TCL has started putting AI-focused entertainment into its own streaming ecosystem, but the documented film experiment began with five short films—not a confirmed flood of AI-made movies on every TCL television. The company announced its FILM MACHINE program on November 12, 2024, and said the shorts would be promoted on TCLtv+. Its later Google TV and Veo plans broaden the AI story, but they are separate from that film slate.
What TCL announced: five shorts, not a feature-film slate
TCL Studios announced FILM MACHINE as its first AI TV and film accelerator program on November 12, 2024. The initial slate comprised five short films. TCL scheduled a premiere at the TCL Chinese Theatre for November 19, 2024, followed by distribution on TCLtv+ beginning December 12, 2024. The company said the films would be prominently featured on the service. Those were announced dates and plans; the announcement does not establish a continuing release schedule or a larger catalog. TCL Studios’ FILM MACHINE announcement
“AI-generated film” can describe anything from generated shots, settings, or characters to AI-assisted storyboarding and conventional production with limited generative effects. TCL’s announcement establishes that the shorts came through an AI-focused development program, but it does not give a film-by-film account of which tools were used, how much footage was generated, or how much human writing, direction, animation, and postproduction each involved. It is more accurate to call them AI-focused shorts or films developed through TCL’s AI accelerator than to claim they were made entirely by AI.
Why a television company is making content
TCL’s interest is not just a filmmaking experiment. The company sells televisions, controls parts of the smart-TV viewing experience, and operates TCLtv+, a free, ad-supported streaming service. That combination gives it a way to promote programming on the same screen where viewers choose what to watch.

When TCLtv+ launched in North America in 2023, TCL said it offered more than 200 free ad-supported streaming television (FAST) channels and more than 1,500 on-demand films and television programs. At launch, TCL said no subscription, fee, or login was required. That launch description should not be taken as a guarantee about every later feature or third-party channel: some content surfaced through recommendation tools may require a separate subscription or payment. The commercial logic is straightforward, though TCL has not quantified the economics of FILM MACHINE. Original short-form programming could give a free service more content to promote, create room for exclusive titles, and support advertising opportunities. Ars Technica reported on the connection between the films and targeted advertising; that is useful business context, not proof that every viewer will receive a particular ad or that TCL has disclosed the program’s financial goals. What “seeing” AI content can mean on a TCL TV
Several different technologies are often grouped under the label “AI TV.” They affect different parts of the viewing experience:
- AI-focused TCL films: The five FILM MACHINE shorts were developed through TCL’s AI film accelerator and slated for TCLtv+ promotion.
- Recommendations: Google TV recommendations may use signals such as watchlists, viewing activity, selected services, searches, Assistant activity, likes and dislikes, trailers, and regional popularity. That is content discovery, not film production. TCL’s Google TV recommendation guidance
- Personal video creation: Google’s Veo feature can create video clips, including from prompts or by animating photos, on supported Google TV devices. This is a user-facing creation tool, separate from TCL Studios’ film slate. Google’s Gemini for TV availability and feature information
- Picture processing: TCL markets AI picture processing, including scene-by-scene image adjustments. Processing a conventional movie to improve its appearance does not make that movie AI-generated. TCL’s 2026 TV lineup announcement
Which TCL owners may encounter these features?
There is no verified claim that every TCL television will automatically show AI-made films. TCLtv+ availability depends on the device, platform, app support, and region. TCL’s 2023 launch announcement initially described availability in the United States and Canada on TCL televisions with Google TV, with Roku TV and Fire TV availability planned. Its 2024 FILM MACHINE announcement listed TCL Roku TV, Roku devices, TCL Google TV, TCL Fire TV, and the app store as ways to access TCLtv+. Those platform descriptions are tied to their respective announcements and do not establish identical availability everywhere or on every model.

Google’s Gemini for TV documentation lists TCL QM9K, QM7K, QM8K, QM6K, and X11K among eligible models. Google documents geographic, language, account-profile, and age restrictions; the feature is not a blanket capability of all TCL sets. Google TV’s generative-video tools therefore should not be assumed to be available just because a television carries the TCL name. Streaming and recommendation functions require an internet connection. TCLtv+ is ad-supported, and third-party services or channels may impose their own payment or subscription requirements. A compatible non-TCL streaming device may also provide access to TCLtv+ where supported, so owning a TCL television is not necessarily the only route to the service.

What has changed since FILM MACHINE
By 2026, TCL’s U.S. TV messaging had become more explicitly AI-focused, including AI picture processing and plans to bring Veo video creation to Google TV. That shows a wider push to put AI features into the entertainment experience, but it is not evidence that the original shorts have grown into a large, regularly updated library of AI films—or that AI movies have displaced conventional programming on TCLtv+.
The potential upside is more experimental short-form work, faster creation of niche or stylized content, and new tools for viewers. The concerns are equally practical: uneven storytelling or production quality, unclear disclosure of AI’s role, copyright and likeness questions, effects on creative labor, and more advertising or profiling in a platform tied to the hardware. The five-film announcement does not answer how the individual productions handled those issues or how well they performed.

What TCL has—and has not—shown
TCL has shown that it is willing to develop AI-focused entertainment and give it visibility through its own ad-supported streaming service. The clearest film initiative began with five shorts announced in 2024. TCL’s later AI television features extend the strategy into recommendations, picture processing, and user-created clips, but they are distinct products and functions.
What remains unestablished is a universal rollout, a large continuing slate, a claim that the films were wholly generated without human creative work, or evidence that AI-made titles will become the majority of TCLtv+ programming. The defensible reading of “a lot more” is a direction of travel, not a verified promise of a wave of AI feature films on every set.
