Terminator Zero’s trailer sets up a fight on two fronts: a decades-long war between humans and machines in 2022, and a race to stop Skynet before its rise in 1997. The eight-episode anime follows resistance fighter Eiko as she travels back to protect scientist Malcolm Lee and his potentially world-changing AI, Kokoro.
What story does the trailer set up?
The story connects two dates. In 2022, human survivors have been fighting an endless machine army for decades. In 1997, Skynet becomes self-aware and begins its war against humanity. The official premise gives the trailer’s apocalyptic violence its context: the conflict is already devastating the future, while the events that could shape its outcome are unfolding in the past.

Eiko, a resistance fighter from the future, is sent to 1997 to protect Malcolm Lee. He is developing Kokoro, an artificial intelligence intended to counter Skynet’s impending attack. A future assassin is also hunting Malcolm, putting his three children in danger as he faces difficult choices about his creation.
The trailer’s “bloody war to come” is therefore not just a promise of cyborg action. The central tension is whether Malcolm’s AI can change humanity’s prospects—and what his decisions will cost his family. As creator Mattson Tomlin put it in a Netflix Tudum interview, “You have stories about families.”

What do the main and red-band trailers show?
Netflix distinguishes the main trailer from a red-band trailer. The red-band version, which debuted at Anime NYC on August 24, 2024, emphasizes the Terminator’s brutality and is intended for mature audiences. Netflix identifies The Smashing Pumpkins as the music artist for the main trailer but does not name the song. The official descriptions establish the trailers’ tone and premise, not a detailed scene-by-scene account.
Who made Terminator Zero, and who voices the characters?
Terminator Zero is an anime in the Terminator universe, focused on new characters. Netflix lists Skydance and Japanese studio Production I.G as production partners. Mattson Tomlin created the series and served as executive producer, showrunner, and writer.
| Voice performer | Role |
|---|---|
| Timothy Olyphant | The Terminator |
| Rosario Dawson | Kokoro |
| André Holland | Malcolm Lee |
| Sonoya Mizuno | Eiko |
| Ann Dowd | The Prophet |
When did it premiere, and what is its current status?
The eight-episode series premiered on Netflix on August 29, 2024, a date that also matches the in-universe Judgment Day date noted in Netflix’s feature. Netflix lists the series on its platform; availability may vary by territory.
On February 13, 2026, GamesRadar+ reported that Tomlin confirmed Terminator Zero was canceled after one season. According to the outlet’s account of his comments, Netflix offered additional episodes to wrap up the story, but Tomlin declined because he felt the first season’s finale was a good stopping point. He also said he had hoped to tell the future-war story he planned for seasons two and three. This is a creator statement reported by GamesRadar+, not an official Netflix cancellation announcement in the cited Netflix materials.
