That makes Yellowstone a useful shorthand for its family-and-land premise—but Territory is a distinct neo-Western, set in the Australian outback and shaped by its own characters and land context.
What is Territory about?
The story begins with the future of Marianne Station, a fictional cattle property, uncertain after the apparent loss of an heir. The Lawson family faces a succession struggle, while outsiders see an opening to gain influence over the station. Netflix describes the competing forces as rival cattle interests, desert gangsters, Indigenous elders and billionaire miners.
The principal cast includes Anna Torv as Emily Lawson, Michael Dorman as Graham Lawson, Robert Taylor as Colin Lawson, Sam Corlett as Marshall Lawson, Sara Wiseman as Sandra Kirby, Dan Wyllie as Hank Hodge and Clarence Ryan as Nolan Brannock. Other cast members include Jay Ryan, Philippa Northeast, Joe Klocek, Kylah Day, Sam Delich, Hamilton Morris, Tuuli Narkle, Tyler Spencer and Jake Ryan. Netflix lists Timothy Lee and Ben Davies as creators; the writers are Timothy Lee, Kodie Bedford, Steven McGregor and Michaeley O’Brien. Greg McLean directed, and Easy Tiger and Ronde produced the series for Netflix. Netflix’s series announcement and its Tudum overview provide the premise and credits.
Why compare it with Yellowstone?
The comparison works at the level of a broad story hook: a family dynasty, a major cattle property and powerful outsiders competing for influence. The Lawson family’s struggle over Marianne Station is the clearest parallel. Netflix calls Territory a neo-Western, but the available sources establish no direct connection between the two series: it is not identified as a Yellowstone spin-off, remake or continuation.

The differences matter as much as the resemblance. Territory is set in Australia, and its announced factions include Indigenous elders alongside cattle interests, gangsters and miners. It should not be treated as an American ranch story with the place names changed. In ABC News, Clarence Ryan, who plays Nolan Brannock, described his character as “stuck in between two worlds where he’s navigating between being a station owner and an Indigenous man.” That is Ryan speaking about a character, not a substitute for the range of Indigenous perspectives on land and ownership. ABC News’ report discusses the actors’ perspectives and the series’ land tensions.
What makes the Australian setting distinctive?
Netflix says the production filmed across the Northern Territory and South Australia, including Kakadu National Park and the working Tipperary Station. The Kakadu filming took place with special permission from Traditional Owners. These are production locations; filming there does not mean every location is open to visitors or that the fictional Marianne Station is a real destination. Netflix’s location overview describes the sites and permission.

The word station can also mislead viewers unfamiliar with Australian pastoral language: here it means a large livestock property, not a railway station. Netflix explains that station owners are commonly called graziers or pastoralists, and that a muster means gathering cattle or sheep. Those terms orient the viewer to the show’s setting; they are not a complete account of pastoral land tenure or its history.
The production had a regional footprint as well. The South Australian Film Corporation says the series was formerly titled Desert King, and described it at the time of its announcement as the biggest Netflix series filmed in South Australia. That is the corporation’s description at announcement, not a current ranking. Its production note also records work in production and post-production in the state.
