It keeps Seth MacFarlane’s crude, reference-heavy comedy, but shifts toward more self-contained episodes and gives John’s family a larger share of the story. One season review found that change an improvement overall, even as it flagged recurring plots.
Is Ted season 2 worth watching?
If season 1’s mix of raunchy jokes and family sitcom dynamics worked for you, season 2 offers more of the same comic sensibility with a somewhat broader focus. The season review credited to Collider by Headtopics praised the crude humor and the way character lessons carry from one episode to the next. It also judged the season more episodic than the first, a shift that lets Susan, Matty and Blaire spend more time in the foreground alongside John and Ted.
That assessment is one reviewer’s judgment, not a consensus measure. The review gave the season 7/10: a positive verdict tempered by the sense that some story engines recur too often.
What changes from season 1?
More episodic stories
John is a high-school senior, and the season leans further into individual episode premises rather than relying as heavily on the season’s ongoing through-line. That structure gives the family more opportunities to take the lead and lets lessons from one story remain relevant in later episodes.

The Bennett family gets more room
The reviewer’s strongest case for the shift is that it makes Susan, Matty and Blaire feel less like supporting figures orbiting John and Ted. Alanna Ubach’s Susan is singled out as a particular strength. The added family attention also brings some warmth to a show whose signature comedy is deliberately crude.
The jokes stay explicit
The looser structure does not signal a gentler show. MacFarlane’s familiar combination of explicit humor and pop-culture references remains central. Whether the extra family focus improves the balance depends on how much of that raunchiness you enjoy in the first place.

What works—and what gets repetitive?
“Dungeons & Dealers” is the standout
The review names “Dungeons & Dealers” as the season’s most effective episode. Its Dungeons & Dragons premise, featuring Brennan Lee Mulligan, gives the comedy a focused setup and a change of pace from the recurring teen and relationship stories. If the episode leaves you curious about playing, a Dungeons & Dragons Starter Set is one way to try the game; it is not a companion product required to watch the series.
Some plotlines return to familiar ground
The same review’s main reservation is repetition. John’s hormones and attempts to get weed supply recurring material, while Susan and Matty repeatedly revisit the possibility of rekindling their relationship. Episodic storytelling can make those plots easy to dip into, but it does not prevent a viewer from noticing when the same comic beats come around again.
