Swift began performing around 7:45–7:48 p.m., and ABC News reported that NFL star Travis Kelce was watching from a VIP box.
Why was Taylor Swift’s Sydney concert delayed?
Stormy weather and nearby lightning led venue staff to clear the floor shortly before 6 p.m., according to ABC News. The Guardian reported that fans were briefly evacuated from the floor and lower bowl. The available reports do not establish an exact evacuation duration.
The show had been scheduled to start from 6:20 p.m. The Sydney Olympic Park Authority listed gates opening at 4:30 p.m. and the event finishing at 11 p.m. for the Sydney dates, 23–26 February 2024. Those were event schedule times, not a promise that the performance would begin on time.
When did Swift take the stage?
Swift began her set around 7:45–7:48 p.m. ABC News gave the time as 7:48 p.m.; The Guardian reported approximately 7:45 p.m. The small difference may reflect rounding or reporting. She performed before a reported crowd of 81,000, according to both outlets.
Swift greeted the audience, “Sydney you are making me feel absolutely phenomenal right now!” Later, she called the weather interruption “a crime against Sydney which needs to be fixed” before bringing Sabrina Carpenter on stage.
What happened to Sabrina Carpenter’s opening set?
Carpenter did not perform her scheduled opening set because of the weather delay, The Guardian reported. She later joined Swift on stage for a mashup, making a brief appearance during the concert rather than opening it as planned.

The 23 February concert was the first of four Sydney dates at Accor Stadium. Before the event, Sydney Olympic Park Authority advised attendees to use public transport, warning of heavy traffic and large crowds. Its guidance anticipated 300,000 fans across all four nights; that was an expected total, not a final attendance count.

The NSW Government said it planned more than 1,200 extra public transport services across the four nights: more than 700 buses and 550 trains. These were planned additional services, not a final count of trips operated. The government also described using de-identified CCTV footage, weather data and social media to inform crowd-movement measures, saying the system had been assessed under its AI Assurance Framework. That technology was not identified as causing or directly managing the lightning evacuation.
For context on the scale of the event, NSW Transport Minister Jo Haylen said before the concerts: “Crowds of this magnitude can be unpredictable, and we want to do everything we can to make sure people are safe and comfortable while moving around.” The 2024 travel arrangements are historical guidance; attendees should rely on current venue and transport information for future events.
