It is not one continuous plot: each short has its own characters, genre and creative team, making the series a lively introduction to the young Fujimoto’s range—and to the ways different directors can reinterpret his work.
What is Tatsuki Fujimoto 17-26 about?
The anthology adapts eight standalone manga stories from Tatsuki Fujimoto Short Story Collection 17-21 and Tatsuki Fujimoto Short Story Collection 22-26, published in English-market naming as Tatsuki Fujimoto Before Chainsaw Man: 17-21 and Tatsuki Fujimoto Before Chainsaw Man: 22-26. The pieces were created across Fujimoto’s late teens and early twenties, so the collection is best approached as a set of experiments rather than a single origin story. Amazon Japan’s announcement identifies the two source collections and all eight adaptations.
The stories veer from science fiction and supernatural premises to adolescence, romance, family tension and artistic rivalry. Their shared thread is less a common plot than Fujimoto’s appetite for abrupt tonal shifts and emotionally intense situations.
The eight stories, without spoilers
- A Couple Clucking Chickens Were Still Kickin’ in the Schoolyard — On an Earth where humans are supposedly gone, alien student Yohei looks after two chickens at school. The birds are hiding something.
- Sasaki Stopped a Bullet — Student Sasaki attends spring-break remedial classes to spend time with his teacher. A gunshot interrupts the lesson, and the gunman is someone the teacher once rejected.
- Love is Blind — On the eve of graduation, student-council president Ibuki tries to confess to Yuri. The trip home keeps going wrong.
- Shikaku — Shikaku, an assassin, is asked by Yugel, a long-lived vampire, to end his life after centuries of boredom.
- Mermaid Rhapsody — Toshihide plays a piano left underwater and meets Shiju, a mermaid who has secretly been listening to him.
- Woke-Up-as-a-Girl Syndrome — Toshihide wakes up as a girl and faces bullying; his girlfriend Rie’s older brother, Akira, steps in to help.
- Nayuta of the Prophecy — Kenji’s sister Nayuta is feared as a prophesied devil child who will destroy the world. Then she causes a major incident.
- Sisters — Art student Mitsuko finds a nude portrait of herself displayed at school, painted by her younger sister Kyoko, and seeks a response to the humiliation.

Why the anthology feels so varied
Seven directors and six studios worked across the eight adaptations, including ZEXCS, Lapin Track, GRAPH77, 100studio, Studio Kafka and P.A.WORKS, according to Amazon Japan’s staff announcement. That range matters: the project is not a single director’s uniform treatment of Fujimoto’s early work, but a collection of separate interpretations.
In a November 2025 interview with Anime Trending, producer Ryo Oyama said the project was proposed through Fujimoto’s publisher and that the anthology took shape during planning for Look Back. He described streaming as a practical fit for stories of different lengths and for a simultaneous worldwide release; the team’s existing relationship with Prime Video after Look Back also informed the choice.

The directors’ comments offer a glimpse of the adaptation choices, not a scene-by-scene evaluation of the finished episodes. Nobuyuki Takeuchi said he added some elements while trying to preserve the original manga’s angle and expressions. Seishiro Nagaya said he insisted on hand-drawn animation for a transformation sequence. Those are their accounts of their own approaches, rather than independent technical assessments.
What Fujimoto thought of adapting his early work
In Amazon Japan’s September 8, 2025 announcement, Fujimoto said he felt uneasy about adapting work made during his student years and worried it might rely too heavily on someone else’s inspiration. He added that he had not yet watched the adaptations, but trusted the talented directors to make them into proper works. The statement captures the project’s central tension: these are formative stories, revisited by artists with their own sensibilities.
