For a first watch, see all six theatrical Terminator films in release order: The Terminator, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, Terminator Salvation, Terminator Genisys, and Terminator: Dark Fate. That sequence preserves the films’ original release history and their reveals without pretending that all six share one uninterrupted continuity.
What order should I watch the Terminator movies in?
The six theatrical films were released from 1984 to 2019. For a first-time viewer, release order is the clearest way to watch the franchise and see how its stories and timelines develop. The list below follows their original theatrical release dates, not a single definitive in-universe chronology. (iTechGuides; GameTimeline.org)
- The Terminator (1984)
- Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991)
- Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003)
- Terminator Salvation (2009)
- Terminator Genisys (2015)
- Terminator: Dark Fate (2019)
Why release order is the best first-watch route
The first two films establish the central Sarah Connor story and give the later films their common starting point. Watching in release order lets you encounter the franchise as audiences did, including the shifts in direction and continuity that followed Terminator 2. It is a viewing recommendation, not a claim that each sequel continues the same timeline.
Do the Terminator movies share one continuity?
No. The first two films are the foundation, but later sequels branch in different directions. There is no authoritative chronological order that turns all six theatrical films into one clean, uninterrupted story. Use release order for the full run; choose a continuity-specific route if you want to follow one sequel path. (iTechGuides; JustWatch)

The early sequel route: Terminator 3 and Salvation
Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines and Terminator Salvation form the early post-T2 sequel route: The Terminator → Terminator 2 → Terminator 3 → Terminator Salvation. Watch these after the first two if you want to follow that continuation.
The Dark Fate route
Terminator: Dark Fate follows Terminator 2 on a separate sequel branch. Its shorter route is The Terminator → Terminator 2: Judgment Day → Terminator: Dark Fate. You do not need to watch Terminator 3, Salvation, or Genisys first.

- Action since 1984 by James Cameron with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton.
The Genisys branch
Terminator Genisys revisits the 1984 setup as an altered-timeline branch. Treat it as its own path rather than as a required bridge to Dark Fate.
Choose a route based on what you want to watch
| Your goal | Suggested sequence | What it follows |
|---|---|---|
| First watch or all theatrical films | The Terminator → T2 → T3 → Salvation → Genisys → Dark Fate | Release history and the franchise’s changing directions. |
| Early sequel continuation | The Terminator → T2 → T3 → Salvation | The early post-T2 sequel route. |
| Short route into Dark Fate | The Terminator → T2 → Dark Fate | The sequel branch that follows T2. |
| Alternate-timeline curiosity | Watch Genisys as its own branch after the core films | A changed version of the original setup. |

Where to find the films
Streaming, rental, and purchase catalogs vary by country and can change. JustWatch’s guide updated June 16, 2026 covers India specifically; its listings should not be treated as global availability. Check a country-specific service listing shortly before you plan to watch. (JustWatch; GameTimeline.org)
A six-film Blu-ray collection can make a marathon less dependent on changing streaming catalogs, but confirm the edition, region compatibility, format, and included titles before buying. (GameTimeline.org)
