David Howard Thornton has said that mystery is part of Art’s appeal—and October 2025 reporting pointed to an origin story in development for Terrifier 4, without disclosing its plot or release date.
How did Art the Clown get his start?
Art’s screen origins were incremental, rather than the result of a fully mapped backstory. In a 2022 interview, writer-director Damien Leone said he first set out to make a short that showcased his special-effects work. Its opening involved a clown terrorizing and abducting a woman at a train station, before the story moved into a tale of a cult, demons, and creatures. Viewers responded especially strongly to the clown and asked to see more.
Leone followed that response with a 20-minute Terrifier short focused on Art chasing and terrorizing a woman. He described it as the moment he turned the character into a slasher figure: “That’s when I turned him into a slasher character.” Audience interest then helped point the way toward a feature film. Leone’s 2022 interview describes that creative progression.
Leone said Art’s personality also took shape over successive projects, including a dark sense of humor. At the time of that interview, the films had not yet explained exactly what Art was or why he acted as he did. Leone once described writing him as if “the Devil and Jack the Ripper had a kid”—a vivid description of the character’s tone, not an explanation of his identity within the story.

Why does David Howard Thornton want Art’s mystery preserved?
Thornton, who portrays Art through silent performance under heavy stage makeup, sees the character as an inversion of the familiar clown role. In Cheryl Eddy’s October 15, 2024 Gizmodo interview, he called Art an “anti-clown”: “clowns are supposed to bring joy and amusement to other people, but he is here to bring pain and misery to other people for his own joy and amusement.”
Thornton welcomed the films’ slow accumulation of clues about Art, but cautioned against answering every question too soon. “I do like the idea that we’ve been slowly revealing his origins,” he said. He added that learning a villain’s identity or motivation too early can strip away the mystery that makes the character compelling. He compared the gradual approach to the Nightmare on Elm Street films.

- The enigmatic Art the Clown is here to stalk your shelves.
- The iconic villain from Damien Leone’s Terrifier is getting NECA’s Ultimate treatment.
- Capturing every eerie detail of the silent slasher, this 7-inch scale articulated action figure includes interchangeable expressions and hands.
That distinction matters: showing how Art became the figure audiences recognize would not necessarily identify who he was before. Thornton put it this way: “Yeah, we might show how he became Art [in a future film or films], but we might not necessarily say who he actually was before that.” His comments described a possibility, not a promise that the films would provide a complete biography.
What is known about Terrifier 4—and what remains unknown?
By October 2025, Terrifier 4 was reported to be in early development while Leone wrote the script. Thornton said Leone was keeping its details close and had told him, “you’re gonna love the origin story.” He also recalled Leone describing the finale as “bat-shit insane.” Those remarks are Thornton’s account of private conversations, not a public synopsis or confirmation of particular plot events. GamesRadar+ reported the comments in October 2025 and said no release date had been announced at that time.

Leone has also described an intentionally abstract approach to Art’s backstory. In 2025, he said he wanted to tell it “almost in a Lynchian way,” invoking David Lynch’s approach to storytelling. Leone stressed that preserving “the mystique” is important to why Art works; revealing too much, in his view, could weaken the character. That approach leaves open how much of Art’s past the next film will actually explain. GamesRadar+ covered Leone’s comments in 2025.
The franchise’s endpoint is unsettled, too. In a 2024 interview, Leone said he knew the ending but was still developing the story, and considered it premature to say whether everything before the finale would fit into one additional film or require two. Thornton later described the fourth film as possibly concluding the current story arc, while leaving open a return after a break. Neither statement establishes a final film count. Leone’s earlier planning comments were reported by GamesRadar+ in 2024.
