truce. The operation should be a demonstration of the family’s ability to manage Marianne Station, but sabotage and tragedy expose how fragile that authority has become.

This is the point at which the succession story becomes overtly physical. The family is no longer dealing only with negotiations, political maneuvering and suspicious clues. The station itself has become a dangerous battlefield.
Episode 6: The shootout and the season’s unresolved future
In the finale, Emily reassesses whether she wants a future at Marianne Station. Lachie reveals information that changes the way Sandra’s motives can be understood, and the rival claims to the Lawson empire culminate in a shootout.
Spoilers: The ending is not a neat inheritance ceremony in which one Lawson simply receives the station. Instead, the season follows its premise toward a violent confrontation that determines the fate of several major characters and leaves the station’s power structure unsettled. Daniel’s death remains the event that set everything in motion, while Emily, Colin, Graham, Marshall, Sandra, Lachie, Nolan and the surrounding factions are all affected by the final conflict.
The finale provides consequences and character fates, but it does not completely settle every question about Marianne Station or the long-term balance among the rival interests. Those open threads could have supported another season. Because the series was later reported to have been cancelled, they now function as unresolved elements of the only produced season rather than confirmed setup for a continuation.

The show is best approached as a melodramatic neo-Western rather than a realistic procedural or documentary. It contains cattle-industry and land-politics themes, but its storytelling also relies on twists, criminal danger, relationship conflicts and escalation. Viewers looking for a restrained factual portrait of pastoral life may find its heightened style excessive; viewers looking for a fast-moving family saga may find that style part of the appeal.
How was Season 1 received?
Critical response was generally favorable but not unanimous. In the cited Rotten Tomatoes snapshot, the season had an 87% critics’ score from 15 reviews and a 53% audience score from more than 100 ratings. Metacritic listed the season at 71 out of 100 from four critic reviews, categorized as generally favorable.
Those numbers can change as review counts and user ratings change, so they should be understood as a dated snapshot rather than a permanent measurement. The broad takeaway is that critics tended to recognize the show’s setting and entertaining neo-Western energy, while audience response was considerably more mixed.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Will there be a Territory Season 2?
No Season 2 is currently expected. In February 2025, Australian television and industry reports said Netflix ANZ had cancelled Territory after one season.
Netflix’s exact reasoning was not publicly confirmed. One report cited logistical concerns about producing a second season quickly enough, but that should be treated as reported industry context, not as an official explanation from Netflix. The available reports described Netflix expressing gratitude to the cast and production team without establishing a definitive cancellation cause.
As a result, Season 1 is the only produced season. Its unresolved power dynamics and open consequences remain part of the ending rather than a story that has been continued on screen.
What should you watch after Territory?
If the appeal is the combination of a wealthy or powerful family, land ownership and succession, Yellowstone is the most obvious comparison. The distinction matters, however: Territory brings an Australian Northern Territory setting and its own Indigenous, pastoral and mining concerns to that formula.
For documentary viewers particularly interested in the real-world context, a separate factual program or article about Northern Territory cattle stations, Indigenous land interests or Australian pastoral history would be a better follow-up than treating the fictional Marianne Station as a documentary subject.
