Some tested 19th-century cloth-bound books have covers containing lead, arsenic, chromium or mercury, according to an Ars Technica report published August 19, 2024. The findings concern specific collections and samples—not all Victorian books, and not every green cover. The practical concern is that some pigments can shed hazardous dust; color alone cannot confirm what a book contains.
What the reported findings do—and do not—show
The Poison Book Project reported that lead was present in the cloth of 50 percent of the 19th-century cloth-case bindings it had tested so far. Ars Technica also reported that arsenic, chromium and mercury had been detected. These are findings from the project’s examined sample, not an estimate of how many Victorian books overall contain hazardous materials.
A separate Lipscomb University survey examined 19th-century books in its Beaman Library. In that sample, the highest measured lead concentration was more than twice the CDC limit, and the highest chromium concentration was six times that limit, according to the report. It did not provide the absolute concentrations or the threshold values, so those comparisons cannot be converted here into a household risk estimate.
As Lipscomb chemistry undergraduate Abigail Hoermann put it, “These old books with toxic dyes may be in universities, public libraries, and private collections.” That possibility is a reason for cautious handling, not evidence that every old book is hazardous.

Why emerald green and chrome yellow raise different concerns
Emerald green: arsenical pigment that may shed dust
The Poison Book Project began in 2019 as an interdisciplinary collaboration involving university scientists and Winterthur Museum, Garden, and Library. Its initial focus was copper acetoarsenite, the arsenic-containing pigment known as emerald green, in Victorian-era books in Winterthur’s circulating and rare-books collections. The project later expanded its scope.
The report describes emerald-green pigment as friable: particles may break apart under low friction and create dust that can be hazardous, particularly if inhaled. This exposure behavior is why a suspected arsenical-green book deserves more caution than its appearance alone might suggest.

Chrome yellow: lead chromate in tested covers
Chrome yellow is lead chromate, a compound containing lead and chromium. The report says researchers found especially high levels in bindings containing this pigment, but that, at the time of publication in 2024, they considered the lead and chromium bound to the cloth. That description differs from the reported dust-shedding concern for emerald green; it should not be read as a guarantee of safety or as a current assessment.
How the books were examined
The Lipscomb team used three laboratory methods, each answering a different question:

- X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF): surveyed book covers for arsenic and other heavy metals.
- Plasma optical emission spectroscopy: measured concentrations in snipped samples.
- X-ray diffraction (XRD): identified pigment molecules. The report says XRD identified lead(II) chromate in some samples.
Researchers reported finding more lead than chromium in some samples and suggested that other lead-based pigments might be present. That was a working hypothesis, not a confirmed explanation. These laboratory methods are not a household screening procedure, and a cover’s color cannot identify its pigment reliably.
How to handle or store a book you suspect may contain a hazardous pigment
The Ars Technica report attributed the following precautions to the Poison Book Project in 2024. The project’s current official protocol was not verified, so treat these as reported guidance rather than a confirmation of present-day rules:

- Wear nitrile gloves when handling a suspected book.
- While handling it, do not eat or drink, bite your nails, or touch your face.
- Wash your hands thoroughly and wipe the surfaces used afterward.
- For books suspected of containing arsenical green, the report recommended isolation in storage and removal from circulation where possible.
- Professional conservators should work under a chemical fume hood, according to the report.
Gloves do not eliminate the risk of inhaling dust. If a book is valuable or its condition makes the pigment uncertain, do not rub or scrape the cover to investigate it; seek guidance from a qualified conservator or an appropriate institutional safety professional. The report describes laboratory analysis and professional controls, not a validated do-it-yourself test.
As a precaution while awaiting analysis, Lipscomb reportedly sealed untested colored 19th-century books; books identified as having dangerous dyes were sealed after being removed from public circulation. That is an account of the university’s reported practice, not a universal storage specification for private collections.

What remains uncertain
The reported results were published August 19, 2024, and concern selected collections and samples. The article does not establish how common hazardous pigments are across all Victorian books, provide absolute concentration values for the Lipscomb measurements, or verify the current handling protocols of the Poison Book Project. The findings support care around particular suspect covers—not a blanket conclusion that old books, or green books, are poisonous.
