Teri Yaad, an Urdu feature film, opened in Lahore on 7 August 1948, on Eid-ul-Fitr. It is identified as the first feature film released in Pakistan—not the first film of any kind. Pakistan Film Magazine’s timeline lists the documentary Kashmir Hamara Hay as having been released the previous month.
Why the “first feature film” distinction matters
The title’s original “67 years ago today” wording referred to 7 August 2015, when Karan Bali published his account of the film’s anniversary. The date is now historical: Teri Yaad was released on 7 August 1948. Calling it Pakistan’s first feature film release preserves the distinction between a feature and earlier film work, including the July 1948 documentary recorded by Pakistan Film Magazine.
Bali places the release in the disruption that followed Partition. Lahore had been a major filmmaking center, but, in his account, the owners of its two major studios—Shorey Studios and Pancholi Pictures—left for India, and the studios were damaged in the riots. He presents Teri Yaad as an unlikely early achievement in that difficult environment.
Release, credits, and exhibition
The film was made in Lahore in black and white. Pakistan Film Magazine credits Dewan Pictures, producers Dewan Sardari Lal and D.P. Singh, director Dawood Chand, writer Khadim Mohayuddin, and music director Inayat Ali Nath. The cast included Asha Posley and Nasir Khan.

What the film’s legacy does—and does not—establish
Teri Yaad is significant as the first feature film released in Pakistan and as an early marker of the country’s film industry. Bali judged its production values poor and its technical execution inept compared with Indian films then being released in Pakistan; that is his assessment in a historical account, not a documented consensus among critics.
Bali also describes the later industry, known as Lollywood, as reaching a peak of more than 100 films a year in the 1970s. That figure concerns the industry’s later output, not the scale of production in 1948. The available historical accounts do not establish whether a copy of Teri Yaad can be watched today.
