Instagram created a temporary, account-specific Easter egg on Taylor Swift’s profile ahead of The Tortured Poets Department (TTPD), released on April 19, 2024. On a phone, pulling down on her profile beyond the normal refresh animation revealed a writing-hand emoji, the album title and a release countdown. Separate hashtag effects appeared on Threads. The Instagram countdown was a 2024 promotional activation, not a permanent feature that readers should expect to find in 2026.
What Instagram added to Taylor Swift’s profile
Contemporary reports described a hidden countdown embedded in Swift’s Instagram profile beginning around April 15, 2024, during the final days before TTPD’s April 19 release. The experience was reported as exclusive to her profile rather than a general Instagram control available to every account.
The activation turned an ordinary refresh gesture into a reveal. Instead of stopping when Instagram’s usual loading animation appeared, users could continue pulling down to uncover additional elements tied to the album.
BGR’s contemporaneous account and NME’s report documented the interaction during the rollout.

How the Instagram countdown worked
These are the steps reported for the mobile app during the 2024 campaign—not instructions for a feature currently expected to work.
- Open Instagram on a phone and visit Taylor Swift’s official profile.
- Pull down on the profile as if refreshing it.
- Continue pulling after the standard refresh animation instead of releasing immediately.
- A writing-hand emoji appears as the first visual cue.
- Pull farther to reveal The Tortured Poets Department.
- Release the gesture to display the countdown to the April 19 album release.
The extra pull distance was intentional behavior in the promotional experience, not a normal refresh setting that users could enable on their own accounts.

What appeared on-screen
The reveal progressed from the writing-hand emoji to the album title and then to a release timer. The countdown connected the familiar Instagram gesture to a fixed event: Swift’s 11th studio album arriving on April 19, 2024.
Reports also described the Instagram experience as pointing fans toward Threads for more TTPD conversation. That prompt did not mean a Threads account was required to view the Instagram countdown.

Instagram and Threads used different Easter eggs
Coverage often grouped the campaign under “Instagram and Threads Easter eggs,” which can make the effects sound as though they all happened inside Instagram. They did not.
| Platform | What users did | What appeared |
|---|---|---|
| Visited Swift’s profile and pulled down beyond the normal refresh animation | Writing-hand emoji, album title and a release countdown | |
| Threads | Posted with selected TTPD-related hashtags or liked qualifying posts | A shimmering or gold-style treatment for hashtag conversations and celebratory white hearts after likes |
Billboard-based reporting, Yahoo’s syndicated coverage and NME all describe the Threads portion as a separate part of the rollout.

Hashtags reported for the Threads effects
Reports listed these qualifying tags:
#TTPD#TheTorturedPoetsDepartment#TorturedPoets#TSTTPD#Swifties#TaylorSwift(some reports rendered the final tag differently)
The exact visual was variously described as shimmer, glitter, sparkles or gold. “Shimmering/gold-style effect” is the safest description because contemporaneous accounts did not use identical wording. A like on a qualifying post was reported to trigger white hearts on-screen.

The mechanics made a routine action discoverable: fans had to interact with Swift’s profile rather than simply read a conventional announcement. The countdown created anticipation for a precise release moment, while the Threads effects encouraged people to post and react around shared hashtags.

The cross-platform route is clear from the reports: Instagram supplied the hidden reveal and directed attention toward Threads, where conversation received additional visual treatment. That is an analysis of how the campaign worked, not evidence of a separately announced Instagram product launch or of any particular performance result.
Why you may not see it now
The available reporting documents the feature during the April 2024 rollout and does not establish that it remained active on August 18, 2026. Readers checking today should therefore treat it as historical.
- The campaign was tied to the April 19, 2024 release date and could simply have ended afterward.
- It was an account-level promotion, not a setting available on other profiles.
- The interaction was reported for Instagram’s mobile experience, not desktop web.
- Instagram may have changed its refresh animation, profile layout, app version requirements or regional behavior.
- A cached, redesigned or otherwise different profile interface may not reproduce the original presentation.
There is no evidence that the countdown played or unlocked the album; it was a visual promotional timer. Readers can still find the album’s official pages and archived screenshots or posts, but should not expect the original live interaction to return.
The lasting significance of the TTPD Easter egg
Swift’s rollout showed how a platform can make a small interface gesture feel like a fan discovery. Instagram’s profile-refresh reveal and Threads’ hashtag animations were related campaign elements, but they served different jobs: one delivered a countdown on Swift’s profile, while the other decorated the surrounding conversation.
