Terrifier 3 opened at No. 1 at the domestic box office in October 2024, taking just under $19 million over its three-day weekend. For an independent horror release, that is a strong result. It is not, however, an all-time horror opening record, and the reporting available for this article does not establish one. The headline’s “frightening new heights” is best read as figurative: the opening was a commercial surprise for a low-budget horror sequel, not a verified benchmark that resets the genre’s history.
Which opening figure to use
Two different domestic totals circulate for the film’s first weekend, and they measure different periods. Box Office Mojo, as accessed in 2026, separates them, so keep the dates attached whenever you quote either one.

| Three-day opening weekend | October 11–13, 2024 | $18,928,113 | No. 1 for the weekend; Box Office Mojo lists the film in 2,514 theaters |
| Four-day holiday frame | October 11–14, 2024 | $21,522,715 | Adds the Indigenous Peoples’ Day Monday, October 14; this is not a three-day figure |
| Early Sunday estimate | October 11–13, 2024 | $18.3 million | Associated Press estimate reported on the Sunday; final domestic figures were scheduled for release the following Monday |
For most purposes, the three-day figure is the standard answer to “how much did it make opening weekend.” Use the four-day figure only when you say that it includes the holiday Monday.
Why the early estimate differs from the final total
The Associated Press reported an initial Sunday estimate of $18.3 million. Studio and tracking estimates on opening weekend are routinely revised once final domestic numbers come in, and the final three-day total published by Box Office Mojo is $18,928,113. Cite the Sunday figure only as an early estimate, and use the final total for any comparison.

Where the film ranked
Domestic chart position
Terrifier 3 finished first on the domestic chart for the October 11–13, 2024 weekend, which the Associated Press described as having “topped the weekend box office” and having “overperform[ed] expectations.” That is a statement about a single weekend’s chart order. It is not an all-time record, and it does not measure the film against horror releases from other years.
Genre ranking, dated to October 2024
TheWrap reported on October 14, 2024 that the opening ranked fourth among horror openings of 2024 up to that point. That was a contemporaneous comparison made before the year was over, so it should not be presented as the film’s current place in a full-year table. A No. 1 weekend rank and a genre ranking answer different questions, and the two should not be merged into a single claim.

Worldwide and total earnings
Lifetime totals depend on which releases are included. Box Office Mojo lists the original theatrical release separately from a later Christmas event release, and the two totals differ.
| Measure | Amount | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| Domestic | $53,981,071 | Original release |
| International | $35,188,698 | Original release |
| Worldwide | $89,169,769 | Original release; the like-for-like figure for comparing with other theatrical runs |
| Worldwide, all releases | $90,322,103 | Includes the later Christmas event release |
When comparing with another film’s lifetime gross, use the original-release worldwide total of $89,169,769 unless the other film’s figure also includes re-releases or event screenings.

Budget and marketing: what each figure is
Three cost-related numbers appear in coverage, and they come from different kinds of sources. None is an audited production account.
| Figure | Amount | Source | What it is |
|---|---|---|---|
| Production budget | $2,000,000 | The Numbers, accessed 2026 | A database listing, not a studio accounting disclosure |
| Out-of-pocket marketing | $500,000 | Chris McGurk, Cineverse CEO, to TheWrap, October 14, 2024 | A figure given in an interview |
| Out-of-pocket marketing | Below $1 million | Cineverse SEC-filed statement, 2024 | A company statement using a broader ceiling |
The gap between the interview figure and the filing is not a contradiction, since one is a specific estimate and the other is an upper bound. Box-office gross is also not distributor profit. Ticket revenue is shared with theaters, and none of these numbers shows the distributor’s net take or its total costs.

What the company said about the result
Cineverse’s own statements are the main source of the “David beat Goliath” framing, and they should be attributed as such.
McGurk’s comments to TheWrap
McGurk told TheWrap on October 14, 2024: “David beat Goliath.” He also said: “But to actually do over $18 million and to win the weekend amongst all those studio tentpoles is just really unbelievable.” Both remarks reflect the company’s perspective on an independent film competing against major-studio releases.

The company’s “blueprint” claim
In its SEC-filed statement, Cineverse said: “Beyond the significant financial upside, the tremendous success of Terrifier 3 has established a potential new blueprint in the industry for the theatrical release of independent films with a much more risk-advantaged economic profile than ever before.” This is the company’s interpretation of its own strategy, not an independent industry finding. Other distributors have not been shown to have adopted it.
Home release
Cineverse’s fiscal-year 2025 results report that the film was released on EST/VOD and physical media and reached No. 1 on home-entertainment charts. The Numbers lists the video release date as November 26, 2024. Retail stock, editions and regional availability change over time, so check current listings before buying a specific format or edition.
Quick Recap
How to compare Terrifier 3 with other openings
- Match weekend length. Compare a three-day figure with a three-day figure, and a four-day holiday frame only with another holiday frame, stating the difference.
- Match release scope. Use the original-release worldwide total of $89,169,769 for like-for-like comparisons.
- Date every genre ranking. The fourth-place horror opening of 2024 is a TheWrap comparison from October 14, 2024.
- Label every cost figure with its source. Production budget is a database listing; marketing figures are company statements.
- Keep chart position separate from genre position. No. 1 on one weekend and a ranking among horror openings are different claims.
