CBS pulled Sharyn Alfonsi’s “Inside CECOT” from the December 21, 2025, 60 Minutes broadcast shortly before airtime, saying it needed additional reporting and an on-the-record response from the Trump administration. The report then appeared online through Canada’s Global TV app. The dispute centered on competing views of what reporting was needed—not on an established finding about anyone’s private motive.
What was the “Inside CECOT” segment about?
Correspondent Sharyn Alfonsi’s nearly 14-minute report concerned Venezuelan deportees sent to El Salvador’s CECOT prison. It included interviews with deportees who had been released and described their treatment there; those accounts are testimony from interviewees, not independently established findings simply by virtue of being broadcast. The Guardian reported the segment’s approximate length and its online appearance.
Why did CBS pull the report?
CBS News editor-in-chief Bari Weiss said the report needed additional reporting and an on-the-record response from Trump administration officials. In contemporaneous accounts, that was the stated editorial rationale for removing it from the scheduled broadcast. The Washington Post reported on the decision and the competing accounts.
Alfonsi’s account was that the administration had declined an interview and directed CBS to El Salvador for questions about the prison. She objected to treating government participation as a prerequisite for airing the report. In a memo to colleagues, as quoted in contemporaneous reporting, she wrote: “If the administration’s refusal to participate becomes a valid reason to spike a story, we have effectively handed them a ‘kill switch’ for any reporting they find inconvenient.” PBS NewsHour reported Alfonsi’s position and the memo excerpt.

These accounts describe different standards for completeness and right of reply: CBS’s stated concern was the reporting and response it wanted before broadcast; Alfonsi’s was that an official refusal to participate should not prevent publication. The available reporting does not establish a private motive for the decision as fact.
How did the pulled segment get online?
On December 22, the version prepared for Canadian distribution became available through Global TV’s streaming app and subsequently spread online. Reuters reported that a CBS spokesperson said the episode had mistakenly streamed in Canada. The appearance online followed the December 21 U.S. broadcast from which the segment had been removed. Reuters’ account, republished by Investing.com, describes the Canadian stream and CBS’s explanation.

Yes. The Associated Press later reported that the segment aired about a month after it was initially held.
